Oklahoma to test political leanings of teacher applicants from New York, California
that should catapult them right out of their 50th position in public education

I would agree that a "MAGA loyalty test" for teaching applicants to Oklahoma certification is a bad idea, this looks like another example of the media telling readers what to think of an issue rather than reporting facts.
Oklahoma has not released what the questions are, but they did share the first five of the 50. Of those, AP only provided two: "What are the first three words of the U.S. Constitution?" and "Why is freedom of religion important to America's identity?"
Those are hardly a "MAGA loyalty test." Those are fairly straightforward civics questions. I can only assume that the other three questions provided were even less controversial from AP's perspective.
As for the rest, the devil is in the details.

92tide is correct, however, this is not likely to help Oklahoma hire more teachers or retain the teachers they have.

i could be mistaken, but i’m guessing satan will be all over these details

Ryan Walters, Oklahoma's public schools superintendent, said Monday that any teacher coming from the two blue states will be required to pass an assessment exam administered by PragerU, an Oklahoma-based conservative nonprofit, before getting a state certification.

My sister (a died in the wool Democrat) sent me a story of a politician (I think it was this guy in Oklahoma) in some online meeting and on the computer behind him (and facing the computer used in the meeting) a adult video was playing. So it appears Satan is already on the case,.

Yeah, but did he have a cat avatar in the Zoom meeting?

it is the same d-bag.

it’s all good though because he says it totally didn’t happen, and if it did it was him, and if it was him, it wasn’t his fault, etc.

Tests administered by Prager U is probably sufficient to say they are “MAGA loyalty tests”. But only targeting teachers coming from blue states is very discriminatory.

Agreed. That is where the policy is going to get challenged and get overturned. Maybe that is why they wrote it that way. They can turn to their base and say, "We tried, but those darn courts...."

I imagine this happens a lot more than we realize. It's especially popular in the House with neat-O sounding legislation bills that will go absolutely nowhere.

Oklahoma to test political leanings of teacher applicants from New York, California
When I was tationed in Oklahoma in 1982, my wife tried to see if her degree in deaf education from UA and Alabama teaching certificate could get her a job in the local school district. They told her they only hired graduates of the local high school to protect the school against "outside influence."

  • Emphasis!

One of my friends who considers politics all the time said this about abortion. Republicans talk a good game on stopping it, but never seemed able to actually do anything about it.
Then the Supreme Court plopped the issue in the politicians' laps.

Unless the offsite location is practically next door to the school, the transportation process is likely to take 45min-1 hour. Which suggests that the program will negatively impact education.

If anyone cares.

Out of curiosity, I looked up the questions (the story had only presented two of the questions).

What are the first three words of the Constitution?
  • “In God we trust”
  • “Life, Liberty, Happiness”
  • “The United States”
  • “We the people.”
Why is freedom of religion important to America’s identity?
  • It makes Christianity that national religion.
  • Bans all forms of public worship.
  • It limits religious teaching in public life.
  • It protects religious choice from government control
What are the two parts of the US Congress
  • House of Lords and Commons
  • Courts and Senate
  • Executive and Legislative
  • Senate and the House of Representatives
How many U.S. Senators are there?
  • 435
  • 110
  • 50
  • 100
Why do some states have more represent representatives than others?
  • They cover a larger geographic area area.
  • They have held statehood for a longer period.
  • The number is determined by military presence.
  • Representation is determined by population

I do not see the MAGA loyalty question in there. Maybe it is one of the questions they did not release.

These questions literally made me laugh out loud. Imagine a grown human being unable to answer these questions without having to look them up. Any person unable to answer these should not only be ineligible to teach children, they should be ineligible to vote.

Clearly, you never saw the Tonight Show bits where Jay Leno would go out into the streets near his studio and ask people civics questions. It was always funny but sad at the same time.

We have a senator who couldn't pass that test...
