a question about speed of the game and the freshmen so far

How difficult is it for a receiver out of highschool and running back to adjust to the speed of div. 1 football? It seems on the surface that julio is having a slight problem adjusting to the speed of the game, whereas Ingram is doing great. I was curious if it is more difficult for a receiver. Don't get me wrong Julio is a stud, but he is a freshman. I predict, before the end of the season, Julio will be probably the best new receiver statistically in the SEC. Ingram, is already on track to being the best running back. It would be in my mind easier for a running backs to adjust. Am I wrong?

Re: a question about speed of the game and the freshman so far

I would think it would not be so bad with a receiver of Julio's caliber. Remember that he played in a few all star games and has burned a few of our DB's in practice. And a lot of the time, though it's a one on one situation where Julio will not be as dominant over the DB as in HS, he should still be capable of winning most match ups with the SEC DB's, even as a true freshman. That is why he was the consensus #1 receiver.

IMO the problems lies with getting him catchable balls. I can't understand why we are not lobbing passes where he can out jump his match up. especially in the red zone.

There is an adjustment period for any player, and more so for some positions over others. But I believe Julio is beyond adjusting to the speed, it's just a matter of getting him the ball.

Sure others with more knowledge will opine.

I dont think the speed of the defenders is a problem with Julio. Jones has the ability to get open deep.....and has been open deep. Wilson just cant throw the deep ball....he never could. The balls are always overthrown...he has no touch on his deep passes.

I hate to start looking at next year already....but next year we will truly see Julio's talent....when we have a QB that can get the ball to him. I wouldn't mind seeing one of the QB's come off of the bench...just to throw deep balls. Just like the defense has a nickel or dime package for long yardage situations. The offense needs to bring in a long yardage QB...for certain plays that require passes down field.

The only better long-ball arm we have is the transfer, who doesn't have the knowledge of the offense that JPW does. Of the backups, Mac has the best grasp of the offense, but his arm is no better than Wilson's. And you don't want to send in a QB which is a signal to the other team that you're going to deep (unless you use it as a decoy). I guess it comes down to what CNS has said - Wilson's our best chance at winning. He's never in the past been hesitant about playing two QBs. With JJ, it's more learning to run precision routes than pure speed. If a receiver cuts his route off a couple of yards short, and the QB throws to the proper spot, the ball is going to sail over the head of the receiver - no matter how good of a jumper he is...

I just haven't seen that speed. I can see some minor route running problems, and jpw isn't really on sync with any of his recievers, but nick walker the tight end. Also, julio atleast on one play that i noticed, just didn't adjust to the ball that well. He is a freshman. He is really, really good right now, but he will get even better. now that is scary at least for other sec teams.

He was a walk-on but left a scholarship at I believe Boston College to come here. He was given a bad rap from the beggining at his prior college because the fans didn't believe the coach was recruiting the type of QB they were accustomed to. He was maybe a two to three star QB out of Georgia I believe.
I thought Ross Applegate was the transfer from BC?
Why does that name keep popping into my head?

different players are going to react differently in certain situations. thats human nature. I too am under the impression that Jones isnt up to spd right now. Ingram may be better under pressure, more mentally prepared right now than Jones.

If interviews say anything about a person then Mark Ingram is the most mature recruit out of the 08 class. If anyone saw his announcement speech to commit to Bama and any interview since then you'll notice real quick he is VERY VERY well spoken, VERY comfortable in front of a camera and seems to be mature beyond his years.

Not saying coach plays favorites, but I bet you Ingram is one of his favorites due to coaching his dad, his relationship with his mother, and knowing what Mark has had to endure emotionally growing up.

We could always do what CSS did to us. The staring QB (Doug Johnson?) came out due to "injury". Jessie Palmer came in a threw a bomb.

Arm strength isn't the issue, JPW has enough arm strength to overthrow our receivers. Touch is the problem, Stabler is a classic example, he had a strong arm, not a cannon, but he had fantastic touch on the deep ball. I don't think it's a coachable skill either. Just my guess, but I believe it depends on a QB's ability to stay cool under the pressure and play within himself instead of just heaving it for all he's worth, which would explain Stabler because he was a cold blooded assassin in crunch time.

There is no question that JPW struggles with certain deep ball passes, but the one pass that he has been criticized the most this year happened early in the 1st quarter when he overthrew JJ against Tulane. What most casual observers failed to pick up on was, he was been chased out of the pocket by 2 defenders throwing against his body. The announcers even made the comment that 9 out of 10 QB's would not have completed that pass. JPW has faults but he plays his heart out each week.
