There seems to be a strong section of this board who do not want to see an Option attack at Bama. There is also a resistance to a true wide open Spread scheme. Rightfully so there has been a focus on the HC but who are some OCs that might be available, and what kind of scheme would they implement at Bama? Would we look at someone in the Pro's or College? I would lean toward the college game since they would be more used to working with kids and understand the unique challenge they would be facing.

If Saban comes, look for Jimbo Fisher to be OC. It might only be for one year, because Fisher will be a HC before long.

First off you want a OC that has a proven track record. Not a mediocre one where you where an ok coach just like Mike Shula. He never was on the first name list in the NFL as an OC. But that being said, you need teachers and communicators that will be able to develop the offensive unit into a well oiled machine.

I think that your offense should be determined by your personnel at first. It would be easier to take a running qb that can throw to run a standard pro offense to take a non-running qb into the wishbone. You recruit the players that fit your style. We have always been a hardnosed run first team. We have a nice set of backs that I think would keep this style in place. The option attack is very hard because frankly it is not a style of offense that fits in the NFL. You cant market your team to a player that has aspirations for the NFL and tell them hey we run the option. Players today need systems that develop them into pro prospects, sure they want to get an education, but lets be honest. The college game is a proving ground for many a young talent. So no wide recievers would come to Bama if we ran the option.

Personally, i like the hardnosed style with a potent passing attack. I dont think you can be one dimensional, like any portfolio you need to diversify. The spread offense doesnt thrill me totally but I can see its potential with the right QB and line and since FLA is in NC Game who can argue with it. The West Coast offense has a proven track record, though it gets monotonous to see 4 yd completions etc...but it seemed to work for the 49ers etc...The run and shoot, again too much emphasis on the passing game plus it requires complete communication between receivers and qbs.

BTW God bless you all and Happy New Year...hope you all have a blessed 2007

According to Shreveport Times, Jimbo Fisher has no clue. Oddly enough, his statement sounds more believeable than Saban's.

Depending on whom you believe, Fisher's hiring was blocked at Alabama-Birmingham recently because Paul Bryant Jr. wanted Fisher available to become Alabama's offensive coordinator under Saban. On Saturday, Fisher did not rule out working for Saban, a wicked task master, again. He also dropped an old Bear Bryant quote about jobs you should and shouldn't take and laughed about how unhappy Saban may be in his latest move.

If Saban does not go to Alabama, Alabama should hire Fisher if Bryant Jr. is smart.

"I don't know what's going to happen," Fisher said. "I haven't talked to him (Saban). I have no idea. I really don't know. I don't know. Because they (Alabama officials) haven't made a statement. I don't know. That one over there, I don't know."

This is a list of assistant coaches while Saban was at LSU make of it what you will. It might give some insight to what Saban, should he come, will look for in assistants. Notice there was quite a bit of turnover. Maybe if someone had wanted some of our coaches we would have had some turnover as well. ;)

Gary Gibbs DC
Pete Jenkins DL
Michael Haywood RB/Special Teams
Lance Thompson, TE/Recruiting
Tim Walton DBs
George Yarno, OL
Charlie Harbison, DBs
Stan Hixon, WR
Kirk Doll, LBs
Will Muschamp, DC
Mike Collins, LBs
Leroy Ryals, TE
Derrick Dooley, RB/Special Teams
James Coley, GA
Jimbo Fisher, OC/QB
Stacy Searels, OL
Freddie Kitchens, GA
Kirby Smart, DBs
Bobby Williams, WRs
Travis Jones, LBs

Don't know if I would bet the farm on Jimbo Fisher becoming the OC... but it is able to be used as great leverage for the FSU gig right now. Frankly, I believe Fisher will head to FSU with a guarantee at first shot in BB's wake. Base it on the facts that (1) Fisher probably feels a bit impatient for a HC gig and (2) we are hearing other names tossed around as more legitimate options.

Can you spill any beans about who the potential OC would be? or would that be telling too much?

No... for a couple of reasons. First is the fact that I don't know of any type of confirmation on any of the names... everything to this point on that particular staff member is guesswork. Second is the fact that names have been brought up... not just one. If/when Saban comes aboard, I'm sure it will be discussed.

If the story is true, Bryant Jr. (or the BOT in general for that matter) not signing off on the Fisher hire at UAB, I do not see Fisher coming to work as an OC for the same people who wouldn't hire hime as a HC.

He wants a HC job, and it's just a matter of time before he gets it. Why would he take a lateral job to to be the OC at AL? And I will not believe, "b/c he wants to work for Saban". I haven't heard any stories of NS asst. enjoying working for him, and they don't follow him from job to job.

Several coaches have followed Nick Saban around. Baggett, Bobby Williams, Travis Jones, Dooley(Now La Tech HC) are just a few that have followed Nick Saban around. Is he a hard ...? Yes---he expects perfection and giving 110% ALL the time from his assistants. The ones that do not want to do that leave or get fired. He is driven to win and he makes sure everyone around him wants and has the same desire to win or they get gone.

The article stated that JF "did not rule out working for Saban" at Alabama. No bones about the past events. If Saban does not come or if he picks another OC, then JF goes to FSU under CBB.

OUCH. Now that is funny. Where do you think Dave Rader will land after all of this? He may have been out of work before he came to Bama, but seems like someone could use him now.

It may be the other way around. If Saban comes to Bama - and if he offers Fisher a job - then maybe Fisher would not rule it out if all of his other options are exhausted. Think of it in terms of CJF would rather work for CNS than CLM if, if, the FSU job doesn't work out.

I think it has been noted that CBB has asked CJF to come to FSU as OC. Bowden said that JF won't make a decision until 1/10. I can't find the link.

I don't know how reliable it is, but footballscoop mentioned this a few days ago:

If Saban takes the job, look for Tom Clements (QB's at Green Bay) to be offensive coordinator and Kirby Smart (safeties at Miami) to be defensive coordinator. Tony Nathan may also join the staff.

Here is some background on Clements. He was offensive coordinator for the Bills for 2004-05.

Edit: I just noticed that he was Notre Dame's QB for the 1973 Sugar Bowl game. How ironic would it be if he ended up coaching here?

There have been persistent rumors that CJF doesn't like working for CLM and is open to a move. One good story involves an assistant who's worked for him before. When asked if he would be interested again, he made a statement that he'd been told by other head coaches that they expected 14 hr days, 7 days a week, but Saban was the first one who'd meant it...:)
