It's got to be a little of both, I think.

I hope eventually we figure out the NIL payment scheme and maybe some of the new stuff coming down will help equal the recruiting game.

But to have a great team that contends you have to have A STUD, typically. Still might not win it all, just like Duke didn't, but they had the POTY and a great supporting cast, which I think is an ideal formula.

Mark becoming a star was really gravy. We never expected that when he came in as a transfer. Same with Herb a few years before. Yeah, you will occasionally get lucky and have that guy become 'THE GUY but it's pretty rare.

But, I think to play for the top prize regularly we need to land a top player almost every year.

Yeah, you can put together a team of low profile guys (3 and 4 star guys that are really good college players), but who's going to be the "go to guy?"

We've got to be able to recruit the bona fide star for those moments. Brandon Miller was that guy. To a lesser extent, Colin Sexton was.

I think that's the recipe. A star surrounded by a great supporting cast!

It's why I was so diappointed we missed last year on A.J. Dybantsa. I think he's ours without BYU $$$.

I think Bethea has the potential to be a star. This kid was the 7th ranked prospect in 2024.

He sounds like a great addition. Like his size for a guard.

The type of "go to player" I have in mind, especially for CNO's system, is a player more like Brandon Miller.

In CNO's system, guards will be stars, but I think we need those long, lanky forwards who are "positionless" in that they could play inside and out. BM could move from point to power forward and everything in between. I think I've heard these guys referred to as "point forwards" recently, which is a new, but great description.

I know those guys don't grow on trees, but when we get the right mix of guards, players like that, and the right 5s (which I believe we have on this team), we are going to be lights out.

Larry Bird was called a point forward back in the day.

Age...I watched every Lakers and Celtics game in the 80's so I guess I've heard the phrase and just forgot.

Ironically, Bird and Magic were exactly those kind of players. I loved the Lakers and Showtime, but I don't know if there's ever been a more complete, fundamental player that ever graced the hardwood than Larry Bird. The Hick from French Lick was simply amazing.

I swear I’m not chicken little’ing but am I the only one who’s a little uneasy about having exactly 1 true pg on this team? I know we play positionless and I know herb used to bring it up but….i dunno seems precarious. That being said I know oats has forgotten more than I’ll ever know about basketball and also probably math

I aint worried about it. If the ball is in the hands of the PG more than 5s we ain't running Oats offense...
