Well it still says until 01/19/25 so it encompasses the whole Biden and 1st Trump presidencies

The problem is that the pardon only covers him from things from 2019 to January 19,2026. The fear is that Rand Paul isn’t using the hearings in good faith and he is trying use it as an avenue to embarrass Fauci or make him to commit perjury on the record. These are the same people who called Hillary Clinton up on the Epstein files when they knew she absolutely had nothing to do with them. It was always about embarrassing or trying to get her to lie under oath and never about finding the truth. No sane person would answer the questions under these circumstances. So Fauci did the right thing strategically and for himself personally. Rand is probably going to get momentum for a contempt charge but it will probably create a constitutional debate that even this Republican led SCOTUS doesn’t want to dabble into.

Paul is swimming upstream with this and will be hard pressed to make anything stick. It is all performative and based on the fact that his ego is hurt that he is widely regarded as a failure MD wise, while Fauci has long had a great reputation and has carried out multiple major projects that have saved millions of lives.

Fauci did all that in the face of an admin that interfered in the 1980s as the wanted to sweep AIDS under the rug, and for and admin run by an idiot during COVID.

Not really. Like most things the truth is rarely as interesting as the conspiracy around coincidences. The reason 2014 is the starting point is largely due to Fauci leading the government’s response to the Ebola outbreak starting in 2014. Its where failed doctors like Paul couldn’t constantly try to bring him in for his responses to outbreaks responses he was leading to continuously bring up COVID.

Did any of y'all see the HBO film "And the Band Played On"? It came out in the early 90's and based on the Randy Shiltz book of the same name. It was about the early days of the AIDS epidemic and it really didn't pull its punches about anyone who contributed to the issue (good or bad.) Anyway, I've seen it several times and read the book and I honestly can't recall hearing Fauci's name.

Whether Paul can prosecute Fauci at all is really tangled, legally, when you get into it, but the answer comes up "probably not." At any rate, Fauci did exactly the right thing yesterday. I expect Paul to refer contempt charges to the DOJ. A puppet DOJ that will charge a man for photo of a line of seashells will prosecute him...

I haven't heard anything...

I do find the claims that "Fauci made COVID" because "Ecohealth funded research at the WVI" pretty laughable. The Ecohealth funding and experiments were on coronaviruses unrelated to COVID and did not meet the criteria for gain of function. Paul and his ilk stating otherwise is a lie, or they are just too stupid to understand it since they have a hard time with facts and complexity.

Then there is the notion that Fauci personally oversaw 5000 grants a year and meddled with the subcontracting as the NIAID director to make COVID. I doubt he knew the content of most of the grants. I mean, it is not like he is Trump, whose steel trap mind knows every little fact like an encyclopedia.

I read the book years ago... Fauci was criticized more in the mid to late 80s as clinical trial results were "slow" to come in according to the AIDS activist groups. At the time, the FDA mandated slow and rigorous clinical studies and the process suffered. Fauci was instrumental in developed fast track approval and reaching out to the AIDS activists and involving them in the process. At the same time he was criticized for "allowing AZT on the market too quickly." He only had so much funding and the Reagan admin was not exactly interested in doing anything in this space.

I can't see how this helps in the midterms, but I'm not very savvy wrt how MAGA supporters think, despite knowing quite a few of them.

I just want him to be punished if he lied and was part of the cause of on-going damage to people's lives due to the manipulation. I don't care one bit as to how this affects the midterms as I'm convinced it won't matter one way or the other - we either continue with a feckless republican majority or we get a new wave of empty impeachments if the democrats win.

It's called "the scientific method." Early, they concentrated on fomite transmission, because of the flu analogy. That was very logical at that point. Then, when the fragility of the virus on most surfaces became obvious, they dropped it. As always, the chorus from the right was "You lied!!" Idiocy!
