Question: A Passing Plan: What Do Coker/Kiffin Need To Do To Have Success Passing Against UF?

I've seen some say OJ does just enough on chip and seal blocks. He blocks like a WR but catches the ball like a OL.
OJ is a big receiver. Weird. Stewart is a really good run blocker on the edge but you've seen his hands be super iffy. OJ, on the other hand, has really really good hands. Sucks that we don't use him more.

So here's my #tbt post:

"Throw it to the tight end!!!"

We'll open up passing with those quick outs and WR screens trying to spread the defense out and then ram DH up the gut. That seems to be our game plan against a lot of defenses.

Florida State had no issue running and passing on them. I honestly don't see what the big deal is to UF's defense. Could be they got tired from their offense being off the field but I doubt that. UF had 32 min of ball possession while FSU had less. If we can't beat them (and handily really), do we deserve to be in the playoffs? :rolleye2:

Yah, the 2 games I watched them in were FSU and LSU and both made them look average. Those stats don't lie though...but they were also playing in a weak East division. I think the most impressive thing they did this season was get past Ole Miss. That was a true combo effort with Grier and the Defense though.

I still think it's all about sucking those LB's further down into the box and getting our WR's and tight ends in the gap. I don't like the perimeter play style against this defense. I think it's alternating stretch and compress. I don't think they'll play a safety deep because they like the matchup of their corners on our WR's.

You need to go back and look at that game. Cook had no success other than a single run of about 20 yards in the first half. He and the entire FSU offense were shut down. Cook didn't have success running the ball until very late in the game.

I don't disagree but why was the score 27-2? Bama should win going away else we definitely don't belong in playoffs or heck even a BCS Bowl game. And I'm not even worried about it. I still think Florida should be easier for us to beat than Auburn.

To me, that illustrates they can be worn down. No team does that better than Alabama. Henry typically doesn't have a huge 1st quarter (though he occasionally will, like in the Texas A&M game) so that late game gouging is just the weakness Alabama is poised to exploit. At least running wise....That's provided that our own team isn't gassed after plowing through AU late in that game.

To move that idea back on topic, they'll be expecting a heavy dose of Henry late in the game...which provides opportunities for Coker and his clan as well. Though like we saw with AU and LSU, it doesn't always matter if you know what's coming if you can't stop it.

Well... this I can confirm: Expect a screen pass throughout the game. Be on the look out for jet sweep to Ridley and Stewart. I expect two over thrown play action to Ridley. I expect Stewart to drop a pass or two.

I also expect Stewart or Ridley to come up with a huge play to put point on the board.

Seriously, With the defense we're facing this Saturday, I would imgaine that coaches looked at the tapes of FSU and LSU and figure out what worked and what didn't work. I expect us to come in a game plan where we'll be throwing early on to loose up the defense for Henry to pound ball in. I would say I expect Howard and Mullaney to have a big game, but those two have been missing lately... Do you think Defense will focus more on Stewart and Ridley?

Lot of people dont have faith in Coker... but the thing is Coker could have a big game. We all saw what coker can do when OL buys him time... he makes plays...

Agreed, just as any team can be. But also keep in mind that the score was still 13-2 when Florida punted with about 7 minutes to go in the game. At that point everyone knew that the game was over. So, from my point of view, the stats that FSU racked up after that mean less than if the Gators were still in the game.

My impression of this Gators team - you can make them quit, but you have to do it mentally. You take this team out of the game by taking away their spirit, not by grinding them out.

(Sigh) I don't want to bad mouth the guy but I can't help but cringe anytime I see that he is being targeted. He's usually open and has elite speed and is great after the catch, but those hands...Lord help me.

I actually think you bring up a good point that they will probably try and neutralize those 2 specifically since they are our deep threats which could create opportunities for Mullaney and Howard. Howard gets downfield quicker than anyone thinks he can. I'm sure they want to keep everything in front of them so over-suppressing those WR's may benefit the other cast members of the receiving corps. I've said before that Coker is great if he has time and the receivers catch the catchable balls he gives them. Very accurate, very athletic and usually good anticipation if he has the time. He can't stare down his receivers though or Hargreaves and the other corner will eat him for lunch.

That's a good thought. That was really the impetus of this posting. Sure, everyone knows our Tractor is going to get carries. To really demoralize them I think we need success in the passing game. Their bread and butter. That's where they are probably most confident - in their secondary. If Bama can needle and pick that apart they'd have to wonder about their identity. If you can't stop an attack on what you do best, what else is there?

Stewart catches more than he drops. He and Ridley will be special next season if the QB situation is good. Yes I know we want them to be special right now (and need it to some extent). I'm just saying we're set up very nicely for the future.

I forgot Drake may play in the game.... Drake could be the x factor... If he can carry the ball. I'm hoping once he catch the ball, go down fast, so he wont fumble. :)

it seems that our passing plan under kiffin is to stretch the D wide rather than deep so as to open gaps at the LOS rather than to create gaps in the zones downfield.

it's work fairly well all season, so I don't see why we'd change it now.

He is good but Dalvin Cook is not Derrick Henry. Can our line make it work? Can Coker hit the seams?
I think so and I think our defense scores too. It's gonna be fun!

Oh yah, he was trending up. I'm sure Florida hasn't forgotten what he did to them on the first play of last year's game!
I'd love to see him motion out wide on the first play to turn their pants brown and then take it the other way.

I didn't mean to run down Stewart. He really is a talent and we have a good receiving corps. They are just a little young. They are good enough to get the job done, however. Big test for them this game though. I'm sure Hargreaves feels good about this matchup and will want to prove a point after last years game. Curious to see who and where he lines up.
