Lindy's take on UAB, Fisher, Bama, and Saban

  • Hi Guest, we are working on updating the site servers and software. We're also 'forcing' everyone to read and agree to our site privacy policy and terms of service. There are no significant changes to either of these but the terms page does clarify a few things that are mostly in the legalese. You can just click the checkbox for both and continue using the site as usual! We'll update you more on the site upgrades VERY soon! THANK YOU AS ALWAYS for supporting the site and being an active participant!

UAB is not losing money on football anymore. Agreed that there was once a time where that was a case, but not anymore nor have we been losing money in about 4-5 years. We're not making millions, but we're certainly not the drain so many of your fans make it out to be. But by all means, put your money where your mouth is so to speak. If you think we're that big of a drain, call Alabama and voice your support for a split of UAB from the System. It may just happen anyway before it's all over. The mission of the BOT is to look after the interests of all schools equally. When UAB won its autonomy in 1969, it was supposed to make UAB, UAH, and UA equal in the eyes of the BOT. It's clear this is not the case. You may think that's right, but it clearly goes against the mission of the BOT.

BTW, any of you Birmingham area folks should watch The Zone tonight... it should be interesting.

I for one would be ecstatic if Houston Nutt was hired. I think he's a great motivator, his teams seem ready to play every game, he's got cajones (hiring the high school OC), he had a player finish second in the Heisman balloting this year, a trip or two to Atlanta, and you can't argue with his record against Bama and Auburn....whats not to like??
I don't want to see him here! Probably the only reason his name is brought up is because he's good at taking aubie to the woodshed!

if jimbo fisher is the next bob stoops, why didn't any of the other div 1 schools hire him? there were many to choose from this year, in alot better positions and conferences than uab.

I didn't realize there was a grassy knoll on the quad!

I really don't know where you get the idea that UAB is not losing money. UAB football is a hole.

...Trustees on Friday also approved the budget for the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where athletics needs $7 million of UAB academic money to meet expenses.

UAB men's basketball is the only sport with a positive cash flow, bringing in $538,000 after expenses, which offsets the $477,000 lost by football.

UA Football on the other hand, creates a positive revenue stream of $13.6M

UAB should not have football, unless it is D2 or D3.

^ Yes, they use student fees to help offset the costs... hence the reason the students want a say in what goes on. UAB students are paying this. None of it is coming from the system. So yes, in the sense that we're operating at 0 deficit as far as the system is concerned, it is correct. 57% of our athletics budget comes from student fees at UAB.

I agree. Nutt is the kinda guy you hate until he's on your team. How many times has he out coached us and beat us with inferior talent? Do I truly want him to be the next coach? No, but we could certainly do worse.

I think Nutt's success against us has more to do with who is walking on our sidelines rather than his great coaching skills. He is not a horrible coach, but I would rather have a good, upcoming asst. coach than have Nutt.

Well, considering the (previously) overwhelming number of people on this board who raved over the qualifications of both Dubose and Shula over the years, I'm thinking their judge of coaching ability is sketchy at best.

And for the argument that "the reason they beat us isn't because they were coached well, but rather that we were coached bad" is an innovative new way judge coaches. I'm sure that same standard applies whenever we've WON too right? :rolleye2:

UAB should be a 1-AA team.

I quit liking UAB after UAB fired Jim Hilliard and hired national loser watson brown. UAB did that. Jim would have won at the helm and I would have been a UAB and Bama fan. Or if you are going to fire Jim, hire a winner. But UAB wanted big time 1-A football, it needed to be 1-AA to be competitive and build a fan base. They pushed to hard for 1-A right off the bat.

Houston Nutt was on every coaching hot seat list at beginning of season. I can recall commentators saying how beating Bama probably saved his job 4 weeks into the season.

Yeah, I think we should grab this guy. ;) RTR.

Ridiculous. Here is the email I sent Mr. Cook. I may have been off base, but I couldn't stop myself.

Mr. Cook,

Although I have never done so before, I felt a strong need to write you an email to let you know how much I enjoyed your article entitled, Alabama Coaching Search Takes Bizarre Twist. Furthermore, I can't wait to read your thoughts on who shot JFK, alien crash debris at Area 51, the Loch Ness Monster, Bigfoot and other myths and conspiracy theories.

Thank you for the entertainment,

Lastest report...$2,710,489 in student fees.
Total operating expenses for the Athletic Dept. $18,872,742

57% ?!?!?

(those figures are based on the 04-05 year...06-07 hasn't been released...at least, I haven't seen it.)
