Questions about Milroe.

As a leader you can either deal with the issues now or good luck trying to fix them later. In today's world of win now or else, CKD is in quite a conundrum. If he rips off the band aid all hell may break loose and he won't be around to see it get fixed and if he doesn't do anything about it he will inevitably seal his own fate because entitlement and prima donna's don't win championships. The good news for him, he will be paid handsomely regardless of how he goes about it. We as fans will be stuck with the collateral damage. Do with that what you will...
“If necessity is the mother of invention, then desperation is most certainly the father..”

I’m an old guy and attended my first Alabama game in 1967. I remember the miserable years of 1969 and 1970 when we lost a total of 10 games those two seasons. Bryant was rumored to be contemplating retirement, heading to the pros or running for political office.

In the summer of 1971, after a spring practice that proved to him he had one the best RB’s in the country (Musso) and QB that could run the option but couldn’t make it as a pro style passer (Davis), Bryant picked up the phone and called Darryl Royal to discuss the wishbone offense.

Literally, in the middle of the summer, in 21 practices, Alabama installed the wishbone.

My point? Bryant later stated “I decided I was going to sink or swim, live or die with the wishbone. I couldn’t continue to do what we were doing and expect success”.

Sometimes, it order get where you want to be, you have to gamble on yourself. And this could be that moment for DeBoer. But will he take it? My gut says “no”.

Milroe showed improvement this year, and then he regressed right back to where he was at his worst.

The safety grounding penalty against SC was (at least for me) when his reversion was completely apparent.
I think CKD forgot to tell him, "Never go full Milroe"...

Buchner looked like he was on the level of Spencer Pennington bad.

How on earth did he ever make it on the roster at ND or Alabama.

From what I saw, he looked like a middling FCS QB.
Which leads me to believe Saban left it up to Rees to pick the starter for that game.

Yeah, that was one of many concerning plays for me the last 2 weeks. The missing of a wide open Ryan Williams vs Tennessee was the last straw for me in thinking we needed to seriously consider Ty.

The offensive skill players frustration reminds me of Hurts, unfortunately, and shows probably should be a change in quarterback or very close. Also means in this day and age they will leave like last year. But as I’ve said, we’re stuck with him for this year. He was a great leader in the off season and helped the staff during the transition. That bought him a ton of leash and as match as it frustrates everyone probably even the coaches he deserves that. With a decent d he did help win SEC and go to playoffs. But he has also stunk so unless we’re at practice who knows what’s going on.

Something that isn't talked about much but Milroe's demeanor is that of an empath and comes off lackadaisical much of the time. He is literally the anti-thesis of a Tom Brady'like QB. For some guys that may work but for him it seems to be more of a brush it off mentality. This in turn leads to him making the same mistake over and over. Because of this, he also doesn't hold the people around him to a higher standard because they know he isn't going to say anything to them. Dan Lanning talked about this week that his best teams are "player led". You can't be player led if the QB is sitting quietly on the sideline in his feelings after he just threw another interception.

That lackadaisical way that he runs drives me nuts as he has been sacked/stopped short of the LTG many times because the defender was faster than he anticipated. That is cockiness...and he needs to develop a sense of urgency or no NFL team is going to be interested in him.

DeBoer answered that question today in a press conference and says there's no injuries to him.
No injuries physically,,,I could say more but I have a healthy respect for the authority of the moderators on this board,

My biggest fear is that if we don't give him a shot we'll see him somewhere else next year just tearing it up.

I'd be happy for him but ticked off that we mishandled it.

Holstein has been playing well for Pitt this year already and I won't be shocked if Sayin becomes a great QB for tOSU.
Holstein is having a very, very good year and he's a red-shirt freshman. He would have flourished in CKD's system. His ceiling in it would have been higher than Milroe's. The kid can play QB and definitely spin the ball.

The point is if he waits, it might unrecoverable.

If he addresses it now, both publicly and in the locker room, there's zero chance he's fired assuming he can get the culture fixed in one off season.

By the way, concerning the alleged “Mutiny in Tampa” last year, I’ve seen it alluded to that “Simpson couldn’t beat out Buckner for the start against USF when Milroe was benched”.

This could be true, but take this into consideration- who was Alabama’s OC? Where had Buckner played and who had he played for? After a miserable spring in terms of QB play, why was Buckner brought in from Notre Dame?

IMO Buckner got the start over Simpson in that game primarily because Rees was more comfortable with him than Simpson, not because he was simply “better”.

And anyone under the illusion that Simpson will see the field outside an injury to Milroe or a complete blowout, today’s press conference pretty much cemented that ain’t happening.
Buchner was basically the Plan B after a truly horrific spring by both Milroe and Simpson. Now starting him over Simpson is another debate.

I like Milroe, as I think we all do, and want to see him be successful. But the performance Saturday was atrocious, for whatever reason. His accuracy has never been great, but receivers have often bailed him out to make his numbers appear better. He's not a QB that needs to be throwing it 45 times a game. He does not fit this system. I understand CKD giving him the opportunity as the returning starter, but it should be obvious by now. Tommy Rees adjusted the playcalling to suit Jalen's skillset, but Sheridan and CKD don't seem to be willing to do it. Square peg, round hole. It's time to insert a QB more suited for this system. Williams is a great player, but doesn't need to be seeing 20 targets in a game, especially with other receivers running wide open. I understand their frustration.
We’ve been running basically the exact same offense as last year. Maybe some more swing passes and intermediate routes. But it is almost the same. Literally the entire offense is Milroe Milroe Milroe.

I heard a caller on WJOX bring up something I mentioned in the post game thread. Why is Milroe staying in the pocket when the LB’s and DB’s have dropped deep in coverage and he could easily pick up yards/first downs running?

A poster here replied “maybe coaches have told him to sit the pocket to give routes time to develop”. The caller to WJOX said “or is he choosing NOT to run because he wants NFL types to see him more of pro style pocket passer?”

Something I didn’t consider. At this point, as bad as Saturday’s play was, who knows what is going on in his head?

This response is totally hypothetical because it will never happen but...

What if CKD came out and said, "this is the situation and this is what I'm doing to fix it." Then he cleaned house and we went 3-9 the following year. Would the fans support him or call for his head?
I’d give him another year after a total house cleaning. If you really have to run off half the team for cancer reasons, that buys you time, imo.

I also see this as a “marry one, kill one, sleep with one” kind of a false dilemma. It would be really hard to go 3-9, even with a house cleaning. That would indicate a total loss of the team mentally. Even the worst programs in this conference don’t go 3-9 anymore.

Yeah, I think it is telling seeing how much we absolutely roasted Tommy Rees. Yet as this season has played on we have morphed into running a very similar offense as he had to do with Milroe. Seems like there's a common denominator in those situations isn't it? We probably owe Rees an apology.
