Lenny Wilkens, one of five people inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame as a player and coach, and an ambassador of Seattle basketball for more than 50 years, died at his home Sunday.

The 88-year-old Wilkens grew up in Brooklyn, played in St. Louis, Cleveland and Portland as part of his career on the court, and coached six different franchises during 32 seasons on the sidelines.

Former Laney College football coach and current athletic director John Beam has died after being shot on the school's Oakland campus.

Former Laney College football coach and current athletic director John Beam died Friday a day after being shot on the school's Oakland campus, police said.

Beam, a beloved Oakland football icon who was featured in the Netflix series “Last Chance U," was shot late Thursday morning at the Laney College Fieldhouse, according to the Peralta Community College District. He was rushed to a local hospital and listed in critical condition. He died at about 10 a.m. Friday, according to police.

"We are devastated that John Beam, our loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, coach, mentor, and friend, has passed," Beam's family said in a statement read by police during a Friday afternoon news conference. "Our hearts are full from the outpouring of love and support from all who cared about him. We are deeply grateful for your continued prayers, well wishes and thoughts. At this time, we kindly ask everyone to fully respect our family's privacy."

Beam left his mark on young people on and off the field at Laney College and before that at Skyline High School, also in Oakland.

He joined Laney in 2004 as a running backs coach and became head coach in 2012, winning two league titles. According to his biography on the college’s website, 20 of his players have gone on to the NFL.

Two of Beam’s former players — brothers Nahshon and Rejzohn Wright, now in the NFL with the Chicago Bears and New Orleans Saints — posted on social media after the shooting.

The Netflix "Last Chance U" docuseries focused on athletes at junior colleges striving to turn their lives around, and Beam’s Laney College Eagles starred in the 2020 season.

Todd Snider died this week.

I'm guessing lots of people don't know who he is, but he was an amazing musician who had an incredible, lasting impact on the alt-country and americana music community. In some ways he was a visionary, a pioneer.

He recorded his 'Viva Satellite' album while I worked at Ardent and while I didn't work on this record, his presence and artistry left in indelible impact on me. He was one of the truly esoteric artists I've had the pleasure to be around, to absorb. I've posted music off this album many time as it's had a long-lasting impact on me.

Kudos to producer and engineer "mister midrange" John Hampton and mixer Michael Barbiero for an amazing album, masterfully mastered by the inimitable George Marino. Also kudos to my countless Memphis friends who played a part in making this amazing album.

Truly a tour de force of an album by an incredible artist.

Jimmy Cliff, the two-time Grammy-winning Jamaican musician and reggae legend, has died. He was 81.

Cliff’s wife, Latifa Chambers, announced his death in a statement on his Instagram page Monday.

“It’s with profound sadness that I share that my husband, Jimmy Cliff, has crossed over due to a seizure followed by pneumonia,” Chambers wrote.

Viola Ford Fletcher, also known as Mother Fletcher, was the last known living survivor of the Tulsa Race Massacre. She was born on May 10, 1914, in Comanche, Oklahoma, and was seven years old when the massacre began.
