Re: Todd McShay being made of fool of by AJ

With all due respect, I don't agree with premise, mc. McShay was very complimentary of AJ, but the pro game is a lot different then throwing to wide open receivers and an overmatched college secondary. AJ is a great college quarterback, but so was Tom Brady, who was a low draft pick, too. The timing of the comments, however, as our QB threw his hardest rope of the game, was priceless.

I don't hold a grudge against any of the draft doofuses, but how can they all be so sure that AJ won't go in the first round when Blaine Gabbert, Christian Ponder, EJ Manuel, etc all have in the last couple years?

Thanks for posting this, all I know about AJ, is that I consider him the best QB in college football, that can make all the throws, has above average arm strength, and is the best "Field General, that's come out of college football in a long time..All these bumbling fools in the media can kiss the backsides of "JohnnY football" all they wanna..I wouldn't trade AJ for him or any other QB in college football..

Re: Todd McShay being made of fool of by AJ

The best homework being done ahead of draft day, well that does not always translate into a draft pick living up to expectations. Much like sure fire, can't miss high school athletes that somehow manage to flounder in the college game, a college quarterback that is expected to to do much can fail miserably at professional level. By the same token a college quarterback that little was expected, can become a future first ballot NFL Hall of Fame inductee. See Tom Brady, 199th pick that was considered more of a game manager with arm strength that would not allow the deep outs that he would need to be able to throw to be a successful NFL QB. The leadership, the commitment to do the work that is required to improve ones self and just the heart can't be measured. Sometimes its more than just what shows up on a combine stat sheet. Will AJ be another Brady. Probably not. But neither will a lot of the can't miss prospects being touted by the draft day experts. The measurables may say one thing, but I would not bet against AJ McCarron being in a Pro Bowl game somewhere in the next five years. Which begs the question, do they even still play a Pro Bowl game anymore?:D

I think it all depends on who AJ goes to whether he will be a successful NFL qb or not. It such a different game and the organization he goes to is going to be a huge factor in whether he succeeds or not.

Highway69 made a lot of sense, and I suppose is why we are ready to prove some of the scouts wrong. And it gets old listening to comments like McShay's. How about move past that conversation and and onto something with a little more depth? But that goes back to the quality of the watered down announcer's at ESPN who are using the same non evolving talking points.

I believe AJ is a better QB than a Geno Smith, but you never heard a word about his lack of consistency or dual threats in general in the NFL. Your initial label sticks, and I think it boils down to entertainment value over capability of leading a team to the championship.

IMO Peyton Manning is showing the future of the QB position. A quarterback that is basically a coach and has his own supporting staff to scout teams and make sure he has a line to keep him safe while he picks you apart. Unless football becomes taboo for the upper crest, there is a crop of brainy players that will take from Peyton and then some.

Late to this party, but I didn't see anything that was too shocking. The game manager label is old and tired. AJ can make all the throws and has enough arm strength to do it at the next level.

That said, there's a lot of pretty good QBs in this draft. Bridgewater, Boyd, Fales, etc are all asked to put their team on their back and do so generally successfully. AJ has had the benefit of when we have asked him to go win a game for us, in most cases the opposition is focused on stopping someone else (RB) and AJ burns them to a crisp. That is not a criticism of him, just that we haven't see AJ win a whole bunch of games where teams are dedicated to taking away Bama's passing attack. I fully believe he can do it if presented the opportunity.

With a very good combine/senior day (I expect both to happen) I can see AJ sneaking up to a late round pick that a team early in the second round trades up for. I expect that there will be a lot of teams in the market for a QB - Texans, Browns, Jags (maybe), Raiders, Tampa, Minnesota. Then there are teams that could use one to groom for the future or push their current starter: Denver, KC, NYG, Philadelphia, St. Louis, etc. Most of these teams will have 2-3 guys they really like. If the first two they like gets taken, they will pull the trigger on 3 quickly. You see teams reach for a position all the time just because they can't afford to go down from guys they really like to guys you kind of like, especially at QB.

Almost any quarterback at Alabama is going to be labeled a game manager because we actually run the ball as more than a play to keep the pressure off the passer. The knock on him is supposedly his arm strength, but I'll bet he has more plays of 20 yards or more than just about any QB in college. AJ will be holding up his 3rd trophy as a starting QB at the end of the year and he'll have the last laugh. As far as the draft, he'll end up in a higher tier than the draft guru's who never played a down think.

All the so called experts tend to jump on the flavor of the week. It is Bridgewater's and Mariota's turn now. Bridgewater has not been tested and plays in such a weak league that anyone would put up big numbers. He never even gets his jersey dirty because they are so far ahead of everyone else in their league it is not fair. Lets see him tested in a close game when he has to improvise. Louisville has 1 big Sugar bowl victory over a disappointed to be there Florida team who has about as bad an offense as I have ever seen. Mariota puts up big numbers because they run about 40 to 50% more plays than anyone else. Think about it, He put up 366 yards passing last week which equates to about 220 yards if you run the same number of plays we run. Ok, but not great. The jury is still out to some extent on dual threat Qb's in the NFL, but if you look right now most of them are struggling.
