Play AD for Florida for a day:
If Steve Spurrior is not available, who would you choose to be your next Head Coach?
I believe the following is a pretty good list of College Football names, with a proven track record for winning, even in smaller conferences.
1) Kirk Farentz, Iowa, 2004 record, 5-2
2) Urban Meyer, Utah, 2004 record, 7-0
3) Jeff Tedford, Cal, 2004 record, 6-1
4) Dan Hawkins, Boise St, 2004 record, 7-0
5) Add a name to list

Tide-HSV mentioned a good one--Jim Donnan. That man belongs on the sidelines alot more than he does working at ESPN(Although I do like watching him on Talkin' Sports w/ Danny Sheridan). What a waste of ingenious coaching talent if you ask me.
My best guess right now is they will make a full court press to get Spurrier back before they seriously go after anyone else.

rick neuheisal

Im wondering when Rick Neheuisal will be snapped up by some college. Id take him if shula left in a heartbeat. He's the best basically unemployed coach who would come to bama. He got fired unjustly for just taking part in and lying about being in an ncaa betting pool.

Neuheisel is snake. I wouldn't want him anywhere near ALABAMA. He was one step ahead of the NCAA when he left Colorado. Besides, what has he ever won? Why are so many folks taken in by this snake-oil salesman?

No question about it...Steve "the old ballcoach" Spurrier!

That's not even a real poll is it? Give me a break...you don't have their #1 guy up on the list. It would be like asking Alabama if we would have taken Gene Stallings back if he were interested prior to our hiring of Coach fRan or even Price or Shula for that matter! It's no contest...you want the guy who delivered you to the promised land!

Gene Stallings WOULD have taken the job if offered. He basically came out and said it publivly on the radio.

And the UF job is Spurrier's if he wants it.

And Deliveryman35, very good point about Donnan.

How about Ralph Nader

>GASP< Just kidding!!!!!!!

Gosh - the way rumors get going sometimes, that'll probably surface here in the next 24 hours......... :)

Actually what Stallings said was>>>>

He would do whatever we needed him to do but that it would be a stop-gap position because he didn't want to coach for a long time due to many factors, the least of which was his age.

Yes, he would have taken it if we needed him, but our first priority was getting a young head coach who would stay with us through the tough times and make us successful over that long term. Gene would have been everybodies favorite, but he never would have stayed more than a couple of years at the most, which would have hurt in recruiting because every other coach would have used it against us since we couldn't have told the kids how long our coach was staying.

If I was at Florida, I'd take a serious look at Joe Tiller of Purdue. Innovative offensive coach (he is heralded for the bringing the forward pass into the Big 10, as Spurrier was in the SEC), solid recruiter, winning track record, etc. Realistically, he's accomplished about all you can at Purdue. Unlike Meyer, Hawkins, and Petrino, he's proven he can win in a big conference. Unlike Tedford, he's not destined for the NFL. At Florida, Tiller would have the facilities, recruiting base, fan base, and some tradition that Purdue doesn't have.

At age 61, he might not fit the "hot young coach" mold AD's lust after, but Miami and Florida State are winning in the Sunshine State with geezers at the helm. Tiller can probably go for another 8 to 10 years.

I don't know who will be the new coach at UF, but I suspect that if its anybody besides Spurrier, Gator fans will not be pleased with the decision no matter who it is. Spurrier has said enough in his interviews to at least get the Gator fans foaming at the bit. In the way he has handled it so far, he probably won't look like the bad guy if he chooses to go back or not. The fact that he has not said "No, I won't be back" in so many words, puts all the burden on Foley and friends. Remember, the old ball coach a slick character. This could get real interesting!
