they won't listen until we quit watching the pointless BCS games. They won't listen until we quit watching any bowl games after NYD, or at least quit watching the one(s) that are a week after NYD. Obviously, some people will watch, but once apathy sets in more and more, and fewer and fewer people are willing to stay up until 11:00 - 11:30 on a weeknight to watch a meaningless matchup and ratings suffer and advertising dollars with it...we'll get change.

They won't listen until the Rose Bowl loses ratings. The ACC, Big 12, Big East, and SEC are ready to jump on board with at least a +1 system. The Big 10 and PAC-10 are completely opposed to that and anything that will chip away at their leverage. The key in making change happen is devaluing the Rose Bowl, but that's not going to happen as long as it has an exclusive deal with ABC/ESPN.

Their first step needs to be winning their stinkin' DIVISION!!!!
If you think about it, it is a 3-4 team play-off. SEC Championship game (2 teams) vs. Another team for #1. If the other team's conference has a Championship game (2 teams), that makes 4 teams. Winning the stinkin' division of your conference can go along way.

Re: Georgia President Proposes an 8 Team College Football Playoff

All we need is a couple more years like this one, and Adams won't be the only one making these statements.

Problem is, was, and will be - the Rose Bowl/Big Ten/Pac Ten diehards who think that the Rose Bowl is "sooo important".

Re: Georgia President Proposes an 8 Team College Football Playoff

In a public statement and a letter to NCAA president Myles Brand, Georgia president Michael F. Adams, who is also chairman of the NCAA executive committee, called for an eight-team playoff to decide the national championship, with the opening rounds to be played in the four major BCS bowl games. He proposed the change be made as soon as the contracts that govern the BCS expire.

.....

Under his proposal, the schedule would return to 11 games from its current 12, with playoffs beginning at the major bowl games and extending two more Saturdays.
This is what I support. Eight teams are plenty for a playoff. Teams ranked ninth through whatever can still play their smaller bowl games. Very little would change ..... except that there would be no dispute on who the best team is.

then we would have even more arguements on who should be in and who should not be in. i personally like the plus one format. i do not think there is ever 8 teams worthy of contention.

If a playoff of eight teams more than covers the legimate contenders, than how can there be an argument of who should be in and who should be out? Can the #9 team really make much of a case?

Don't be fooled, he isn't serious about this. He is just blowing smoke and trying to give UGA some PR.

First of all, there is no way that over 100 schools are going to give up the money that the 12th game brings in for the off chance that they might get into the playoffs.

UF President Machen and Meyer were seeking this earlier this year AFTER we made it to the BCS title game. It looks stupid when you cry after you don't get what you want.

And by the way, if there is going to be a play off or plus one, Meyer will invent it.:biggrin2:

Quit whining and beat South Carolina.

EXACTLY!

OK so Georgia got left out this time. So what, man-up and win your games. What do we do when we do all this playoff nonsense and someone gets left out of that (and I guarantee you there will be, theres no perfect system).

again i do not think there were 8 worthy teams. i think you should win your conference first. with the plus one format it should have been LSU, Ohio State, USC, and either Oklahoma or Virginia Tech and that is it. Kansas, UGA finished third in their conference so no for them. Hawaii didn't even deserve to be in the bowl game they were in. plus with a playoff we would turn college football to something just like the NFL (shudder)

From that story...

Adams is the second SEC member president to advocate a playoff in the past year. Last year, University of Florida president James Bernard Machen -- whose Gators played in the BCS Championship Game and won the title -- said the time had come for a playoff system, but backed down from his position after conferring with his fellow SEC presidents.

Adams acknowledged that he has long opposed a playoff system, largely for academic reasons and because the season is already too long.
