take the sample test for yourself and see.

Walters Football Site: Wonderlic Sample Test

I took it and missed 1 for a score of 47.5 I missed the one about the 21 page article with small and large type. Quite honestly I really only had trouble with two of the questions and got one of them wrong. These guys are dumb as posts. I wouldn't hire any of them to mow my lawn. Fortunately they are exceptional athletes and will make more money in the next few years than I will in my whole life.....

I don't believe any of those online "sample" wonderlic tests are really representative of the real thing, although they might still test some of the same thoughts. The scores are designed to result in a bell curve - basically, where getting below a 10 is extremely difficult, and getting above a 40 is extremely difficult.
I have heard people claim that the average scores for many academic professions such as law and medicine is in the 30s.
These online tests make it seem like most of us could get a 40+ on the test, but there's a reason that only one player has ever been reported to make a perfect score on the test, and very very few make a 45 or higher.

I have worked with all levels of people over the years, from dumb as rocks to rocket scientists. I think IQ is a lot like talent. It is not as much what you have as how you use what you have. Not trying to say IQ is not important, just that, like talent, it is not the end all.

A lot of people think the Wonderlic is a test for how well someone can retian football plays, and to some extent it might be, but You also have to rememebr these owners are looking for a face to their franchise. Sometimes (expesically the # 1 pick) teams are trying to find someone that will be able to talk infront of the media, look like they have a clue, and probably have some good financial skills so after they retire will also represent the teams well.

So why was Jamarcus Russel taken #1 overall then?

Agreed. Football IQ is different than Medical IQ which is different than Mechanic IQ etc.

IQ is simply potential, and to be honest is a sliding scale anyway. 100 is always average - therefore a person who was a 100 40 years ago might not be a 100 today.

Actually, according to most research people are getting smarter and smarter - due to advances in education, media, etc. Yes, we have our stupid, vapid pop culture - but never should a generation be judged on the stupid things they choose to do to wind down.

To be fair then, that guy who seems dumb as bricks to us might've been considered above average for our great grandfather's generation. It's all relative.

I think the timed part of the test hurts these guys more than not being able to come up with the right answer. If you doubled the time they have to take it they probably would do a good bit better.

You guys who are talking about "football knowledge" as though it is distinct from other forms of knowledge are missing the point, which is:

How the hell did AJ Green or Patrick Petersen stay eligible to play ball if neither can must a double digit Wonderlic score?

I think this is the most important thing to remember. For a lot of these low scores, it's not necessarily that they're too dumb and CAN'T do the questions, it's that they can't do the questions FAST ENOUGH. Big difference there...

First don't throw too many stones at these guys because our own Julio Jones reportedly scored a 12... not much difference between 10 & 12! Second IQ tests are about as useful as sand for figuring out how 'intelligent' someone is. I've known people with doctorates who I'm surprised can tie their own shoes and grade school dropouts with more common sense than most. Give me someone with common sense (ie good decision making ability) over a mad genius 4 out of 5 times in most situations... including football. I've taken 4 IQ test & 1 wonderlic style test scoring low 70s/mentally disabled in Jr High to 168 (160+=genius). They're useless... If someone can't speak plainly and articulate succinct thoughts they're probably not so bright. I say using common sense in judging these guys one on one is much more useful than the wonderlic... then again I don't run a NFL franchise! ;)

Everyone needs to cut Peterson some slack. He was probably just dehydrated when he took the test. ;)
