Alabama QB competition article

If Jalen transfers, you can bet your life that every credit that he has earned at Alabama would be accepted by the school that takes him. He is an athlete. It would be a part of the transfer agreement.

Trust me, they will take him.

If a school wants him, every hour will count, believe me. Athletes dwell in a different world than everyday students...
Well I've long known that Star Athletes receive special treatment....but...

Wow... I'm honestly a bit surprised that it would extend so far to accept 4 full years worth of undergraduate transfer credits.

The cutoff is usually around 64 Hours of Credits.

It takes around 120-130 Hrs for most BS Degrees. To take the extra 50+ Hours worth of Credits JUST for being a Student Athlete is crazy to me.

But Life's not fair and I definitely take you guys word for it.

I get that. The issue is, what happens if Tua gets hurt and the backup has to play in more than four games? Now, Jalen is either relegated to being third string, or burns a year toward an end that isn't real clear, especially if his goal remains to be an NFL QB.

Note: I think that NFL QB thing is really the father's goal. It's a pipe dream. He has NFL talent at another position -- maybe RB, maybe TE/HB, and maybe outside LB -- but not QB.

Agree with everything except the bold part. Jalen does not have NFL talent at any position. That sounds harsh but he's not some freakish athlete or exceptionally fast / quick. He's got a good blend of size and speed for a college QB but nothing out of the ordinary that would mean a NFL team just has to get him on the field. Not enough lateral agility to play RB and not big enough for TE. The truth is that not only are most NFL players freakish athletes but most are expert tacticians at their positions. Jalen isn't showing up and playing LB or S in the NFL. Just not feasible..

If Hurts transfers during the season, will he be considered same as Barnett?

I'm not CA and I've never had as strong of an opinion about BB as some, but I think Jalen's a totally different situation.

Jalen has given 2 years to the program and never done one thing he hasn't been asked to do. He simply has reached his ceiling at the QB position and some young, freaky stud has blown past him to stardom. Totally different situation IMO.

Not by me. But then again I didn't really take too much issue with Barnett either.
I think he jumped prematurely. Like a gamer rage-quitting. If he'd stuck it out I actually think he could've stolen the position back. If you go look at his mop-up duty action he was throwing the ball pretty well. He just needed to stick somewhere and develop. But, maybe if he stuck around then Tua wouldn't have committed. All hypothetical. I don't really care. He was a baby about it and wasn't seeing things straight and, as we have seen, jumping ship did him no favors.

At this point history has shown that those who abandon the Tide mid-tenure don't tend to have overwhelming amounts of success. Some do alright. That young DB that is with Ohio State is doing ok. But most of the others just go JUCO and then disappear. Others transfer to big name schools and sit in the middle of the depth chart like they did here. Hurts would be considered a starter at some schools but not others. His Dad is wrong about the "biggest college free-agent of all time" or whatever. There's a strong possibility that if/when he leaves he sits on the bench as well depending on where he goes, the system, and the other QB's on roster. It's tough out there man. Grass ain't always greener, even for athletes like Hurts.

Oh yea, I don't think he made the right move in the end. But I also don't feel anger or whatever towards him. He is just a kid trying to figure it out.

Assuming all the talking heads and the TF board (including me) are right, and Tua wins the job.....

If I'm Jalen, I transfer before the season starts.

Here's why -- I've clearly lost out to someone the coaches think is a better player. The nightmare scenario is that Tua gets hurt early in the year.

If that's the case, one of two things happen, and neither are good:
1. I play and spend the year in Tuscaloosa knowing I'm a caretaker. Then transfer after graduation in December, and have only one year left to play. Or....

2. Mac Jones steps in for Tua, meaning either I'm #3, or I look like a prima donna not giving it up for the team I'm on.

Avoid the drama, leave while everybody understands everybody's motivations, and we part friends.

I wholeheartedly agree. If he leaves before the season, sits a year, he still has two years of eligibility. He could not play this fall, graduate in December, and leave as a Graduate transfer and play next fall and would still have another year after that to play. Staying does nothing for him, it could however create possible dissension on the team and hurt chances for another NC. I hope this would not happen, but you never know with 18-22 year olds.

"Staying does nothing for him"
Well, but he has those 4 games to burn, and he probably thinks he can still be the starting qb.

"it could however create possible dissension on the team and hurt chances for another NC"
I agree with you there, and I, too, wish he'd transfer before the season but I don't think that's going to happen.

Me either - but once again, we see the examples of what I've talked about for Y E A R S. Everyone associated with the Game of CFB sees it for what it really is - a Multi-Billion Dollar BUSINESS; No different than Pop Music, Software development, Banking, Hollywood movie production, the Fashion industry, Auto-making, etc., etc., etc.,

Everyone, that is, but the FANS. :(

Us fans, by and large, are still buying into the MYTHOLOGY that the NZAA LOOOOOOOVES To push, that CFB (and CBB) is an "Amateur Sport" played by regular college students who would be on the same campus even if they had never played Football or Basketball, and that "Most of us will go pro in something other than sports"....... Implying that most of them don't arrive on campus as Freshmen WANTING to go pro in sports, first and foremost in their lives.

NOBODY here, IF we were age 20 and possessed of marketable skills, would stay in a dead end job after the boss told us we will never be promoted and never get a raise. NOBODY here would advise any of our kids to stay in a dead-end job, IF that kid had other options.

But let one of our CHATTEL Athletes leave campus??? OH "BLANK" NO!! He OWES us!!!!

I'm not so sure. Jalen IS deceptively fast. We've seen him- maybe not run away from DB's the way D. Harris does, but at least match their speed at times, and he's not exactly "Doug Flutie" sized. Jalen is listed on our roster as 6'2 - 218. He'd be small by NFL TE Standards, but not tiny - there ARE current NFL starting TE's that are listed at 6'2 and 6'3.

And I'm not prepared to say out-of-hand that he couldn't develop as a TE, H-Back or even a RB if he committed to learning the position and spent at least a year in college (here or elsewhere) training for and playing the position.

That said, I think it would be in his best interest to pick a new position and spend the next two years at Alabama learning. But that's NOT what I expect to happen.

I expect to Tua to be Named as starter at the beginning of the Louisville game, and I expect Jalen to transfer - either in January, or perhaps in August or September, and to appear as the starting QB at another school in August 2019. Play one or two years, post great numbers, and go undrafted. :(

And that will be a shame. "IMO"

Jalen would need to work really hard to become an NFL player at another position. He probably has the strength and speed but idk if he has the agility/wiggle. He may gain more of that if he changes his workout habits though. He does seem to have enough athleticism to be an NFL player at another position but he would have to work on it. He isn't Lamar Jackson when it comes to looking like a clear NFL player at multiple positions purely based on athleticism.

IMO, he can benefit by staying. He could play 4 games without penalty, thus getting further playing time. And he can be trained by Enos who is a very good QB coach. He can also experience another successful season with his teammates, the coaches and fans. If he doesn't have the heart to be 2nd team it's understandable, but he has already proven he is an unusual person.

As far as dissension, I don't see that being likely. Actually, it's been his teammates who have shown the most frustration with the absence of Tua's skill on the field. They are probably all on board. No one can reasonably accuse CNS of pulling the plug too quickly or being insensitive towards Jalen. Dissension is conceivable, but IMO, highly unlikely for multiple reasons.
