UAB is not losing money on football anymore. Agreed that there was once a time where that was a case, but not anymore nor have we been losing money in about 4-5 years. We're not making millions, but we're certainly not the drain so many of your fans make it out to be. But by all means, put your money where your mouth is so to speak. If you think we're that big of a drain, call Alabama and voice your support for a split of UAB from the System. It may just happen anyway before it's all over. The mission of the BOT is to look after the interests of all schools equally. When UAB won its autonomy in 1969, it was supposed to make UAB, UAH, and UA equal in the eyes of the BOT. It's clear this is not the case. You may think that's right, but it clearly goes against the mission of the BOT.

BTW, any of you Birmingham area folks should watch The Zone tonight... it should be interesting.
Here, folks, is a VERY ANGRY person. He takes his every opportunity to assail UA and the BoT. I would have thought by now he would have taken a nap and gotten rid of some of that hositility. Hey, BB...give it a rest, ok?

WJOX was discussing this morning that UAB had commitments from Wachovia Bank and Harbert to fund the $600k/year figure that is being thrown around throughout the life of the contract. IMHO, the BOT meddled where they shouldn't have. When UAB had the money lined up, they had no business micromanaging who gets hired. Didn't the Auburn BOTs get slammed for micromanaging Auburn? (see the article)

Coach Bryant left Junior with
far more dollars than "CENTS".

Junior has an "everybody has a price" life style.
His ego has been bruised by Spurrier telling him, "it's not about money":
RR telling him, "some things mean more than money:
and finding out that the Dolphins orginization has deeper pockets than he does.

He had to money/ bully someone around to feel better,
so he picked on UAB,
you can't have Sullivan,
you can't afford Fisher,
I'll let you have Neal.

Lastest report...$2,710,489 in student fees.
Total operating expenses for the Athletic Dept. $18,872,742

57% ?!?!?

(those figures are based on the 04-05 year...06-07 hasn't been released...at least, I haven't seen it.)
You're right. It's 57% of student fees go to the athletic department... not that it constitutes 57% of the budget. But one thing that probably helps are all of our units from NCAA basketball tournaments over the last 3 years. They did also raise ticket prices which increased the profit margin and allowed us to reach a 0 deficit.

While I agree with you that the BOT should have stayed out of it if private donors were willing to foot the bill, you're killing your case with misleading facts. I posted this in another thread, but you must have missed it, so I'll post it again here. http://www2.indystar.com/NCAA_financial_reports/revenue_stat/show?school_id=159 shows that 1/3 of UAB's athletic department budget comes from "direct institutional support." While that may balance the athletic department budget from an accounting perspective, it's only due to a sizable expense to the University's budget.

Also, it doesn't matter what the face value of the tickets are if they are free in the newspaper.

Palm... UAB does not do that anymore. UAB hasn't given away free tickets, as a matter of fact, since then. Now, some say they get "free tickets" even today, but that's not true. Lots of local coporations BUY tickets and then distribute them to their employees and their families... which then may spread out beyond that. Bottom line, they're paid for. UAB gives the head coach 4 free tickets, assistant coaches get 2 free tickets, but outside of that, EVERY SINGLE TICKET IS PAID FOR BY SOMEONE. Between that, the success of our basketball program, and higher ticket prices (as well as increasing attendance which many of you don't want to acknowledge), and that's why we're no longer operating at some monstrous deficit as has been suggested by some here.

Personally, I think UAB should ditch football and put all their money in their B-ball program. Of course, I'm just an outsider...but basketball is a lot easier sport to compete in for small schools/athletic departments.

At least after UAB was soundly defeated by Old Dominion in B-ball tonight (56-42), CMD put the blame squarely on his own shoulders. He blamed himself for not coaching them properly and not preparing them for ODU. UAB drops to 6-5 under Coach Davis.

UAB currently only has about 7 scholarship players of which 3 are freshmen. These struggles were not unanticipated. We've also played the 12th hardest schedule in the nation. We've already beaten DePaul, Minnesota, and Cincinnati.

Actually, you did better than some of the SEC schools, but still ended up in the red to the tune of 88K+

I've wondered the same thing. Could Mal's hands be tied by the BOT? Could they (the BOT) be really calling the shots?

Either way, we need to hurry up and make a decision soon. Bama is being laughed at.
Who cares what others like Cowherd think? 99% of the time they can't get their facts straight anyhow. I'd rather wait and get a good coach, than to rush into something.
