I wouldn't be surprised if the AAA affiliate eventually lands in Richmond. I believe the Braves are leaving due to antiquated stadium/facilities. Nats ownership has mentioned wanting to have their affiliates close to the parent company. As much money as they've spent on the scouting department and other minor league facilities, I could see them helping fund a new park in Richmond.

Re 2008 MLB Draft Live Update Threat (Hood and Ray)

Dont hold me to it but I seem to remember that Spencer Pennington was drafted in the 9th round and was offered 6 figure signing bonus and he turned it down. I always thought that was a mistake on his part.

Honestly, if he had done that for 2-3 years he could possibly be a walkon backup QB for us right now and certainly have the opportunity to receive better coaching and more physical development. I would probably prefer him in that role than McElroy or Fanuzzi right now.

If I had the opportunity to be a star at Alabama, I would take it. If I had a million dollars to spend, and you told me I could buy four years of stardom at Alabama, I would pay it. Life is not all about money, particularly when the money will probably be available down the line anyway. I would take my draft position to Lloyds and get an insurance policy. Then I would play football.
Second.

While I agree the chances of Hood coming to Bama are slim, there is still a chance.

According to this article the Hood's want to get paid like a first-rounder even if they did go mid-2nd. This could present a real problem for them as the Nats may not want to spend that much money up front on a player that is projected as a "end of the batting order" player in the majors.

Full Story

He wouldn't be the first player to think he's worth more than the team is willing to pay. If that happens, he'll quickly turn to Alabama and be a two-sport player.

How much is a full ride at Bama for say five years worth?

Plus, college experience, degree, baseball, and football?

I have heard that it might be 300,000 to 500,000 signing, and he has to pay for somethings when they travel in the minors. If it is double I think he is gone with the chance to always go back and get a degree and others have came back later to play football.
Roughly $120,000, considering he's in-state and increases tuition and other cost of living expenses. A degree increases his "value" outside of sports pretty significantly.

Congrats Destin and we all wish you the best.

Go Nationals! If he's going anywhere, my Nats are the way to go. They'll be an up and coming franchise in short order. New ball park. Minor league system quality/depth rated #30 a year ago and now rated #9. Deep pocketed owners. Big, wealthy market.
that's if Destin ever sees the inside of Nationals Park as a major leaguer. He always stands the very real chance of being offered up in a trade within the next 2-3 years. "We'll give you these 3 up and comers from our minor league system for your closer.........." type deal.

This was on Tidesports.com today. Hood will have a tough decision to make. $500k is going to be a lot less than he will be planning on.

"Hood was a wide receiver at St. Paul’s Episcopal School in Mobile during football season and was one of several Alabama football signees from the Mobile area. However, Hood has been considered a top baseball prospect through his career and told the Mobile Press-Register last week that he was “leaning” to a baseball career.

While signing bonuses varies widely from player to player, Baseball America reported that the Nationals paid last year’s No. 2 draft choice, pitcher Nick Hagadone, a signing bonus of $571,500."

Signing bonuses are determined by many, many factors...
If the Nats paid $500k for last year's #2 overall, that doesn't mean they will pay more or less this year for the #55 overall. For example, the #2 last year could have had NO ALTERNATIVE other than baseball(no FB offers, grades not good enough for D-1, so his only BB option would be JUCO, etc.) so they low-balled the bonus & he gladly accepted his $500k. Also, if he was in college, that could affect his bonus offer: Juniors drafted out of college tend to get more $$ than anyone because they are proven, yet can go back to college for 1 more year.

All this being said, the NATS are going to have to ante up if they want DH. He has options...very good options in terms of bonus $. I understand $500k is a lot of money, but if he feels like its not enough in the long run, or that he could get more $ from a different club, then he will probably wait, come to bama & take his chances.

IMO, he won't get the amount he is looking for, but he will go anyway. Dreams are dreams & injuries happen every minute of every day. MLB is where the long-term career is & $500k is a lot of money for that kind of shot.

It remains to be seen if Hood will get first round money or at least a million dollars as Hood's father said when asked what it would take to sign his son. So it is not exactly over yet but it certainly looks like the fat lady is getting ready to start singing 'Take me out to the ballpark.'

St. Paul's star and Alabama football commitment Destin Hood drafted in second round by Nationals
Hood, a University of Alabama football signee, said he feels confident he will sign with the Nationals as his advisor, Larry Reynolds of Reynolds Sports Management, has told him the team's offer should be "in the ballpark" of the first-round money he wants.

"This is just the beginning; I've got work to do," Hood said. "It's going to be a big step in my life and I'm ready to take it on."

Never seen the young man play either sport, but if he is as good at baseball as advertised and has the desire, I don't think there is any question he should take the money and see what he can do. He can always go to college later and a MLB team won't blink at guaranteeing him college money in his contract. I for one will wish him well and hope to see him in the big leagues. If he gets stuck in AA ball and cannot improve in a couple of years let him come to Alabama.... A half a million dollars for being able to sign your name plus salary plus a chance to play a game for a living is attractive enough that, faced with the real opportunity rather than just day dreaming about it, I'll bet nearly everyone on this board would do it (well, except HSV, but this thread doesn't apply to those who are already on lifestyles of the rich and famous).

Looks like Ray will be headed to campus unless he's got a grades issue. They're into Round 23 now and his name is yet to be called.

Melvin Ray picked at pick #997 by the Dodgers in the 33rd round...discuss.
It's simple, there is effectively no money whatsoever in where he was picked. Guys that late get a glorified version of a Big Mac combo. His signing bonus would be a few thousand dollars -- seriously, the kind of money that might get you a decent used car -- and then he'd be making the minor league minimums playing in the bus leagues.

He may go MLB, but if he does you can rest assured it is because he has serious academic problems with no legitimate chance of qualifying this year.

As long as he is okay academically, which is a big if, then it is just a certainty that he will be in Tuscaloosa.

Completely agree. He'd be shipped off to the Mexican league or traded for a new umbrella stand at that pick.

Of course, the Dodgers did select a guy named Piazza one time at pick 1,300+....

But his best chance is to come to Bama, play football and baseball and try the draft again in a few years or develop into an NFL prospect.

Well he should come to 'Bama, that's obvious, but again it's a question of academics.

If he cannot qualify academically, it's all a moot point. Many have speculated that is why he was in this thing to begin with -- I mean seriously, this is about where most people expected him to get picked anyway, so this is not a surprise in any way -- and I'm afraid that is indeed the case. I have a hard time believing he would stick around in the MLB Draft waiting to the the one thousandth player drafted instead of getting to T'town unless he really did not think he could qualify.

It's simple: If he can qualify, he'll be in Tuscaloosa... if he can't, he'll be playing in the bus leagues.
