News Article: Alabama Hires Nate Oats From Buffalo

  • HELLO AGAIN, Guest! We are back, live! We're still doing some troubleshooting and maintenance to fix a few remaining issues but everything looks stable now (except front page which we're working on over next day or two)

Thanks for your patience and support! MUCH appreciated! --Brett (BamaNation)

if you see any problems - please post them in the Troubleshooting board!

"I'll always contend that Kent Benson's put back bucket that gave Indiana the lead with under two minutes left was offense goal tending - his hands and the ball were in the cylinder but I digress.....)"

I'll raise you an additional digress: Benson's egregious flop on Leon (who was at the rim with the ball in his hands) was one of the worst big time calls in the history of the NCAA tournament.

Thanks for reminding me of that. Now that you mention it I do recall that.

The other thing to remember as well about the tournament at that time; there was no seeding. Alabama was ranked 8th nationally at the time. The opening round they drew #4 North Carolina in Dayton and we absolutely waxed them. We then get the privilege of facing #1 Indiana.

If there was seeding, it is likely we would have been no worse than a #2 regional seed which almost certainly improved our chances at least of being in the regional final.

The way he talked about watching Sprewell, Horry, and McDyss will play well the entire fan base.

We did indeed get somewhat hosed in that game, because the offensive foul not only cost us a bucket it fouled Leon out. Had the right call been made Benson would have been gone and we probably would have had them.
C.M's run was one of the best we've had.

Listened to the presser and, while his name didn’t excite me yesterday (because I didn’t know who he was), he won me over a little. Liked the blue collar stuff! We will see what happens but, he hit the right notes in the presser, IMO.

Looks like there are two openings on staff. One assistant is coming from Buffalo.

Best case? Coach Newton only went to 2 tourneys....

That is true, but lacks context.

True, Newton did go to only two NCAA tournaments. But in those two years (1975 and 76), there were only 25 and 32 teams, respectively, in the tournament at all.

He was in the NIT (which, at the time was a most respectable tournament), an additional 4 times. There is no doubt that, if the NCAA tournament had had 68 teams back then, he would have been to six out of his last 8 years, and a good chance of 7 out of nine.

Keep in mind, he took over an abysmal program. Went 4-20 his first year, 1-17 in the SEC. The second, he was 8-18 (5-13 SEC). Then 10-16 (6-12). Then the breakthrough at 18-8 (13-5 SEC).

After the three-year total rebuild, he finished worse than 3rd in the SEC only once (4th). Won three SEC championships in a row (1974-75-76).

Also, that was during at a time in which the SEC schedule was a double round robin....every team played every other team home-and-home, so schedule luck was kept to a minimum.

CM Newton was a fine coach, and the only one we’ve had that you could mention in the same breath was Wimp.

Between Wimp and CM, it’s debatable. Wimp was certainly more consistent, and successful in the NCAA. But he also didn’t have the rebuilding project that Newton did, and didn’t win as many SEC regular-season titles. No doubt both were fine coaches, and would run circles around what we’ve had since.

BTW — I didn’t forget Johnny Dee. But I didn’t include him because he was at Alabama only 4 years, was really good only two of those, and left the cupboard pretty bare when he skipped town.
