Anybody here a fan of documentaries?

Just wondering if anyone else here enjoys watching documentaries every now and then.

The two best ones I have recently seen are Jesus Camp and The Bridge.

I watched Jesus Camp the other night on A&E.

The most ironic part about that film was the segment where Ted Haggard, the defrocked gay Colo. Springs minister, was preaching about the evils of homosexuality....while, the film was in production right during the time of his assignations with a male prostitute.

The film was also a cautionary tale about brainwashing in general. It is unfair to indict evangelicals as a whole based upon this one film, but these people portrayed in this film were pretty scary. I grew up around these types of zealots. What these folks are doing borders on child abuse.

I heard King of Kong, a look at two guys battling over Donkey Kong, was a fascinating documentary with a clear cut good guy and bad guy dynamic. It didn't play anywhere close to me so I'm picking it up when it is released on DVD.

It was very scary. At first you think that no, these people can't actually be serious, but they are. THAT is the scary thing. I agree with you when you say it borders on child abuse.

I'm a fan. But all too often those putting out the documentaries have a predetermined agenda that they are putting forward.

[Blue Devil Tide]

Roger and Me is a fine documentary, even with the Michael Moore association. I think it lacks some of the partisan politics that mar his later films--and is hilarious and actually interesting.

I second King of Kong. Great fun there.

Another is The Devil and Daniel Johnston. Fascinating look at an influential, tortured musician and artist with a cult-following. Really an amazing portrait of a great artist.

My Flesh and Blood: follows a California single mother with 11 adopted children, each of whom have diseases or physical disabilities (no legs, cystic fibrosis, etc.) An amazing, tragic, but beautiful film.

Another good one is "Cowboy Del Amor," about the unique life of an old cowboy in Texas who specializes in matching up American men and Mexican women.

2. SPOOKED: The Ghosts of Waverly Hills Sanitorium

3. Jack the Ripper: The Final Solution (old one that originally aired on BBC back in the seventies, still pretty good stuff.)

I like Errol Morris's work.

I've liked several documentaries by Joe Berlinger and Bruce Sinofsky.

I saw one called dope sick love that was pretty good. Also cocaine cowboys was about the boom in the drug trade in Miami in the 80's. The documentary about the movie deepthroat was pretty good too.

Fun thing is, I am from (and am currently back living) in Longview, the town where they hold that contest. I haven't seen the doc yet, but have heard nothing but good things about it.

They haven't had the contest in a few years after a guy who was in something like the 70th hour got eliminated ,went across the street, broke into a K-Mart, loaded a gun and shot himself in the store. Some people just really can't handle losing...

Roger and Me is a fine documentary, even with the Michael Moore association.

Even in this early endeavor you can see how Moore plays fast and loose with the truth/facts. He interviewed several downtrodden, unemployed families who never worked for GM. Eh, never let the facts get in the way of an agenda.
