Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

What will this expansion bring our seating capacity to?

All I have heard is that it will over 100,000. They apparently considered a few different plans. At least one was more focused on skyboxes and would have still been under 100,000. But considering the driving forces for the expansion, it appears that they decided to do it with more focus on actual seating, and to get the total over 100,000.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

From what I have been told, it appears that Mal Moore will announce the south end zone expansion this month and they hope to have construction started in December.
You can't start construction on adding on to a house that quickly, let alone a stadium. From everything I've heard it's been to announce the plans this off season and start construction the day after the last game next year. That would also fit with the construction plans of the last two expansions.

The new south endzone would therefore open in time for the start of the 2009 season - the one everyone has been pointing to as our best first shot at a BCS Championship.

wow. Good times. Good times.

while I understand the boxes bring in the big bucks, I really would like to see them put as many individual seats in as comfortably possible.

I wonder, then, if he meant December of '08? That would make sense from what you've heard, and make sense from the what the poster said.

Does anyone know if the South Endzone addition will include the domed roof or is that a different phase?

That will be sweet. 100,000 fans, I still think there will not be enough tickets.

Related side note:

Should the Super Six Championships be moved from Legion Field to Bryant Denny? Or are they played in Birmingham to remove bias towards one school? Anyone have any idea? I know if I were a high school kid in the State Championship game, I would love to play in a big time college stadium.

If the Super 6 were in BDS, I might be inclined to actually go watch the games. Legion Field (and that whole area) scares the crap out of me.

I wouldn't mind seeing them rotate the Super 6 between BDS and Jerrdan Hair every other year. Until the Troy folks start whining...of course.

They're not doing a domed roof.

I hope when they do, they put the overhang on the N & S endzone like the E & W sides. Can you imagine how loud that would be?

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

What you likely saw was a drill rig doing soil borings for a geotechnical engineering firm to analyze. The main thing they'd be doing for that sort of addition would be to locate the elevation of rock and also to determine the bearing capacity of that rock. You need the elevation so the GC can estimate cost/length and for the SE to determine the drilled pier diameter. This is usually done very, very early in a project.

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

Since the NEZ couldn't be joined to the E&W decks, because of the difference in heights, I'd assume that situation will be the same on the SEZ. So, no dome could ever completely enclose the field. I'd assume that a partial dome could be supported on the E&W decks. John, do you have any idea why the decks are of unequal height? Seems like someone didn't think ahead...

Re: South Endzone Expansion update!!

Set up a free account at Photobucket, Putfile or another free hosting site and upload your pix to your account, then link it to this site by copying and pasting. The Photobucket software makes it easy - you get a drop-down below the pic, and when you click on the "img" tag, it pops up and says "copied." Then you just make your post here, right click and select "paste."
And - "Voila!" your pic appears here...
I love learning from smart folks! :) Thanks, Earle!
(Now...if I can just figure out how to print only your instructions!
..not the entire thread!)

100,000...Shoot I guarantee you there is at least 120,000 there already on game day. Lets see at 100,000 x 45.00 min ticket price(yeah right) = 4.5 million...soooo one home game pays for Saban salary and gives Bama a little pocket change to boot.:)

You're right, they didn't think ahead. However, I think that they would had a problem even if the decks were the same height. Because the endzone seats are much closer to the field than the sideline seats, the endzone upper deck had to be set back a few feet and the slope had to be much steeper.
