Bobby Sherman, the blue-eyed, chestnut-haired pop singer, TV actor and teen idol of the 1960s, has died, his wife wrote Tuesday on Instagram. He was 81.

“It is with the heaviest heart that I share the passing of my beloved husband, Bobby Sherman,” wrote Brigette Poublon Sherman. “Bobby left this world holding my hand—just as he held up our life with love, courage, and unwavering grace through all 29 beautiful years of marriage. I was his Cinderella, and he was my prince charming. Even in his final days, he stayed strong for me. That’s who Bobby was — brave, gentle, and full of light.”

My family lived in Baton Rouge in 1987-1988. I attended an Assembly of God private school and most of the teachers' husbands were in his seminary. When school started the fall after he got caught ALL of those teachers were gone.
I felt empathy for the fact any human being can fail at any time and probably will.

Until I learned about his own brazenness in destroying Marvin Gorman for the same thing and being involved in the exposure of Jim Bakker, whom he thought was a closeted gay man, and just his (and his wife's) vicious treatment of anyone they saw as a rival.

Particularly when I learned that his indiscretion had been uncovered in October 1987, and he only came out with his theatrical apology AFTER the national denomination learned of it - and they only learned of it because Swaggart had reneged on a promise to come clean earlier multiple times.

Yeah, the man is dead, but he should have listened to more of what he preached, too.

He could sure play the piano and sing gospel music!!! I believe Jerry Lee Lewis was his cousin...

OTOH, he was a megamillionaire, owning highly priced property in New Orleans and around South Louisiana.

Right about now, I would think Jimmy is engaged in a highly uncomfortable conversation. The conversation might be over…I don’t know.

Regardless, I can’t imagine God would be too happy with a man who profaned His name for his own selfish interest — financial, sexual, positional power, whatever.

And who came only partially clean, and then only when cornered like a sewer rat.

To paraphrase Desi Arnaz, “Jimmmmeeeee…..you got some ‘splainin’ to dooooo….”

My uncle liked Jimmy Swaggart before he got caught with the prostitutes but I'm not sure what he thought of him afterwards. His SonLife Broadcasting Network is on my cable system so I saw him on there. He lived a lavish lifestyle with a mansion, a private jet and luxury cars at the expense of his followers, although he wasn't the only TV preacher doing that. His son Donnie takes over the empire now. The thing I don't like about Donnie is how he sometimes treats the viewers when they have a Share-A-Thon and the viewers are not donating as much as Donnie thinks they should. He starts scolding them a bit and tries to make them feel guilty for not giving more.

Also, I'm glad Selma mentioned the Marvin Gorman angle. Nobody every brings that up, but there was a whole heck of a lot of skeezy stuff going on in this situation.
Most folks really didn't know the details, the only reason so many people remember this particular scandal is because of the theatrics involved in his Sunday morning "repentance" viewed by millions (and then seen by millions more on TV).

I'm wondering if the Swaggart scandal deserves its own thread on NS........(I don't think it would be the most appropriate on this one to cover, and it's pretty wild).
