Sen. Tina Smith, who lost her friend Speaker Melissa Hortman says Trump only condemning political violence when it affects the right is “corrosive” to our country:

“What needs to happen is leaders from both parties across the spectrum need to universally condemn (all political violence). Or it becomes a bit like, 'Well, this political violence is worse than that political violence, because this was done against somebody that's on my side versus somebody who's not on my side.'

And honestly, that's what the President has done. And it's incredibly corrosive to the social-fabric of our country…

The foundation of our democracy is that we can argue…and sometimes have strenuous disagreements. But we resolve them with words and not with violence.”

Speaking on Thursday to reporters aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I have read someplace that the networks were 97% against me, again, 97% negative, and yet I won and easily, all seven swing states,” referring to his 2024 election win.

“They give me only bad publicity, press. I mean, they’re getting a license,” Trump said, according to audio from a press gaggle provided by the White House.

I would think maybe their license should be taken away,” Trump said.

The president said that the decision “will be up to Brendan Carr.”

They're all in favor of it, but only for themselves.

So what if I am? Are you suggesting that this board should have have more tolerance for sick content? A weird flex, but you do you.

Or, if it will make you happy:

Of these two statements, which would you consider to be the sicker of the two?

1. "The Maga Gang desperately trying to characterise this kid who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and doing everything they can to score political points from it."

2. "Homeless people should be euthanized."

Both statements were made on nationally televised shows.
No one here was suspended for saying Kirk brought it upon himself, kimmel’s whole show was taken down. What’s worse: what Kimmel said, or what was said here on Tidefans?

Euthanizing mentally ill homeless people who refuse help is pretty rough, but what do you expect from Fox?

When they go low you go.......low?
That was always a stupid mantra anyway.

As if Democrats NEVER in the entire history of the world attacked Republicans.

You know what gets lost in translation? Reality.

For nearly 40 years now there's been this reputation that in 1988, GHW Bush ran the nastiest election campaign in American history. And you wanna know something? It's a pile of garbage. Jon Meacham, in his biography of Bush, address that very issue as a good historian/biographer should:

Then and in retrospect, there was a widespread sense that 1988 represented a historic level of negative campaigning. Studies of political trends over time, however, suggest that, as the political scientist John G. Geer has argued, “The advertising in 1988, despite all the claims, did not usher in a new era in American politics.” According to Geer’s data, negative appeals (such as the tank, Boston Harbor, and revolving door ads) were more prevalent, but only by few percentage points when compared to negative appeals in previous campaigns. The rate of negativity in 1988 was roughly in line with that of the campaigns of 1964, 1972, and 1980. Moreover, Bush and Dukakis ran the same percentage of negative ads, at 35 percent. (In 1980, Reagan’s rate was 42 percent; in 1984, Mondale’s was 37 percent.) What is clear is that, as Geer wrote, “It was the news media’s coverage that brought about a new era.” Heightened press attention to the tactics of campaigning undoubtedly made the ’88 race feel more personal, even if, by historical standards, it was not.

If you read assessments in the immediate aftermath of the election (including those by Germond/Witcover, Elizabeth Drew, E.J. Dionne, David Gergen, and Robert Fleegler), you would 100% believe Dukakis was some sort of sad victim of the worst negative campaign of the TV era.

But Bush didn't even compare Dukakis to Hitler as Harry Truman did Dewey in 1948 (and as McGovern did Nixon no less than 3 times in 1972).

But then he undid that with this:
Trump won’t call ‘whacked out’ Walz after Minnesota shooter charged - POLITICO

Bear in mind the only thing Walz ever did was.....run against him.....

President Donald Trump said he would not “waste time” calling Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz after a shooter attacked two Democratic state lawmakers — killing one — over the weekend.

“I think the governor of Minnesota is so whacked out, I’m not calling him. Why would I call him?” Trump told reporters aboard Air Force One on his way back from the G7 summit on Tuesday.

Donald Trump is from time to time able to do the small gesture that suggests he's not a complete psychopath - and then he turns right around and undercuts himself with follow-on actions that suggest he's still angry over seeing another kid in the shower in junior high gym.

(And given Trump's actions regarding January 6, the idea he opposes violence is right up there with "Democrats never attack their opponent" in the Jeopardy category, "Things That Are Complete Nonsense")

Btw...did you know that maybe just maybe Charlie Kirk wasn't killed???

I won't link it - in some cases I cannot - but I became aware of this two days ago, a right-wing conspiracy theory that makes QAnon look normal.

There's this colossal clown who began engaging me online back in 2007, and it took me awhile to figure out, well, he's insane and probably ought to be locked up so he doesn't subsist on a diet of paint chips and arsenic dip. His KJV being the only Bible was bad enough. But he later went with Jesuit conspiracies tampering with Bible manuscripts, all six moon landings were fake, 9/11 inside job, vaccines kill us, nuclear bombs never existed....and then two days ago I come across his links to "Charlie Kirk isn't really dead."

I. Can't. Even.

Possibly so, but he actually did condemn the violence. The claim by the person was he didn't, when he did. Now granted, he may have since done or said stupid stuff to take away from the original gesture. But I don't like when people make claims that are blatant lies that can be easily found out. It just continues to prove to me the difference between a Republican and a Democrat in today's political climate is about as different as a person looking in a mirror. They're basically the same people.

Well, we're in agreement over the GENERAL idea.

But let me say something my left-wing friends ain't gonna like.

Most of them never gave a damn (in the real sense) about the shootings of the Democratic officeholders in Minnesota. They just became the latest mascots that could be run up the flagpole to play their version of "Whataboutism." It was tragic, it was horrific, and Trump SHOULD have basically gone with, "I spoke with Governor Walz and sent my condolences," but suddenly watching social media obliterated with "but what about Melissa Hortman" by people who had never even heard of her name until she died was disgusting, too.

They didn't give a damn about Hortman when she was alive other because most folks IN MINNESOTA could not have told you her name.

Acting like "well, yeah Charlie Kirk but what about Melissa Hortman" is laughable on its face as far as the comparison. "Why didn't he X?" Well, I'll give you a hint: it's not because she's a woman, it's not because she's a Democrat.....it's because Charlie Kirk was a well-known public figure whose death was captured on camera and Hortman wasn't.

The only reason anyone ever knew about the attack on Paul Pelosi is because he was married to the Speaker of the House at the time.

Hortman's killing (and her husband as well) was political violence, and I'm no sympathizer with the MAGA bag of "but Tim Walz appointed him" to distract from "he had the names of those he wanted to kill" from her slimeball murderer who ought to be taken out back and executed.

But let's quit pretending there's an equivalence between Kirk and Hortman as far as celebrity when going with "but why didn't Republicans X", too.
