Numbers 1-8 are all easily defensible; they're all Hall of Famers, and some (Ruth, Gehrig, Mantle) are in the top five players of their position of all-time. Okay, Martin is NOT in the Hall, but he should be. Whitey, Reggie, Stengel, Rivera - all defensible.
Phil Rizzuto's was EXPLICITLY DONE to get him into the HOF. He has no business there. And eventually he got in in part because of that nonsense.
Munson's is defensible, too, especially with the circumstances of his death, the fact he was captain, and he WAS good catcher.
Posada? So awesome he didn't become the starting catcher until age 28. Seven of the most similar players to him are NOT in the Hall and one (Roy Campanella) had a shortened career on both ends (segregation on the front, the accident on the back).
Mattingly - a great player for four years who never won a World Series....playing for....the Yankees....
Elston Howard? Guilty white northerners want to honor the black dude (who was an average player)
Pettite? A joke.
Bernie Williams? An even bigger joke.
Maris? Get out of town.
