Game Thread: OM Post Game Thread

miss did the same thing as kentucky, they stacked the line of scrimmage, to stop our rush game, and also put some pressure on jpw. we do not keep a fullback in the backfield to help with the blocking. we made them pay with two great passes in the first half, but, never again. we will need two halves at tenn.

I'm not bothered by a close win. I am however bothered by playing half of a game. Like numerous commentators said today we are a complete team, we just haven't played a complete game. If we could sustain our performance for 60 minutes no team can beat us.
Coach was right about the 5 or 6 plays. Atleast now we are making them. I remember a time when we were just "close" to winning.

I'll sure agree with that Dallas...It almost looks like we start working the clock at the beginning of the 3rd qtr!!! I'm not saying a 21 point lead on any D-1 team is small, and I don't think you have to pile on, but you've still got to run your offense, move the ball, and atleast get SOME points to keep the opponent depressed!!!

I really don't understand why it seems like we take our foot off the gas so early in these games. I know we're not about running up the score like U$C and the teams in the Little XII, but would it be so bad for us to stay aggressive for 60 minutes??? Are we going into some sort of conservative shell to avoid getting people hurt? Or are we really afraid that staying aggressive is going to cause us to turn the ball over and potentially give away the game? Heck, we coughed it up twice in the second half anyway!! Anyone have an answer?

We are not game planning it that way, it's just a lack of execution.

I think a few things coincide with why we struggle in the 2nd half.

1 is surely complacency.

Another biggie is that we play a lot of soft coverage to prevent big plays, yet allows teams to slowly, yet surely control the ball down the field (though sometimes we don't break)

To go along with that, we don't have a truly great pass rush without blitzing. We don't have that 1 dominant pass rusher. This defense would be something else if we still had a guy like Gilberry and we've got to develop someone to replace that kinda production either on the DL or at Jack (hopefully both). When we have such big leads, teams have to pass and we have to be able to rush the passer.

Our offensive line can get inconsistent, especially on pass plays and especially that right side. Drew is passable, but I'd love to get an upgrade at that position.

Coffee's fumbles are a real problem, and he needs to either correct it or take a back seat in the pecking order.

I hate it 'cause I love the guy, but I'm afraid you're right. Maybe I'd give him another chance before I changed the depth chart, but it wouldn't surprise me if CNS has already made that decision, seeing as how Coffee's fumbles almost cost us the Ole Miss game last year as well. It's not a new thing.

He'd still be my #1 back for short yardage situations though.

Two things, first addressing the fumbles. In the post game press conf CNS was not ready to pin that fumble on Coffee. He said that the play was not blocked correctly and he thought Glenn was hit before he even had the ball tucked.

Secondly about the let down in the second half. It is frustrating to all of us, its frustrating for Coach and honestly I think its frustrating to some on the team as well. There is a clear lack of intensity and that is the problem. Yes of course the calls are different on defense if you have a big lead. I think that side of the ball is doing what's asked. CNS doesn't care about style points, he believes in winning the game. I learned a lot about him after the ky game when he wasn't upset ky scored and it cut the margin, he was upset they scored quickly and had a chance at an onside and therefore a chance to win. So he isn't worried about margin of victory. The problem is you can call a conservative defense and ride your cushion only if your offense can maintain their drives and burn clock. You don't care if they score a few if you take 20 mins off the clock and add 10 more points yourself.

Just like I didn't think Texas deserved to jump us last week. But given the way we played in the second half today, there's no way I would put us ahead of Texas.

OU showed today how to take care of business against a very good and ranked Kansas team. Right now they are playing better than we are. JMO

Dman,

IMHO, Kansas is not that good. they are currently 5-2.
their wins are not impressive at all. their defense kept them in many games last season, but that is the case this year. they are giving up many points this season even in their wins. in their 2 losses against good and ranked teams, they have given up an average of 40 points per game. their offense is efficient though and will keep them competitive throughout the season.

wins:

Florida Int. (3-4)
La. Tech (3-3)
Sam Houston State (2-3)
Iowa St. (2-5) they won 35-33
Colorado (4-3) only winning record thus far

losses:

#19 South Florida (6-1) 37-34
#4 Oklahoma (6-1) 45-31

The fumbles have been addressed. Not corrected. Coach has Coffee carrying the ball to class and practicing tucking the ball correctly.
I don't see the lack of intensity that you see.

So far the process is working (JPW has not been put in a situation to fumble the game away) and it may be 2 - 3 years of good recruiting and maturity from our young team before we have all the pieces in place to do everything we want. I'm enjoying the ride.

Well guys you might as well say I won the game for Bama today. I was wearing my unlucky Bama white shirt today, yes the shirt that every time Ive worn it Bama has lost.Like last years fsu game.I was bound and determined to wear it for the whole game just to prove it wasnt unlucky.I paced, I gritted my teeth,I cried,I yelled at the tv, kicked the dog(dont worry it was the neighbors dog), and I pulled my hair. However when I could take no more and ole sis was driving on their last drive I decided it was time for a change. You see I was a tad smarter this year and had my lucky UNDEFEATED Crimson shirt with me. So I stripped the wicked wretched unholy thing from my body and put on the Crimson shirt and almost like clockwork ole sis went 4 and out. Some of you may want me to burn the White shirt but it is such a nice shirt and I hate to do anything like that to anything that has Bama on it. So I'll give it another try, maybe I'll wear it during the ark st game, one we should be guaranteed to win. But if we get off track and things start to look scary I will discard it at the appropriate time.If the curse isnt showing any signs of being lifted then I guess I will wash it, fold it up , and put it away to be never worn again.I just thought you guys should know what was the real cause of Bama's close win tonight.

The next time I see a player pose in the endzone after a score I am going to hold blame against the coaches. I thought McCoy could have (maybe should have) been flagged for unsportsmanlike conduct as well as Maze. :mad2:

I don't expect it to happen for about the next five years, though. ;)

I think sometimes the refs are too picky.Like the guy who scored the td and threw the ball over his head costing his team 15 yards on the extra point. Yes you should act like you've done it before but a person cant help getting a little excited. The horse collar rule, head to head, and qb protection has gotten crazy. Id rather have a 5 yd fask mask penalty back and the halo rule for punt returners than a db get penalized because he hit the qb while the qb had the ball and was running.

BFANLC: You were so close to proving that your "unlucky" Bama shirt was in fact, NOT unlucky. I have never known anything with the Alabama logo to actually be "Non-Lucky." However, for the sake of all UA Fans, please find a dark spot in your basement to store said article and quickly forget where that location is. You could try giving it to your neighbor, but may find the dog wearing it the next time he strolls near your yard, which would be worse than burning the darn thing. Thanks for your help with the win!

Isn't it getting a bit old? We have been struggling for over a decade now...

Here are a few notable quotes from Rolltide.com :

Junior cornerback Javier Arenas:
On Rashad Johnson getting an interception:
“You could definitely tell the difference in his attitude. He’s always been positive. Before, he was Rashad and doing his thing but after he was a tad bit more excited. We couldn’t shut him up. Don’t tell him I said that though, he’s got my back in cover two.”

Sophomore nose guard Josh Chapman:
On replacing Terrence Cody:
“I guess my job is just to try to bring the same thing that he brought to the table. He brings a lot of energy out there. He’s a funny guy. I guess I can throw a couple jokes out there to try to help the team. I can’t jump on a pile like he did. He was like a little frog out there, or a big frog.”
