2026 - They died this year

Dash Crofts, the surviving half of Seals and Crofts, has reportedly died. His passing was confirmed by Louie Shelton, who produced the '70s hitmakers.

Seals and Crofts split in the early '80s, before briefly reuniting in the '90s and '00s. "Around 1980, we were still drawing 10,000 to 12,000 people at concerts" Seals later told the Los Angeles Times, "but we could see, with this change coming where everybody wanted dance music, that those days were numbered."

Dash Crofts eventually returned to his native Texas, where he raised horses late in life. His lone solo album, 1998's Today, included some updated Seals and Crofts material. Jim Seals, the older brother of Danny "England Dan" Seals, died in 2022.

Chip Taylor, Songwriters Hall of Fame Member Who Wrote ‘Wild Thing’ and ‘Angel of the Morning,’ Dies at 86

I have known of Chip Taylor for over half my life, but never knew he was John Voight's brother.

Henry Lee has passed.

(I'll struggle to be nice).

Henry Lee was a forensic scientist who testified in the OJ Simpson murder trial. He was more full of it than a Christmas turkey (and he knew it), and the parrots on that pathetic jury recited his "something is wrong" mantra as he skewered the blood evidence.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, Lee was found liable for fabricating evidence in a Connecticut murder case in 2023 that resulted in the overturning of convictions of two men.

The man may well have been a solid forensic scientist, but he and Barry Scheck (of the not so pristine Innocence Project) worked on the verbiage for weeks to give the jury a bumper sticker the acquit a man both knew damn well killed two people.

I won't celebrate his passing, and he besmirched his reputation, but at one time he was an accomplished forensic scientist.

This one is sad.

You may not remember the name, but I'm sure most of you remember the guy disappearing for more than 24 hours just before Super Bowl 37. He was diagnosed with bipolar disorder. And sadly, it won't shock me if it is revealed in coming days it is a suicide.

He wasn't much of a pitcher. Only 36 starts, 111 appearances, and a 10-24 record with a monstrous 4.68 ERA. But he won two World Series rings in his first two seasons in the majors.

Ken Clay, who won World Series championships with the New York Yankees in 1977-78 to highlight his five-year major league career, has died at the age of 71.

Dr. Jim Warner, executive medical director for the Centra Heart & Vascular Institute in Lynchburg, Virginia, notified the Yankees on Sunday that Clay died Thursday at home in Lynchburg. Warner said Clay’s cause of death was heart and kidney issues.

A reliever for most of his career, Clay made his major league debut in June 1977 and appeared in two games in the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. In 1978, also against the Dodgers, he gave up a three-run homer to Davey Lopes in Game 1 in his only appearance.

His best postseason outing came in the opener of the 1978 American League Championship Series against Kansas City. The Yankees led 4-0 when Clay entered with one out and the bases loaded in the sixth inning. Clay pitched 3 2/3 scoreless innings and earned the save in a 7-1 win.

Don Schlitz, the architect behind many of country music’s most enduring songs, passed away on April 16 at a Nashville hospital after a sudden illness. He was 73.

As a writer of such country standards as “The Gambler,” “On the Other Hand,” “Forever and Ever, Amen,” “He Thinks He’ll Keep Her,” “The Greatest” and “When You Say Nothing At All,” Schlitz was a member of the Nashville Songwriter Hall of Fame, Songwriters Hall of Fame and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Born and raised in Durham, North Carolina, Schlitz briefly attended Duke University before moving to Nashville at age 20. Arriving with $80 in his pocket, he set to Music Row, and his talent was recognized and fostered early on by greats, including Bob McDill and Bobby Bare.

Schlitz became one of the first performers at the now-iconic Bluebird Café in Nashville. He and friends Thom Schuyler, J. Fred Knobloch and Paul Overstreet originated the Café’s songwriter-in-the-round format in 1985. On Tuesday nights, Schlitz held court at the venue with his “Don For A Dollar” show, charging a cover of $1 each night.

Schlitz’s first-ever cut was Kenny Rogers’ “The Gambler,” setting a incredible standard he would meet for the rest of his career. The then-23-year-old songwriter celebrated a massive crossover hit that traveled far and wide, winning a Grammy for Best Country Song in 1978, and the Country Music Association’s Song of the Year in 1979.

Following his first big hit, Schlitz continued to have stunning success. His 50 top 10 singles have played major roles in the careers of Rogers, Randy Travis, The Judds, The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Tanya Tucker, Mary Chapin Carpenter, Keith Whitley, Alison Krauss and many others.
