Trump administration pushes nations to sign ‘trade over aid’ declaration

Secretary of State Marco Rubio called it an opportunity to use the U.N. system to “promote America First values,” according to a cable reviewed by The Post.
The Trump administration is pushing countries around the world to sign a joint declaration that calls for “trade over aid” and explicitly rejects America’s history as a leading provider of humanitarian assistance and other support to the developing world.

In a cable sent Wednesday to all U.S. embassies and consular posts, Secretary of State Marco Rubio ordered American diplomats to issue a démarche — an official call to action — to foreign nations no later than Monday that asks for their backing before the U.S. initiative is introduced at the United Nations at the end of April.

The “trade over aid” push is an opportunity, Rubio’s directive says, to use the U.N. system to “promote America First values and create business opportunities for U.S. companies.” The Washington Post reviewed a copy of his cable, which has not previously been reported.

The move comes as the Trump administration has sought to dramatically remake the global aid system, dismantling the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID) and pulling back funding from multilateral efforts at the United Nations, arguing that such initiatives have led to waste, fraud and dependency.

All this while advocating a $1.5 trillion defense budget - certainly no waste or fraud there.

Amid quarrel with pope, Trump strips Miami charity of funding to house migrant kids

The Trump administration has abruptly canceled an $11 million contract with Catholic Charities to shelter and care for migrant children who enter the U.S. alone, ending a relationship between the Catholic Church and the U.S. government dating back to the first arrivals of Cuban exiles in South Florida. The development comes amid rising tensions between the administration and American Catholics over President Donald Trump’s heated criticism of the Vatican’s first American pope, Leo XIV. The pontiff has made opposition to the U.S. war with Iran, as well as concern for the welfare of migrants, a cornerstone of his ministry.

Everything Trump Touches Dies

John Eastman, the slimeball who concocted the idea and fed it to Trump that Mike Pence possessed the power of Greyskull and could overturn the votes of 156 million people all by himself, has been disbarred like pretty much every prominent lawyer Trump ever employed for more than a few days.

An interesting question... There have been a great number of laws and rules broken blatantly and openly by Trump admin officials. How far will the Dems go if and when they regain power? How far should they go?

i guess this explains some of the orban love among the right

I don't get the MAGA love for Orban. The closest I can come to it is Orban was always screaming about the scary, scary immigrants.

I told my MAGA younger brother that Reagan should have said, "Mr Gorbachev, please don't tear down this wall." MAGA is in love with the klleptocrats running Russia. Must be a lot dirty pictures in Putin's filing cabinet.

I don't get it. Vance is "proud" of steering US aid away from Ukraine. This is not the party of Reagan anymore. By a long shot

Trump to Nominate Doctor Who Has Publicly Supported Vaccines as C.D.C. Director

Dr. Erica Schwartz is seen as a highly qualified traditional choice and tapping her is the strongest signal yet that the administration is veering away from vaccine skepticism this election year.

Kudos to Trump for making a good choice! I hope I can post about more wise and thoughtful decisions coming from his administration.

Your last point is what l get particularly irked when the “Reagan paved the way for Trump” nonsense comes up. I can admit Reagan was a flawed President without thinking he’s in the same solar system as Trump. Reagan truly DID believe that trickle down would work, even though he was wrong. Trump doesn’t believe anything except he’s the best looking, smartest human who ever existed.

And I’m watching people who adored the man 40 years ago think that we should side with Russia over Ukraine “because Trump.”

Generally speaking, the next regime rarely does this because the reality is that probably every president - when you get right down to it - has in the technical sense broken the law even unintentionally in some cases. One thing I knew long before Trump is that almost everyone’s desire to see a president thrown in the slammer is proportional to the contempt in which they held that president when he was in office.

But there also HAS to be a line SOMEWHERE, too.

about time they give that nonsense a rest. the barrage of idiocy we had to deal with around “skepticism” and “just asking questions” was very damaging. i’m hoping we have gone too far in destroying the cdc (among many other things)
