Is it me, or has the Birmingham sports radio market turned for the worst since the the Citadel reschedule last year? Some of the shows are just pathetic. One in particular, the roundtable seems to have no pulse on either the Bama or Auby fan. Their views are way off from what the average fans thinks. Yesterday for example you get this; "Bad news at Alabama coming up in the next segment", then they go on to do a attempted humor routine where one of them calls their wife and complains about what she pack him for lunch......the whole time my humor is gone because I am wondering what the "Bad News" is, which ended up being nothing. Another example was one of the host saying that Bama fans would have backed coach Saban if he had called two time outs at the end of an Auburn game, like Urban Myers did a couple of weeks ago. I don't know very many Alabama fans that encourage classlessness or revenge in that nature. Our nature is to whoop some butt and shake hands. Anyway I am ranting now, but these shows are garbage and without any competition.....which is the problem.

Anyway some of my least favorites are the extreme commercials, too many handicap segments, The drunk Tony in the morning, Roxanne and her obnoxious laugh, the roundtable, bad syndication on the AM station, the ridding of good talent on the morning AM show.

Basically you have Finebaum and the Opening Drive, the rest just plain stink.
The show after the roundtable is o.k., but overall, this is the worst sports talk radio in B'ham since its inception.

Does anyone remember some quality shows that they have done away with in the past 15 years? I can't remember them all, but there is a bunch.

Comments welcome.

You know ESPN kind of directs how things are done to a certain extent too don't you? I think the Roundtable is a good show for getting sports entertainment. Essentially, you have three different shows with three different pulses. The Opening Drive is where you hear your news on Bama and Auburn as well as getting some NFL stuff sprinkled in here and there. Finebaum is there to stir the pot and get great guests like Herbstriet, Stallings, Dye, Hurt, etc. The Roundtable is there to break up the day and give you insight to the entertainment side of sports. Trust me...if all you got was Bama and Auburn news all day it would get old...especially in the off-season. I think it works well...with the local stuff on while you're driving to and from work with the entertainment during the day. Plus if you don't like Finebaum just switch over to the AM station to catch D&B...who do a better job of talking about local sports than Finebaum in my opinion. I don't know...just my two cents.

Actually what has happened is that WJOX has gone to basically the format you'd find at The Ticket in Dallas. They had a roundtable that SUCKED because 99.9% of it wasn't sports. It's a time to do more entertaining then anything.

Anyway, I also don't believe that ESPN has much to do with it at all...it has to do with their RATINGS! Period, plain and simple and in the past their ratings have suffered. Of course much of it in my opinion has been due to their inability to stick with a format or a show for any length of time. Finebaum is the best we've got, which is SCARY! He can either be really good or really bad. Today, with Barbara Dooley was great!

I normally listen to the Opening Drive on the way to work and I enjoy it a great deal. I listen to Finebaum on the way home...and contrary to how many on this board feel, I usually enjoy his show also. You've got to take everything Finebaum says with a grain of salt and understand why he says some of the things he does...it's all business.

I do agree, however, that the Roundtable is not really worth listening to. It rarely has direction...and I'm just not a big fan.

I must disagree concerning the "roundtable" show. I enjoy listening to the guys on "the morning drive" and I can stomach small doses of Finebaum, but I cannot under any circumstances understand how that feminine hygiene product who is opposite Lance on the roundtable stays gainfully employed. Lance I can live with, but that other hack is neither insightful nor intelligent. Therefore I no longer listen to it. If they replaced that show with D&B I would be ecstatic.

You gotta remember that the middle of the day is their lowest rated time. Most of their listeners are between 7 to 9 and 4 to 6. That's when the best guests are on during those shows as well. I don't mind the Roundtable for what it is...sports entertainment. You can always just turn it to 96.5 and listen to some Christmas music.

I agree. Today they were talking about how Bama fans want Gottfried fired and were scolding Bama fans for not supporting the basketball program like the football program. I think that most Bama fans want to support the basketball but are just fed up Gottfried.

IMO the Birmingham market has always been sold short because of the Alabama/Auburn passion. It seems it's always been, "just throw a hack on the air and talk Alabama/Auburn football, up or down, and take phone calls." Personally I can't think of any show that I would call great. I just put up with most of them.

Ian,Lance, and Ryan sound more like 3 children that locked the adults out of the studio and started broadcasting. I can't listen to them without feeling sorry for their wives and kids.

If they would just get rid of the darn roundtable and put some of their discarded better talent, things would be o.k, Heck Lee Davis is better than those clown. They guy they kicked off the morning AM show would be a good candidate. Just get someone that understands the fan base, those guys do not. They basically tow the ESPN line as far as their views of our fan base. At least Finebaum get's it somewhat.

Dunaway & Brown is by far the best Bham show. The Roundtable is good. Lance has always fit it well. I wish he could team up with Tony from the OD. I remember when Lance started the Table with Scott.. does anyone remember that? If it wasn't for Jay I wouldn't even pay attention to the OD. With all that said I do think the Bham sports talk radio is probably as best as it's ever been. I do miss Doug Bell on the Source.. that was a great show. But I am glad Herb is gone along with "The First Lady of Bham" Kelly Hunter in the afternoon

Lance Taylor and Ian Fitzsimmons are both tools. They talk to each other too much and it disencourages callers from participating. They are both just flat out boring, too.

Although I did think it was funny though when Fitzsimmons got arrested in Shelby County on an old bad check warrant.

I actually like listening to Ian and Lance, but I really think they are in the wrong time slot. I think if the station switched the current OD crew and roundtable, it might make for easier listening. Something about having to hear Tony's voice in the morning while I'm usually taking my morning break or eating breakfast just doesn't go over well and is rather nauseating. Finebaum is definitely the crown jewel and is by far the best show in Bham, IMO. I like Jim Dunnaway, but he is too much of a homer. I agree that Finebaum definitely thrives off chaos and controversy, but I think he is an equal opportunity basher in that regard.
