There's another PG.

I'm not sure how viable he would be if we got down to him on the DC, but I guess it's another safety valve.
Alabama Basketball Adds Preston Murphy Jr.

Alabama men's basketball updated its roster and it included Northern Oklahoma College transfer guard Preston Murphy Jr.

Murphy Jr. is the son of Alabama's top assistant coach and recruiter Preston Murphy. The 6-foot-1 guard will be a junior and walk-on with the Crimson Tide.

Murphy Jr. averaged 14.4 points on 42 percent from the field, including 34 percent from downtown, along with 4.1 assists and 3.4 rebounds per game in his one season at Northern Oklahoma College last year after starting in 25 games. He scored double-figures in 21 of the 28 games Murphy played throughout the season, including a career-high 31 points on Nov. 12, 2024 at Independence Community College.

Was going to start a thread on this but then didn’t think it was worth it. I think for the first time ever I am more excited for the basketball season than football. This due to all the changes the last 5 or so years. Wondering if it’s like that with anyone else?

I am a certified football junkie, but I have certainly been more excited about b'ball than f'ball for the past 2 or 3 years. If I was to be honest with myself, I got down on football for probably the same reasons you stated, plus our recent QB situation.

I do think we are in for an exciting basketball season, and I really am pumped. I think we have assembled a group of guys with a lot of potential.

Having said that, I am also pumped about the football team this year for some of the same reasons.

Roll Tide! :)

I understand both of you and are there myself too. In listening to a caller to our local radio station talking about it yesterday, I thought about the fact that some of our excitement likely has to do with the fact that Bama is still climbing the NCAA mountain in basketball... whereas we've climbed the football mountain in years past. I've been a fan of Alabama since the 1980's and I can tell you I was the most excited when Nick Saban came in and starting building teams early in his tenure. At some point, that excitement level began to drop... I started paying less and less attention to recruiting and assumed we would always have a top flight program.

Also, with basketball, I think there's an added element of interest in the roster construction. When you talk about putting together a football team, there's a LOT of pieces that have to be added and one guy often doesn't move the needle much. With basketball, however, the addition of one piece is often far more important and can indeed move the needle a LOT - as Philon's return proves. It's easier to see the roster construction in BB rather than FB... and I think that brings some intrigue to us fans.

Looks like we're not done, after all. This is an interesting pickup.

Finally! ...

I took one look at his photo posted above - just a glance at his upper torso - and I thought, "finally, someone that won't be pushed around under the basket".

Then I click on the article to find he is 6' 10" and weighs 270 lbs.

We had Big O last season. This season Bigger O. .:D

@BAMARICH, I really like your last paragraph, and your point on roster construction and moving the needle.

Basketball roster is easier for me to get to know. Maybe because they are not hiding under a helmet. Or maybe - to your point - there are less pieces to keep up with. Whatever it is, I feel like I get to know the guys, and their personalities, better.

I love how CNO seems to always be learning/tinkering with roster construction.

I think he's seen us be overwhelmed with bigger teams in the paint, especially deep into March/April and he's just taking another step to constructing a NC type roster.

I think this is a move for a more traditional type center. Just a huge, big, strong presence for the lane. He may develop into a more diverse 5 for our roster, but right now, this is about brute strength, defense and rebounding.

Here's a recruiting report I found on 247:

Adam Finkelstein
Director of Scouting
Onyejiaka is a major physical presence in the lane. He's long, strong, aggressive, and just physically dominant inside the lane, primarily as a finisher, rebounder, post defender, and rim protector. He's close to maxed out physically though and needs to continue to polish his game. He misses a surprising amount of dunks for someone so physically dominant, isn't much of a scoring threat on the perimeter, and can lack solutions when not able to overpower the opposition.
