Might hit triple digits next week here in Atlanta. I will be further north but it will be pretty hot there too. Doing a few north Georgia hikes.

my afternoon commutes have been pretty special these last few weeks. glad to see next week will be even better /s

I have started carrying an extra shirt on my hikes/rucks/bikes because of the amount of sweat. Even the dryfit shirts get overwhelmed

dryfit, wicking, waterproof breathable, etc are laughable concepts during the summer in the south

we were in asheville last weekend and even at elevation is was as hot as atlanta. the pop up showers would cool things off briefly, and then it would turn into a sauna. everything is super lush this year so you should have some nice hikes

They seem to keep me cooler on hot weather runs. By the end, the shirt is soaking wet.

Added benefit is the 50 SPF rating. I have a couple more long sleeves in case I'm running in the daytime. I've had the trifecta of skin cancers so I no longer run without a shirt.

With my nearly 86 year database, I know climate shift is real. Plant and animal successions prove it, if nothing else. That said, there's a lot of sensationalism going on in TV weather. HSV is right on the average for this date - 92F, with normal humidity. Yet all one hears on TV weather is "heat index," repeated over and over. Even the NWS gets in on the act. The fact of the matter is that there's not much else to report on, usually, in July and August in the South, except it's damned hot. So, they beat it to death...

It can be useful, even life-saving in extreme situations. One winter in State College we had 3-4 days where the temp was -30 and the wind chill was -70.

Radio stations were warning people that if they went outside, any exposed skin would be frostbitten in 30 seconds. Me, I just made a big-ass pot of chili.

Similarly, the heat index lets me know if I really want to mow the yard.

But did you really need that warning? I've seen -40F, which I discovered from looking at the crawler on the bottom of the TV in the CO ski resort is the same as -40C. When I commented, one of my fellow housemates told me I could have seen -47F, if I'd gotten up a little earlier. We made a pact not to ski unless it reached -15. We had to wear ski masks to cross the road to go eat. I have two frost-damaged fingers and both big toes from that trip. I have a big toenail that grows sideways...

Just got home from working on my motorcycles at my storage units. It will be different when we get into our cool season but for now I'm waiting until 7pm to do anything over there that requires labor.

Aside from the less oppressive heat and sun beating on me, there's hardly anyone there so it's quite peaceful.

I still work up a sweat.

And of course on one of my units that has two opposing doors, the freaking lock wouldn't work on one end. So I didn't have any cross ventilation. And the bike I was working on of course was on the end with the door shut. However I brought my trusty Ryobi cordless fan and had air blowing on me the whole time. Plus the work I did came off without a hitch so I'm a happy camper.

I mainly watch the dew point. If its 70 or above its nasty outside. Weatherground.com gives you a good graphical presentation of the 10 day forcast including the dew point.

So here I am in Chicago and.....
- we were getting baked this week
- both yesterday and the day before, skied opened up about time for me to leave work
- you've probably seen some of the flooding over at the South Side
- the "easy flooding" here kinda reminds me of how easily it flooded me in San Antonio
- I wanted to run down to Rate Field (the "new" Comiskey) to see the White Sox host the Cubs, but we're listed with a 95% chance of rain in an area that flooded just yesterday so.....I'll stay home!

I know everyone thinks "their" weather is weird, but having lived in Europe, New England, Texas, and the Deep South (and a year 126 miles south of here a long time ago).....NONE of them in my experience has ANYTHING on the weird weather here.

We had a three-day span in April where one day the whipping winds made it 36 degree chill, the next it was 90 degree index (Lord, it was HOT here because they're just not as big with the AC), and the next day we had the equivalent of a dust storm fill the skies.

Weird, man, weird.

My cycling friends and I are pushing our rides earlier and later to cope. We climbed the hill today in front of Embassy Suites in Homewood - cyclists refer to it as Embassy Sweats. It about finished me. It averages to be a 5% incline with a short pitch that is 10% plus.

Did *I* need it? I'm from the South--I tap out at -20. But you know how little sense damn yankees have--plus, a LOT of people in State College take the bus, and most of the bus stops don't have anything to shield you from the wind.
