Link: 2026 Transfer Portal

I find it interesting that T.J. Dottery at Ole Miss hit the portal among some rumored conflict concerning current players in the program being upset with some of contracts being offered to incoming transfers. Supposedly some of those numbers were leaked and many of the ones that have chosen to stay aren’t happy with this disparity.

If true, I think many of us here wouldn’t be surprised by it..

I've been turning over in my head how to try to handle both the portal and recruiting and how to balance that. At one point I thought it would be important to stash some in-state 3 star type kids as developmental projects on the roster, but I'm not sure that's necessary.

The state of Alabama will have four non-power conference FBS teams. UAB, Troy, South Alabama and Jacksonville State. That's way too many, but it could be used to Alabama's advantage. If Alabama can develop good relationships with those staffs, things can go from an antagonistic, tampering type situation to more of a minor league structure.

In the minor leagues, despite a team losing one of their best players, elevation to the big leagues is celebrated. This is because the minor league team is a part of the process. If Alabama could start cooperating and sharing information with programs such as those, they could actually start steering raw talent in need of development/playing time towards those teams. Likewise, once they get ready to hit the portal, they could be steered to Alabama. It could go the other way, for instance Roq went to Western Kentucky, if Alabama took guys like that and instead of pushing them out and said there's a chance for you to play right away here, it changes the dynamic a bit.

Of course rules have to be followed and what not, but cooperation with other staffs would make the entire process so much less messy and it's a strategy I've employed in competitive video games with guilds. I would have allied guilds, I'd have places I sent people that were not quite up to par, and other places I would add people from that were, all maintaining good relationships. The truth is I was the one benefiting the most, but people appreciated it far more when I included them in the process. While it's not the same, I did employ it to reach the top in a game with something like 100,000 players so it's not entirely dissimilar.

Florida and Arkansas both have higher rated portal classes than Bama per 247Sports.

All three have a higher rated class than Bama per On3.
Frankly, ratings are all a bunch of garbage. These recruiting services can't keep up with the prep players much less portaleers who have been playing college ball for a while. I like where we are in high school recruiting and also what we are doing in the portal. Don't really want to make a bunch of noise this cycle in the portal as long as we fill needs with good, serviceable players in need positions.

I have thought this same thing and love this idea. The problem is getting the other teams to buy in to this approach. Seems nearly impossible.

I hate to bring of IU again, but they prove it's "who you need/who fits your system" more than what these classes are being graded on.

We might have a rank of 10-12 or even last in the conference, but if we fill the right slots of need, it's the #1 class for us!!!
Right, this is a team sport. Don't need superstars all over the field but you do need 22 guys playing on the same page giving their all 100% of the time. Sprinkle in some supremely talented guys in key positions and you are cooking. But you have to play as a team, one cohesive unit. That is what IOU has this year.

I think the perception is every time we miss on an offer it means we won't have as good of a portal class.

It could mean that sometimes, but there might be 5 other guys that fill the same need too and the one we offered first didn't work out. The next guy might accept, and because this is an imperfect science, the second or third guy might turn out better for us.

We miss because we are outbid or we tell the guy the truth. I can live with that.
