A new era begins: Bama thinks DeBoer is ‘DeBest’ choice to succeed Saban
by Jess Nicholas, TideFans.com Editor-In-Chief

The plane touched down about 8:30 p.m. in Tuscaloosa and Kalen DeBoer, most recently the head coach at the University of Washington, stepped onto the tarmac with his family and (we assume former) Washington football GM Courtney Morgan. Seventeen years after a similar, organic greeting from fans ushered in the Nick Saban era, another ad hoc collection of supporters arrived at Tuscaloosa National Airport to give Kalen DeBoer a taste of what awaits him the other 364 days of the year.

Another good piece, Jess. Clicked through all three links, too.

DeBoer's offensive scheme is TOAST without great pass protection from the OL. I'll be very interested to see how our OL is addressed for 2024.

This is going to be the big question for sure. When he first got to UW, he found the OL to be almost too bulky and certainly not quick enough. Our last 12 months has been spent turning our OL into buffaloes.

Guys like James Brockermeyer have to be turning cartwheels over the change. Our slimmer OL, like Roberts and Pritchett, have a great opportunity in front of them.

The unknowns right now are whether his kind of offense can excel in the SEC where there are stronger defenses than in the PAC 12, and what kind of defensive staff he puts together here. If he brings his current defensive staff I'd have to be concerned because his defenses have underperformed to put it mildly. We know what happened when Lincoln Riley took his Oklahoma DC along to USC.

Personally I preferred a HC coach with with defensive background but few were in the mix (except perhaps Lanning) so I guess DeBoer was the best of the remaining coaches on the list. A totally new brand of football coming to Tuscaloosa next season so like everyone else I'm hoping for the best.

The defensive philosophy worries me most. The things I have always believed true is that if the defense is good enough to keep any deficit under 10 pts, and you are very good at stopping the run and pressuring the QB, you have a very good chance to win against anyone you play.

Saban's defenses evolved quite bit during his tenure but he always tried to make it difficult to move the ball on the ground. Especially in the 2nd half.

This offense will be QB centric. The right guy will excel! Anybody seen how quick of a release Sayin has???

In the future, I think QB's will line up to want to play here. Penix threw for almost 5K yards this year. Imagine the talent CKD can get in QBs and WRs!

Of course CKD knows the OL is a key piece. I think the changes for the better will happen quickly.

I know you know your football, but defensive that hold teams under 10 points are like dinosaurs today.

We'll probably go back to averaging 45 points a game. That'll cover for a defense that could give up more points.

CKD will figure out the defensive side for SEC play. He seems too smart not too.

I meant that as holding any deficit to under 10 points, not total points scored. I agree that we need to be more prolific on offense because the game has changed a lot over the last 10-15 years. But the team that runs the ball well and can stop the other guys from running the ball is a perennial winner. Even today.

I like this quote (it’s very telling that the “King of Defense” acknowledged this as truth, with regard to the current state of college football):

“In the end, the selection of Kalen DeBoer is a sound one at worst, and a potentially breakthrough hire on the top end. Nick Saban himself has said that college football was once dominated by great defensive teams, but is now controlled by top offensive teams. In Kalen DeBoer, Alabama has hired one of the leaders in offensive innovation.”

All I know is he’s a winner and talked about being physical. He also is a culture builder and loves his teams. We may never win a title under him but I’m betting we do.

That was the case the last 3 seasons. The team that won the National Championship played very good defense, nothing real fancy on offense but avoided turnovers.

Should always be difficult to move the ball on the ground, but the problem with the less than 10-point spread is that one bad play can cost you the ball game. Please, let's score enough points that we do not have to sweat through many of those. The obvious examples of this are the Michigan game this year and the LSU and Tennessee games last year.

Well, he did beat Lanning defense twice with a lesser talented team. 🤷
