Hrmm 1-A ? I knew they were going to finally get it going but I would have never thought that. I just don't see how that can be correct. The petition numbers were gathered earlier this year and they had enough to go forward from there and knew it was just a matter of time then but that's an awful large jump from none to D1-A. That $50,000.00 number is way low IMO there won't be a problem raising well beyond that figure.

I've been looking forward to South getting a program going for awhile I dunno how thrilled I am about this route though. 5 Div 1 teams in Alabama? well it does give a chance for more kids to get on scholarships.

As far as the South wanting Alabama to schedule them I don't believe that will be a problem for sometime. Can't see many Alumni wanting that scenario anytime soon if ever.

So that would make 5 1-A teams in Alabama? We are a State of roughly 4.5 million, can we really support that many 1-A teams? Georgia has twice the people, but only 2 1-A teams, then you've got our western neighbor, Mississippi, with a million less people but 3 1-A teams, and they are deifinitely spread too thin between the 3 schools for in state recruiting.

Then to add to the 5 1-A teams, we've got 4 1-AA teams and at least 1 D2 program, plus at least 2 D3 programs. Can we sustain this may scholarshiped programs?

I think this is an incredibly large jump. Many thought UAB jumped too quickly, but not even UAB jumped from nothing to I-A. Supposedly, though, this is to avoid the moratorium put into effect by the NCAA. Jax State wanted to move up a division to I-A, but the NCAA said they would no longer consider moves up at the current time. However, it may be that South Alabama has found a loophole and hopes to jump right in to I-A status rathering than working their way up.

It is tough for this state to support 4 I-A teams... 5 is simply ridiculous. And if ever there were a need for a 5th team, I would say Jax State deserves it more than South Alabama. I bet this will have folks at Jax State fuming.

The University of South Alabama's board of trustees this morning unanimously approved starting a Division I-A football team for the Jaguars with plans to put a team on the field in 2009.

USA students are actually very excited about South getting football. If UAB, Samford, JSU and others can have football, then why not South? Mobile has NO football teams, we are due.

I agree, but D1 is different. Selfishly, maybe Alabama will come down for a game

My granddaughter is in school there and plays for the volleyball team, and she is excited about getting a football team; although she still is a crimson fan.
