Link: 2026 Transfer Portal

I spent lot of time-sharing relevant news affecting Alabama roster on here and other board not because you guys get lost in long discussions about NIL, past players and CKD's performance on the field. (Yeah, I threw a little shade... Just kidding!!!!) It's because you guys are amazing on this board and y'all come through with information on lot of things, and I've learned a lot from each one of you. I'm just happy I was able to contribute to this board in a small way, just to show y'all some love.

Today is the last day to enter the portal. Alabama still has few visitors on the campus for today throughout the weekend. I think we will see more visitors popping up over the weekend. I'm hoping we will see commitment from at least 2 players over the weekend. That alone will be enough for me to be comfortable going forward. I prefer one of the commitments to be OL.

In the other news:
Miami- they're struggling to find the QB for next year. I wouldn't be shocked if they can coax a QB to enter the portal today and visit them. I don't see them doing that.

Kentucky is a team to watch for next year: They're going to be scary team next year.
Texas- They went overboard , roster is loaded everywhere, but I got a bad feeling that it'll backfire on them in a big way.
LSU- Kiffin better win it all next year otherwise all of the players he poached, will enter in the portal similar to Texas A and M mess from few years ago.

You know who we haven't heard much during this portal? Arkansas, Florida and Vandy.

Credit where credit is due ... You've said to be patient and hold off judgment, and you've proven correct so far. I'm still hoping we'll see some changes on the developmental (i.e. coaching) side, but props to you so far.
I'm very appreciative of that sir.
You can judge the team after this weekend :)

Coaching staff movements: I'm pretty sure there will be movements, and I think we'll hear something within few days. I think @sanjosecrimson mentioned that.

There's not much that would please me more than seeing these two programs both implode and explode, if there's any way that's possible.

Guess where we play Week 2?

Glad they didn't land Levitt, but could still be an early test, especially in light of the FSU PTSD

Texas clearly thinking this is the last year with Manning and it's now or never so they are going all in to sign talent. It reminds me of that guy who used to own the late Washington Redskins. He went out several times and bought up all the talent in the league trying to build a superteam, it never worked. There were too many variables to predict how a player in one system would translate to another. Plus they weren't really a team but rather a collection of individuals. In the end his experiments always fell short.

Florida and Arkansas both have higher rated portal classes than Bama per 247Sports.

All three have a higher rated class than Bama per On3.

Here is the current 2026 College Football Team Transfer Portal Rankings, per on3:

Is there another/better source for the rankings?

Question about the 24/7 and On3 portal rankings; are they just looking at “players in/players out” without regard to any true program need evaluation/assessment?

For example if you have a receiver room that is eight deep with significant skill and you bring in another high priced guy, is it really improving your overall position outside of depth?

The last time I checked, there is only one football on the field at any given time.

And IF these services are using a need based approach, then I can see some validity to the rankings.

These rankings....my guess anyway.....are going strictly on their star ratings. If I go out and get twenty 5 star fullbacks, I'd be rated #1. I don't think they care about how a team is filling a roster. Its all about those stars for these services.

I felt especially this year that talent wasn't the biggest issue but coaching.
Yes and no, IMO.

TALENT
The Hoosiers appear to have leap-frogged Kiffin and Kentucky in the "How to best use the portal" challenge. And it seems to me, CKD paid attention.

A team of proven solid performers seems to out-do the Kiffin approach of getting one or two superstars in each player group (RB, OL, DL, DB, etc.) and hoping the rest of that room holds-up their end.

[If only we had enough solid Tight Ends, though...!]

I am more concerned about getting better staff in here, particularity the OLine and offense.
COACHING
Once the lineup of players is well-established (I fervently pray) coaching changes will be made at Alabama. Offensive Line ... Strength & Conditioning ... Offensive Coordinator ... Running Backs ... Special Teams ... is my preference in order of importance.

Disclaimer: I am not even as qualified as 80% of the TideFans members to be the Performance Consultant for Alabama (or even the Albany State Great Danes).

Just like HS recruiting rankings, how good or bad the class is can't be determined until they start playing. As one of our staff members told a group of boosters last year, you can miss on players in the portal either by not getting who you want or the players you do get don't pan out. No one will know how good their portal was until the season starts.

Of note between On3 and 247 rankings....

On3 includes Ethan Stangle for us, the new Long Snapper........we are 50th in their rankings.

247 does not include him.....we are 34th in their rankings.

247 has LSU #1
On3 has LSU #20

Its all over the place.

Those rankings are about as credible as me making up in my head what I think the winning powerball numbers are going to be. Those services are trying to stay relevant in order to make money, but in reality, they don't mean a hill of beans. HS recruiting rankings and portal rankings are worthless.

I don't think they have a very organized system for ranking transfers. The sites tend to try to re-rank them but I'm not sure how adequate that is, and then there's how to weight it properly. They've never had to really consider the value of incoming vs. outgoing for instance, no recruiting class ranking ever needed to show that, but that's another new thing as well that needs to be considered.

Then there's ranked vs. unranked and walk-on vs. scholarship, for instance one tight end Alabama picked up isn't showing anywhere as far as I can tell and that's how it usually how it is since he's neither ranked nor on scholarship (they never tend to list walk-ons). I think that gets fuzzier with special teams, as it's not always readily apparent who is and isn't on scholarship.

Clearly all this is a work in progress, as has been noted Indiana's class despite 23 players, while Alabama had about half that many that last year, was still ranked lower (on 247). This despite picking up the future Heisman winner and allegedly still being a bit more expensive than Alabama's class. We know which was better, it darn sure wasn't the higher ranked class.

Having said that there is a ballpark figure value to these rankings. You can follow the trends and the like. For instance in Alabama's case I think you can see there's a lot more out than in, that's something I think most of us hope gets resolved before it's all said and done. Also, they can get their rankings wrong but they are generally based on who is perceived as being the most desirable in the portal.

I tend to think this is a more accurate way of evaluating things. Texas is lower than on 247 because while they added a lot, what they lost was substantial as well. Alabama's lower ranking reflects that as well, lost 23, added 11, but if Alabama just adds more they should move up.

On3's system also holds up better if you check on Indiana and Alabama from last year. We know Indiana's portal class was great and Alabama's wasn't, they had Indiana at 13 and Alabama at 61 which both seems more accurate and indicates this portal class might already be a bit better than last years.
