Sometimes he was and sometimes he wasn't. From what I saw, he was in on special teams less than he was out. He was used sparingly so that we could get as much out of him as possible.
Have you ever been on a special teams play such as a punt or kickoff? If a player is "injured" to the point where he is sitting out of his main position because of his "injury" then he AIN'T playing special teams..LOL!!!... trust me.

Jimmy Johns gains more yards on 3 carries than Darby does the entire game. Johns has shown a better ability to get yardage than Darby for most of the year yet Johns sits on the sidelines the entire second half of the UT game while Darby continues to get stuffed like grandma's Thanksgiving Turkey.
How many more times this week you gonna use that line BB? ;)

Well, I was wrong. You obviously do have all of the answers from where you are.

By the way, how many games this year have you seen where Jimmy Johns has not only not gotten at least one tackle on ST, but not even come close to one?

Nah, don't have all the answers just know enough and played enough football to KNOW that if the guy is too injured to play his regular position he's not a special teams participant. Unless the coach has something against him. :biggrin2:

I love the reference of "from where you are" as if anyone outside of the people playing the game and the coaches do not have the ability to see obvious problems on the field and if they suggest they do then they're wrong. I love it.:biggrin2:

And I love the way you avoid the points and questions to suit your agenda. I will now return to having intelligent duscussions with those who wish to do so.

I know you're not going to believe me Bayou but right after I hit submit to respond to Bamarich I swear to you I had the thought run through my mind that "I guarantee you Bayou is going to tell me to stop saying that.". :biggrin2:

......I'll bring that to an end immediately. :biggrin2: ;)

If you don't I can. I don't like to publicly reprimand members but I am making an exception. You are getting a bit too close to the lines and seem to be daring us. I can be your huckleberry Johnny Ringo.

Keep sparring with members, moderators and admin. Get too close to my button and I will ring the bell. Keep posting your mantra over and over. Keep making posts that are begging for flames. You have 66 infraction points, make a smart reply to this and I will type in the last 34 tonight.

Oh well. This thread got "jacked" away from my original post. In my opinion Cecil is the cream of the crop. I find his articles much more insightful and objective than any of the syndicated sports "experts". However, I've also been told that when he takes his journalism hat off he bleeds Crimson. When I heard the reference to him "playing" I thought that he really must bleed Crimson.

Cecil at least does his homework and is very knowledgable about Alabama sports and those associated with it. Cecil doesn't make things up as he goes. JessN is cut from similar cloth. Jess does his homework and even though his opinion isn't always accepted he is accurate and isn't making things up or using old aricles to spit out a page count.

One thing I don't understand is some of the criticism that is being thrown at the direction of Cecil Hurt, and also to Jess on this and other boards! Should they "bury their heads in the sand", ala "Baghdad Bob", (or whatever his name was)? Should UA attempt to control the state media so that only rosy reports are given regardless of the situation or circumstances? Cecil and Jess seem to love the University, and support the program as much as anyone! In addition to bringing up some facts that certain things may need to be re-evaluated, they have also written many articles supportive of the state of the program and CMS! I've just seem some negative criticism heaped upon both of them, and to lump them in with the likes of Finebaum is nonsense! Realistic assessments are what make organizations better over time. "Pumping sunshine", and "doom-and-gloom" will make no one better! I'm thankful that there are some out there who cover Alabama athletics that can look at our program objectively, and will report on the state of the program without an agenda getting in the way of facts!
No they should not bury their heads - but if you live by criticism (like they both seem to) then you can expect to get it. Maybe they both really love the Tide - but Mama always said a person words usually spoke how they feel. Personally I do not know either man at all. I have never read a Hurt articule that was not posted here. As far as Jess is concerned, he promotes this board as a Bama friendly board, and him and the mods usually don't allow much Bama bashing - but lately thats all I have read from him. And as far as Finebaum is concerned - if you run with the dogs -you'll usually get their fleas.
I have been a member here a while under the name Crimsongator and a couple of years before that under flbamaboy, and I have seriously considered dropping out (probably will be dropped now for sure) - anyway just my 2 cents worth. I have been a fan of Bama's for all of my 56 years - I don't care how good/bad or otherwise the teams is - THEY are MY team - and yes I bleed CRIMSON ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

While I like and respect both of them , they aren't above making mistakes or just being flat out wrong . I'm not suggesting that either are in this instance(RE: Coaches and strategy) but , one of them does seem to treat their readers as if they are quite mindless on occasion . Sometimes you can get too close to the "program" . I know , because I've been there . However , believe me when I say this , neither will ever be confused with the "all-knowing" Forrest Davis . :eek2:  That guy was nothing more than a puppet . Is FD still alive ??? I hope he is but , I sure do not miss him .

The Cecil Hurt playing fullback in '57 was writer Cecil's father. I've scanned a pic of him from my Corolla for that year for Cecil. I'll see if I can dig it up and post it...
Thanks for clarifying that. I guess I always thought he was older because he sounds like he has common sense....And nobody's "public life" pictures ever look like they really look, you know. But I may have to stop cutting Cecil my usual slack, since he's not a former player.

Sorry for running counter to popular opinion, but I'm one who thinks that having Alabama play it close for most of the game against really good teams and then lose is WAY BETTER than I expected of them this year. And I'm one who thinks that the coaching has a lot to do with what looks to me like overachieving.

I think some people have a problem with timing of the criticizm. Its in the middle of the season, and a lot of people are already talking a coaching change. Having people that are normally supportive like Jess and Cecil Hurt start basically second guressing our coach is giving the extreme people that are screaming for Shula to gone a lot of extra ammo. The people I know that are critical of Jess and Cecil feel that it is bad for us right before the recruiting season gets hot and heavy.
Sportswriters are paid for their opinions, not to just regurgitate stats. They can't have any credibility if they're just lap-dogs, only focusing on the positives and ignoring the negatives.

Could it be that some folks don't like to read some of the articles by Cecil Hurt and Jess Nicholas because they hit too close to the truth? When I read their articles that discuss a deficiency in the Alabama football program, I don't like the message but, without looking through my crimson colored glasses, I have to admit to myself that they're usually right on the money. I think that's what causes some to start bad-mouthing them - it forces them to justify to themselves why the articles are wrong.

I'm 100% Bama fan, through and through. I'd much rather read articles that talk about how great a shape the program is in, how Bama dominates opponents and strikes fear in their hearts and makes opposing fans dread when their team plays Bama. I don't get paid to write analyses about football in the SEC so I can put on a happy face :) and be a fan because my livelihood doesn't depend on my credibility when I write about Bama football.

The truth is, there are some areas of concern with the program. I feel confident that they have been identified and are being addressed and rectified but sports journalists are paid to write about such things. I'll continue to read Cecil's and Jess' columns because I respect their work.
