This is what has to change. The University has got to be able to be approved by the NCAA OR whoever is running college football that the Universities get to decide "how much" the "students" actually ( ;) ) get. Then the coaching staff can get involved and the read stars should be the ones who actually get paid. Right now it's "paid to play" and it should be "play to paid."
I don't see how that's possible considering the SCOTUS ruling - that would be like your employer taking ALL your income, regardless of source, and dividing it among those they wish to.

NIL money is - by default - outside the perview of the university. If that weren't the case NIL wouldn't really exist.

Now when/if the universities begin sharing proceeds from the media rights then they'll have some control over who gets what and when. But while I'm not a lawyer, I cannot see any way the university (or any other governing body) could essentially tell a player how much they can make and when they can recieve the moneyt for the useage of their name, image, and likeness.

Well, I still have hope in the sport. Things have a way of leveling themselves out over the long haul. One NIL deal could have really made a difference for Tyrone Prothro. But players will never run teams, good coaches do. So the Billionaire built teams won't necessary bring home championships IMHO.

If these NIL deals are truly from sources outside the control of the university then the coaches are going to have to come to a point where they don't give a crap about a player's NIL $$$. The team comes first and if a player isn't performing up to par then the next man up gets his shot. This "holding the coach hostage" junk is ridiculous, if that is actually what's going on.

Exactly.

I've not heard a peep about this being an issue at Bama, so I'm not suggesting this is happening in Tuscaloosa. But it will take a special coach to be able to thread that paricular needle if / when it happens.

I think what Is so infuriating about the current situation is there is so little transparency about what is going on with regard to NIL.

Well, NIL is literally a fancy way of saying 'endorsement deal'.

You likely don't know who has endorsement deals in the NFL, MLB, etc unless you see someone acting as a spokesman. But they may wear a certain shoe, drink a certain sports drink, etc. and make lots of cash despite never making an ad.

If this is how it works then the richest/biggest donor gets way too much influence in who plays.

The only way to fix this is to make NIL payments something the school/coaches decide. When a millionaire gives a bunch of money it shouldn't be directed at one player.
Hmmm. Is it against the rules for yella fella (for example) to give a player money or does it have to go through a collective?

Who would enforce that?🤔

I'm not a lawyer but there has got to be a way to leverage this mess in a way that makes the game-- and the players-- better. Seems like there ought to be a way for the powers that be to designate that the biggest percentage (just spitballing, say 75%) of every NIL contract pays out after the season is over. Pay the guys a moderate amount (25%) through the season, and at the end of the season add bonuses for performance. Incorporate a clause for players that get hurt to still get paid. Only open the transfer portal after all contracts are paid. Not trying to hijack the thread, but the previous comments got me thinking again of just how destructive NIL is without any guidelines or restrictions.
Anything is better than what we currently have...🤔

I’m still disappointed in how Saban handled it last season. If it’s true that Milroe threw a hissy fit in film study from the Texas game, then Saban should have made it public knowledge he was suspended. These guys are PAID to win football games now. The days of sparing the players’ feelings are over. If the coaches are going to let the players run the team, then this sport is already doomed.
That is a point Josh Pate made years ago. "Hey, if you are getting paid, you are an employee now. You can be fired like any employee for non-performance. Is this the way we want college football to be?"
I feel nostalgia for the days of sparing a player's feeling because his is an amateur, playing for tuition and the love of the school. They're just kids, etc.
Well, that system has been murdered.
You are some flavor of pro football player now, so better get a tougher skin.
