I'm not a musician. Can't even play chopsticks. But I've read that Wilson's songs for the Beach Boys songs are so advanced that most professionals can't play them correctly.
Come to think of it, kind of like Prince, I've rarely heard his songs covered by other artists. And never by local or regional bands.
Like many geniuses, his life had a tortured aspect. I hope he has now found rest and peace. One of the greats.

I remember being under 5 years old and playing my Dad’s Beach Boys 8-tracks in the living room.
They just sounded like Summer Fun.

I would never put myself in the genius category, but I can attest from personal experience that I was a much better musician when I was battling depression every day than I am now. And that depression drove me to practice - in part, it was therapeutic.
John Bettis, who co-wrote a lot of the hits by the Carpenters with his buddy (the brother, Richard), addressed the issues of the latter's pill popping abuse by observing that you have these young men (and Richard Carpenter - in his own way - is likewise a musical genius) that are 25 years old (Brian Wilson was 20 when the Beach Boys hit) and running multi-million dollar companies where you're only as good as your NEXT record. Bettis noted that it would probably be better for these guys if they just SLOWED DOWN and could focus their genius on the next project, but they can't - because (at least back then) the record company wouldn't let them. And they live under the pressure of, "I can't stop because we're on a roll and what if I can't get it going again?"
Brian Wilson was an absolute genius at music.

In 2016, Ralphs suffered a stroke after a series of Bad Company shows in the U.K. and was hospitalized; according to lead singer Paul Rodgers, who co-founded Bad Company with Ralphs in 1973, Ralphs had been in a nursing home in recent years.
