Bama (finally) Fires OL Coach Kapilovic

Sam pitman not a reasonable choice?

Pittman is retired and I'm told isn't really interested in getting back into things, at least not now.

The two names I've heard that I believe are the most involved are Vanderbilt's Chris Klenakis, who has ties to the Wommacks and also was Chris Ault's OC/OL coach during the time Ault invented the Pistol offense at Nevada, and Missouri's Brandon Jones.

There is also a bit of attention on Eric Mateos, who was recently hired at Wisconsin but has prior ties to the SEC when he was Arkansas' OL coach under Sam Pittman and also coached at LSU.

I'm a little less sure about Mateos than the other two, but hiring either Klenakis or Jones would be "home run" territory for me.

Any other potential changes?

I missed this announcement until late last night!

I've said many times CKD hasn't won as much as he has by being dumb. Whether OL was THE problem or not, it definetly wsa PART of the problem.

Going forward, I believe we start seeing some improvement. It's hard to imagine it could get any worse than what we saw on the field last year!

And with a brand new starter next year, we'll need a running game to take pressure off him.

Imagine that, DeBoer knows a little bit about effective football coaching, in spite of what some Tidefans posters think.
Imagine being micro-managed in your job by hundreds of thousands of people who have never done what you do…but who gather together on a public forum 24-hrs a day telling you how you should be doing it

I could handle it much better getting paid $10 million/year. Fans and people do the same though when you only make $1500/yr.

Yep. It comes with territory, whether we like it or not. Reason in my last job I never wanted to move above an executive director position into a VP role. I got enough criticism from clueless people. Not that I was above criticism. It was the stuff that was fundamentally unfair that gets to you.

When you’re making $10 million a year and running a program considered a top five job in college football, it comes with territory. Heavy is the head that wears the crown. You best understand that walking in.

I have zero problems critiquing a $10mm / yr coach (or a $1mm/ yr coach). MMQB'ing what we do. While we want to do it in a fairly respectful way, the money the coaches and players are getting these days and the hopping around from job to job / team to team has really changed the game as far as what we tolerate. For example, I have a very low tolerance for a non-existent (pathetic) running game. What we saw this year from the run game is unacceptable by every measure.

Apparently, it is also unacceptable to our coach, thankfully, who (like many former Bama OL) saw major problems with OL scheming & technique. I know zero about OL scheming / technique but don't have to know anything about those to recognize what we saw isn't Bama Standard.

Let's see what happens at the RB position over the coming days and weeks, as well.

Obviously, my critique from the cheap seats in no way means I'm less of a fan. I'm also a realist and recognize the winds of change (portal, NIL, cash grabs, etc.) don't blow in our favor like they are currently are toward Texas, Texas Tech, BYU, Indiana, etc. who have deep pocketed billionaire alums who are throwing cash at their programs. Regardless, we have a standard that isn't being lived up to in certain areas. Evenso, we made the playoffs this year, so it isn't totally falling apart.

Well written sir. You took emotion out of this and presented from neutral perspective. Love this!

I’ve for sure been one of the ‘negative’ or ‘critical’ voices about the last 2 seasons.

For me it comes from a place of passion and concern for the Program that I care about.

I’m very similar to @KrAzY3 and he touched on this in another thread but it also comes from a place of trying to divorce yourself from bias and emotions and dig into the trends and statistical data to try and isolate where we have weaknesses and what we might need to address to improve.

So on that note I’m also willing to give credit when it’s due and this is a very welcome staff move.

I give Kudos to CKD for realizing there was a major problem with our OL and not only addressing it by making it a priority in the Portal but also making I’m sure a tough personal call to make a Position Coaching Change.

If we can add a new OL Coach that has an established track record for physical and successful OL play we will for sure be trending in a more positive direction.

The last 7-10 days or so just about everything that has been a legitimate concern has been addressed to a degree.

I think we still need to try and add an experienced RB1 somehow but since Pringle is headed back to Miami I’m not sure one is even available now.

Neither here nor there I’m encouraged by this Staff move.

I applaud CKD for making the tough decision to move on from coach Kap. I hate to see anyone lose their job, but this is a results-oriented business as any business is. Wish Coach Kap the best, but Bama has a certain standard and the last two years we all know that standard hasn't been met. Now we'll see what OL coach he can bring in. CKD understands the expectations of Bama football, and it also is the expectations he is wanting to achieve following one of the greatest football coaches at Bama. CKD knows the expectations of the fan base, but also the powers that be.
