Bruce Pearl to retire

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

I assume this means the transfer portal window opens up for Auburn players for the next 30 days?
Oh I hadn’t thought about that. With the season about to start, it’s likely someone in house takes over. No way they can hire someone. The deal was probably to get his son the gig.

This is the direction----don't think it was announced but has been stated already.

So here’s a thought a buddy of mine had about the transfer portal opening. If it does, where could they go? Too deep into the semester to transfer anywhere. He may have known he was bailing out but waited till the players were trapped and could move out when he stepped away. If so, genius move frankly.

It was pretty well known around the basketball program that his son was earmarked to take over when Bruce retired. I don’t think many thought it would be this soon though.

So it looks like the 30 day portal window does open for the players tomorrow. However, they can't play for that new team this year since they are already enrolled in school, they would have to redshirt. Pearl had this planned for a while.

Also almost certainly cementing his son as his replacement...

THAT is explanation for the timing.

Too late to transfer and play anywhere else... 😎
I don't know the rule, but am guessing that whether they can transfer and play soon depends on whether it's defined by season (in which case, the transfers couldn't play), or by academic term. If the academic term, they might not be able to play until the spring semester, but that's still the majority of the games.

Anybody out there know the rule?

Whatever the rule is I’m sure it is orthogonal to common sense.

I read that only grad students could play in the spring. Undergrad can't play for the year and would have to redshirt.

Does anybody know of an instance where a clear nepo hire worked out?

I can name two disasters — Murry Bartow taking over for his dad Gene at UAB, and Joey Meyer taking over for his dad Ray decades ago at DePaul.

But I can’t think of any successes.
