Well Bama might be #2 in most class rankings for 2011, but I think this committ puts us firmly in the way too early lead for 2012. Welcome aboard Mr. Thomas.

Got a question for you guys. When this guy gets here how does the staff decide where he will play? Which unit does he start with? I always wondered how this happens.

Airborne, I really take what you and a few others say to the bank. I guess I just gotta break out the ole "I trust in Saban" line out when discussing Thomas' prospects as a QB in our offense. Don't get me wrong, he is a tremendous athlete, but let me offer one example of why I believe he ends up at WR or CB. In a game this year, I forget which, I watched him get chased out of the pocket toward the sideline. Upon reaching the sideline I believed he'd just go out of bounds or throw the ball away. Noooope. He literally slings the ball UNDERHANDED across his body toward one of his receivers that was covered. I bet everyone could guess what the end result was. He has consistantly made bad decisions all year.
Again, I want to say that Thomas is a gifted athlete. I just want him to get quality experience at DB before he gets here. Milliner really didn't get to play CB in HS and it showed early this year, and just look at the raw skills he has. There just is no substitue for experience.
With JT's build and speed you gotta think that CNS is salivating over his potential as a CB, so I was suprised to here he is getting a shot at QB. As for Meyer offering him at QB, well we know Meyer lies to recruits. However, I could see JT as a spread option style QB, just not a pro set guy.
Oh Well, regardless of what I think I fully trust this staff to put him in the best position to succeed. Its a great pickup regardless of position, and this kid has all the tools to excel.
I'm sure he'll get a look at QB but when he is faced with the choice of remaining at QB and possibly being 4th string or moving to CB or WR and possibly starting, seems like a no brainer to me.
Airborne (correct me if I'm wrong) is saying that he'll start at QB becuase that is his position of choice. However, just because he starts there, doesn't mean he'll be there for long at all. Saban told him that they'd start him wherever he wanted and then go from there. Therefore, he'll most likely end up just as Braveheart said... as a DB or WR... I'm guessing WR, but who knows. He can be a play maker on either side of the ball.
I will clarify. Saban promised Justin he will get a look at quarterback and he will. Do I think he stays there? No. Maybe in a Wildcat capacity but his future is most likely at WR or DB.
This would fit Saban's MO so far, he has been willing to give players looks at the position they want to play and only moves them when and if they are willing to change.
That is an approach that makes me respect Saban even more than I already do (if thats possible). There is just no substitute for being honest with these recruits and their families. I think JT would make an excellent Wildcat QB, I just think he is tailor made for CB and would like to see PHS use him there his senior year. However, he really is a playmaker when on the run. Wonder how he'd return kicks with all that speed?
Exactly. Also Justin is completely open to changing positions, he just wants his shot at QB. It's his lifelong dream to play QB for Alabama.
We all understand, don't we, that a big part of the Saban recruiting phenomenon is his ability to promise -- and come through on the promise -- that if a talented athlete will sign on with Bama, Saban will prepare him for the big bucks in the NFL within three or four years.
There is no way a 5' 10" guy plays QB in today's NFL. Those days went the way of the Passenger Pigeon with Eddie LeBaron. Oops -- forgot the little Boston College Heisman winner. Still, highly unlikely.
If this guy likes money, he will try his boyhood dream at QB, but at the end of the day he will find, with the coaching's staff's help, just where he excels the most, where he is likely to shine at the pro level.

I told LSU people then that this boded well for the future of the LSU program. It worked out that way. When that guy signed with LSU, it seemed to start an era that brought in two national championships.
Speed kills. Bodes well, no matter how you look at it.
