GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Former Kentucky guard Denzel Aberdeen is headed back to Florida — possibly to play basketball again.
Aberdeen visited with the Gators on Friday and then announced he is planning to re-enroll at the university to finish his undergraduate degree.
“Thankful for the opportunity to finish my academic journey back home at the place where it started,” Aberdeen wrote in an Instagram post.
He also would like to finish his basketball career where it started. Aberdeen spent three years at Florida and helped the Gators win the national championship in 2025. He transferred to Kentucky for what was supposed to be his final season and lost all three meetings against his former team.
Now, he’s back and hoping to convince the NCAA that his freshman year in Gainesville should be considered a redshirt season. The 6-foot-5 Orlando native played just 12 games in 2022-23, scoring 19 points in 41 total minutes. He would need a waiver from the NCAA to land another year of eligibility.

Former Kentucky guard Denzel Aberdeen is headed back to Florida — possibly to play basketball again.
Currently, playing in one official game eliminates the player's eligibility for a regular redshirt.
Medical redshirt has the rule that the player has to have played in less than 30% of the team's games and the injury has to have occurred in the first half of the season.
I think changes to the redshirt rules are being looked at and could be implemented as early as this upcoming season.
Dylan Mingo has decommited from UNC. I know we were in on him when his recruitment was open last, so this might be someone who ends up falling into our lap, kinda like how Philon did. We do need another guard, so this would be perfect.

Condon, an instrumental part of Florida's 2024-25 championship team and a two-time All-SEC selection, will rejoin the Gators for a fourth year. Florida went 27-8 this season, earning a No. 1 NCAA tournament seed before falling to Iowa in a second-round upset, ending its repeat chances.
"It's not the result that we wanted at the end of the year," Condon told ESPN. "I think we're a better team than that. So, [we] left a bit of unfinished business with the Gators. So to go back to school and compete -- we know what it's like to win a national championship, and that's the No. 1 goal for me."

The 6-foot-9 Pennsylvania native's decision to return follows the same announcement last week from frontcourt mate Alex Condon, while starting center Rueben Chinyelu announced Monday he's testing the NBA draft waters but will maintain his college eligibility to return to Florida if he withdraws from the draft.
"Most guys in my position in the draft, it would be a no-brainer to go to the NBA," Haugh told ESPN. "It's not just the NIL. It's a chance to play with my boys. To play for coach [Todd] Golden. To go to the school I love to play for. It was definitely a tougher decision than last year, but it was best for my career and future."
