Yeah, this system is rife with flaws.

The first flaw is that the Athletes report their NIL earnings...riiiiggght! 🙄

Me thinks Deloitte will be just another corrupt organization and will probably turn out to be more of a dealer.
They get checks and 1099's; these aren't $100 handshakes, anymore. ? This is real money and they are now in the real world of paying taxes. As they should.

Not saying this won’t happen, but if it does they will lose their accounting accreditation and would be out of business like Arthur Andersen after Enron. Not sure they would risk that for college football.

From JessN’s latest update:

Take: The Hollywood Smothers thing kind of sticks in my craw because the story floating around is that we may have tried to get him to sign for a lower number after agreeing to a higher number. As I put it earlier today, that's the kind of thing that has made me walk out of a car dealership before. That may be how the sausage is made these days but I don't like doing that kind of thing.
Definitely not a good look, if true

The lack of enforcement regarding NIL stipulations is mind-blowing. My concern is that the people in charge don't even know where to begin to get things back under control, so they've just decided to whistle part the graveyard.

Someone mentioned it a while back, but I remember telling my wife when Auburn lawyered up during the Cam Newton scandal and the NCAA cowered, that AU just laid the blueprint for everyone going forward and pulled the curtain back on the "wizard."

To be honest, it would have been the smart play (not the honest and right one, but the smart one) if Alabama would have done the same when napkins were being signed or unused textbooks were being given out.

"Floating around"?

That's not exactly solid information...

Very interesting that we keep going after RB's when by all accounts we have a solid RB room already. I guess they are looking at talent and potential injuries and feel like we need the depth. I will start to feel a lot better when more OL and DL come aboard and we make a decision about the OL coach. Once those three things start happening, I will feel A LOT BETTER about where we are headed.

I doubt the $100 handshakes have disappeared.

The Clearinghouse doesn't have the power of the IRS.

I seriously doubt that what most players report to both entities would be the same... 🙄

If they had gotten Smothers and Peake, there would be a completely different feel to this portal class.
I agree on that and obviously the running game has been an area of concern with me for some time. It's hard to say what's going on right now, because until we hear some official explanations and see the final totals we can't really reverse engineer what they had available resource wise or what their priorities really were.

But, in this case the narrative is that they low-balled Smothers (not saying they did, I'm not the one that put that out there) while hosting probably the most expensive receiver in the portal. That comes off like the running game isn't a high priority.

Could they have just suddenly run out of money and kept the visits going to save face? Who knows? Things just seem to messy right now. If they had made those moves and seemingly addressed the running game/OL issues, I think most of us certainly would feel very different.

Having said that, the class is still just too small. They're signing about as many as Georgia, but Georgia had 8 less guys leave via the portal. So every-time I look at the numbers it looks like Alabama is short about 10 portal additions relative to where they should be. It makes me very uneasy.

Yeah, if we don’t get a change of OL coach, we’re going to be even worse on the line than we were this year because the personnel quality has taken a step back, unless we make a serious move in the portal soon. The same coach with less talent doesn’t seem like a very good place to be.

I was never convinced that the problem was with the players. We had, by all accounts, a first round NFL left tackle. The center has declared for the draft despite having eligibility remaining, so he must have reason to believe he is good enough for the NFL. In any case we took him over a starter on a solid OL for a NC contender. We weren’t using Roberts, who was one of our best blockers. And I’m not convinced that Formby’s issues weren’t just lack of development. We’ll find out soon, I guess.

Point is that we had some quality players, taken individually. An OL is supposed to be better than the sum of its parts. But we had just the opposite.

Just to explain to the people with a more positive outlook why some of us are nervous and what the issues are. Alabama went into the portal with an apparent desire to upgrade positions and to address needs. In fact a lot of the portal departures appeared to be at Alabama's urging. Heck, Roq just signed with Western Kentucky. So a lot of those moves were Alabama just didn't like what they had. I'm alright with that.

You have to have a plan though. So where do we stand at this moment on key areas that Alabama themselves seemed to have targeted? Mind you I'm just going by portal additions and subtractions.

Offensive line: Worse
Running back: Worse
Receiver: Worse
Defense: Worse
Special teams: Upgrade (punter)

You can go hey, Alabama didn't really want to keep Horton, Formby, Keeley, Young etc... Alright, but where are their replacements? Then you go, well Alabama also didn't want to pay Smothers that much, alright but what's that money going toward instead? It's at the point now where I'm happy if they can break even on those groups, I'm almost past hoping for improvements.

Horton was a hired gun when he came here, just like going to 8&4,Formby to me was not that good, should've played inside but wants to be a tackle, Young wasn't the same after the injuries and danced in the hole to much, Keeley hurts ,was coming around and would've probably been a game changer this upcoming season, Bama isn't going to get the big time playmaker this late in the portal, but they can fill dept pieces and players who fit what they want

I appreciate you trying to add some clarity and explain why some concerns are valid.

But you see as @BearFoot has observed this type of thing is a repetitive waste of time and energy:

“I’m watching in real time, as the “vocal minority” from both sides of the issue continue to repeat their position over and over and over…saying the same thing in a million different ways…as if saying it one more time might finally validate their feelings, and cause those across the fence to finally acquiesce.

Fascinatingly, it’s the same scenario we see played out over and over on national, as well as world issues. Human Beings are amazingly complex, yet amazingly predictable…which is why “Psy-Ops” has always been effective throughout human history.”

Now me I think you are making some fair observations and are in good faith trying to explain why our portal activity is possibly troubling as we are seeing it unfold in real time.

I don’t think I have the energy to offer much commentary anymore.

Consider me Psy-Op’d, predictable human being that I am.

Carry on everybody…. Or don’t I guess.

I’m out.

Counter point: nobody outside the building knows what their plan is, you guys are assuming there isn’t one.

Staff deserves criticism for the NC state back, no doubt. Going after smaller backs with home run speed doesn’t mean he’s not learned anything. Isn’t Daniel Hill still here? Isn’t Crowell around 200 pounds?

You guys come across as cry babies because you’re not even being patient. You want them to evaluate the talent, negotiate, and sign the talent yesterday! This isn’t a vacuum, there is outside competition that has to be dealt with.

Let’s not even get started on how you guys would’ve responded if Bama signed Coleman for $2 million. Then that money could’ve been spent on another area.

Bottom line: nothing this staff can do will be right for some of you guys, and yall need to look inside to figure out why that is.
