I think this thread has gotten a little out of hand with all the bashing of Mark Richt and calling the celebration "Thug-like". I still dont see how you get "Thug-like" if the Head Coach tells the team to celebrate as a team. These guys arent fighting or pulling out weapons.

Richt has built up a lot of capital with the media and fans because of several good gestures in the past so people will tend to overlook this incident. Just because most people like Richt doesn't make it right. EVERYONE would be criticizing this celebration if Florida had done it.
there was no malicous intent behind the celebration.in my opinion it fired both teams up! we needed an emotional lift and coach richt knew this. the better team won.

Unfortunately, there are a lot of fans who see a "thug" behind every tree. Sometimes I have to wonder if their kids are paralyzed through fear and scared to even walk out of the house because a "thug" might be lurking.

Classless but it fired them up. The team was down, they've played like crap the whole year and no one has really taken notice of the good things they have done. This forces people to take notice, perhaps not the way Richt envisioned, but attention is attention.

Excessive celebration is a penalty in college football because it often leads to fights between players. I think this was a bonehead move by Richt.

Granted he didn't order his players to go out and illegally chop block or grab some facemasks but he still ordered them to break a rule that exists for a reason.
I agree. The Head Coach sets the bar for behavior. What if all of the UF players had run out on the field? It could have happened, and then somebody gets shoved and fights break out and ejections happen and who is to blame...Mark Richt that's who.

Bonehead direction by the head coach.

lol. it didnt seem to boneheaded to me,look at the end result.did fights break out?was anyone shoved? none of the things you mentioned happened. bottom line is florida got dismantled and humiliated on national t.v. they didnt look so big and bad saturday afternoon. like i said we have endured far worse from them, they had it coming.

Umm, clearing the bench during the middle of the game is approaching thug-like behavior. You don't clear the bench without good reason. Also, you don't dance in the face of opposing players, both of which happened. I don't get why Richt is so above reproach. He didn't chew those players out, he encouraged it. I watched Georgia play three times this year and in all instances they demonstrated that they are not a classy bunch. Until I see his team act classy I refuse to call him classy, and yes running the entire team onto the field during the first quarter is classless. You think Gene Stallings or Bear Bryant or any old school coach would put up with that crap much less encourage it? Richt acts two faced in my opinion, he says one thing then does another. Stomp on a logo, clear the bench in the first quarter, taunting the student section... the team I saw is one of the more thuggish in the SEC.

Here's my problem. When a coach encourages the bench to take the field, events are unpredictable from that point on. Since it was the first drive, I think the UF bench was stunned, more than fired up. However, it could have happened that the UF bench would have emptied to answer the challenge. It easily could have ended in a mass brawl and ejections, even a forfeiture (by GA). It was an irresponsible act, and this argument being presented that it hyped up his team and helped them to when, well, hell, shooting them up with meth might have helped them win also. There are a lot of tactics against the rules which help win. I used to have respect for Richt. Never again...

LOL. Maybe nothing happened because UF had a little class. And BTW, Gerogia played a good game. They had a good game plan and executed it well. Congrats to the Dawgs and your NC game.

if you think that florida is a classy program you are mistaken. the intent of the celebration was not to cause a altercation it was to send a message that we came to play. as far as this being our national championship game its not.we would gladly trade this win for a national title. i am pretty confident in our ability to secure a national title in the coming years.

i respect your opinion, however i dont think you realize thedepth of the bitterness in this rivalry(you should=tenn) our players have had batteries thrown at them balloons filled with urine and many other things happen to them during the course of this rivalry.what we did pales in comparison to the things they have done.the last time my wife and myself went to this game we were almost assaulted by drunken florida fans.the bottom line is floridas fans and program lack the class everybody talks about.

I enjoyed it and thought it was a brilliant coaching move. If CNS had done this everyone would have loved it.

Anyone remember Derric Lassik (? spelling... goodness, my spelling is horrible tonight) in the 92 Sugar Bowl, running 15 yards to the 1, spinning the ball on the ground and getting flagged for it? It wasn't even celebrating, he was frustrated he didn't score, and we had to settle for a FG on that drive.

Ever since then, I am against the "excessive celebration" penalty. It's too broadly defined.

Those are fans, not the players. Different groups of people altogether.
