Alabama QB competition article

Mac Jones absolutely looks like a talent, but you need a 3rd QB. Injuries happen.

Agreed. Counting Jalen, Bama has six on it's Roster. They wouldn't be there if they did not possess potential. Surely, in an emergency, such as in the defense last year, Bama has the coaches, and the GOAT CNS, to adapt, and adjust, one or two of those other than Tua and Mac, to run an offense the caliber of which Bama will field this year. OSU did remarkedly well in that situation a few years ago. I, and I'm sure you, remember that all too well.

Roll Tide!

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

There may not have been as much communication by CNS to the Hurts' after the game leading up to spring practice. Coach was rebuilding his entire coaching staff and trying to recruit at the same time. I am sure plenty was said in the winter and the Hurts family didn't like what they heard. So daddy went public with a media threat.

I suspect that CNS and staff did shut down communication from that point on knowing those conversations would not be kept confidential. I imagine however this narrative was going to play out coach didn't want it to originate from the staff. The assistant coaches certainly didn't want to touch the situation so they likely and smartly avoided the issue too.

So there probably is some truth to what Jalen said. However he and his family took the reigns of the PR train on this back in the spring and are trying to control the narrative. Unfortunately they are driving the train straight over the cliff...

The national media doesn't really see it that way. Everyone rushed to say how eloquent or whatever he sounded. Media is gonna Stan for Hurts on this one. Saban would never pull his scholarship because Hurts made the "I'm close to graduating" a part of the narrative; may see him just remove him from team activities if his attitude is like this or worse internally.

I think it's important to him to get his degree. However, I mentioned before that one possibility might be that he would withdraw from the team and just finish his degree as an academic student. I think the odds of that soared yesterday...

A school that really wanted him to transfer there would bend, amend, or change their rules in order to allow him to transfer in all of his credits and finish there. Waivers of all sorts happen all the time, and I think if it really came down to it, they would find a way to make this part a non-factor.

The media does what it does - looks for cracks and drives a wedge into them as deeply as it can. With the internet this stuff moves too fast. No one takes time to think before they start writing because of the rush to be "first".

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

The part I don't understand from the rational point of view (which you'd hope his coach daddy would take) is this: if you can't complete passes to the receivers at Alabama when you throw the ball, how in the hell are you going to be able to do it elsewhere with a lesser O-line and lesser receivers? Amari Cooper often made Blake Sims look like Phil Simms in his better NFL days.

FWIW, I've made this observation a few times. People act like he'll leave Alabama and go light it up somewhere else, but the truth is, if he can't do it here with the OL and playmakers he has, where can he?

He'll transfer to a place where he won't have as good as a online or skill players and he still won't be able to stay in the pocket, go thru progressions and throw accurately.

This fantasy of thinking something will click and he'll become NFL material (at QB) if he gets in a different system forgets he's not a good passer at all.

She's upset with the whole situation and lashed out. Anybody and everybody is a potential target. The part about being compliant and controlled is a clear shot at Saban. The thing at the end about fans turning on Jalen but not the president (assuming Trump there) is just plain weird.

I never thought I'd say this about them, but emotions are running high, and given where they've already gone with this, more inflammatory language from the Hurts camp wouldn't surprise me. If that happens, look for an instantaneous and permanent parting of the ways.

The equivalence she tried to draw between turning on Jalen and not on the President is beyond weird. I know what I personally think, but I won't go there.

But such a ridiculous statement makes me think you are right...get ready for more drama from the Jalen camp.

This "All Access" programming working to your benefit. ESPN now focused on the Saban pieces rather than the Jalen interview.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

In the days after the NC, I made the observation (prediction) that Tua would have to get hit by a train to not be the starter come September.

Little did we know Jalen would railroad himself with such self-inflicted, off the field, decision that would derail his chances.

Very true...............he hasn't done himself any favors, and with his father's comments and now mom's comments, the hole is pretty deep and hard to climb out of

Listened to a little bit of Sirius this morning and the media is already on Jalen’s side. I hope Saban doesn’t respond to any of this, as he is in a no win situation. Better to let it play out with the team, they usually do a good job of self-correcting, if it is warranted.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Cecil speaks:

My expectation is that Saban will be less outraged than people think, but not every hurricane makes landfall where you think it will.

There’s a perfectly plausible scenario, and always has been, in which Saban chooses to play Tagovailoa based on his belief that Tagovailoa gives the Alabama team a better chance to win football games. All this off-the-field drama may be irrelevant.

But Jalen Hurts wanted to talk. He spoke what he felt in his heart. Perhaps that will come with a cost, as it often does.

"...not every hurricane makes landfall where you think it will." - my translation: CNS will deal with this calmly in public, but Jalen will get some straight talk in private.

Saban will probably respond to this in a presser the way that he always does - with an answer that speaks to the entire team, not an answer that is meant to really answer the question asked.

I agree..............I don't think he will take the bait the media is stringing out there. If anything, I think his team will rally around him, as will the fans. If anything, I wouldn't blame him if he completely ignored them

That doesn't surprise me because there's a lot of people in the media who are anti-Saban. They are jealous of his success so they try to make him look like a villain in almost any conflict.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

What we saw of Mac Jones in the Spring, I think we could do a Coker-style offense with him if he got pressed into duty. Still I want Jalen to be on the team because he still could theoretically be our best quarterback if Enos can mold his ability to execute consistently. Tua is an above average college QB athlete but Jalen has NFL skill position level of athletic ability. If he could execute just a bit better on a few types of plays, he could win a Heisman here. But it is not worth it for locker room morale if the attitude taken is so sour.

Agree that it would have been better to have pre-interview Jalen on the team for several reasons, but IMO, none of them is that he can be Bama's best QB. Tua is simply miles ahead. Even as a runner, Tua is overall almost as good. He is quicker and more elusive and makes far better decisions on the RPOs. Jalen is much faster and stronger but IMO does not use his strength well. But Tua is a man too, he is stout. Jalen is so far behind Tua that is has likely contributed to Jalen's frustration. Knowing that you have no real chance is a killer for a competitor. The team also knows this and Jalen sees that they do and frankly has known for a while that it is over - all just an opinion.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Well, looks like rival fans and sports media are getting what they wanted all along.....with the help of Jalen and his parents....a full blown QB controversy.
Jalen has been treated as fairly as anyone on the team and has been given every opportunity to win his position.
CNS has always said it is a new team every year (you can't rely on last year).
Each player, at every position, must earn his spot every year.
"Much ado about nothing" , more ":me" than team.

Go back to SEC Media Days and the Cam Robinson arrest situation. Finebaum made a comment about “what the they (the media) thinks.....” . Saban let him know real quick “he didn’t give a “hoot” about what “they” thought.

I’m sure he’ll address it in a “round about fashion” but you can bet he’ll do it a very deliberate, calculated way which gets his point across and puts them in their place.

I wouldn't doubt it one bit.............I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end of the withering reply ; )
