Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

Just a thought/question after watching some of the practice videos from this year so far: has the friendship between Jalen and Tua been strained? Last year it just seemed Jalen and Tua were always giving high fives, were the first ones out there encouraging the other when things were going good or bad, etc. It seems, in the short videos that we get to see, that is gone. I don't like it.

Now before any of you say, "Well, yeah! There's a competition going on and that has taken a back seat." or something like that, it seems, at least to me, this would be a perfect way to "win the team". Showing the other players that you can handle your business, but you can also look past yourself and try to encourage others around you to get better.

Just a thought.

I'm pretty sure all that kumbaya best buddy story line was never exactly how it really was, especially immediately after the title game.

Does anyone know who is getting the most reps with the 1s? I read somewhere that they split time in the first practice. I guess we'll know more after the scrimmage.

What I had heard is that they were still splitting time but individual drills Tua was first in line. That may mean jack squat. I pretend like it means nothing.
Tea leaves and crystal balls everywhere...though this competition is a lot less murky than 2016 and 2015.

I dont want Bama’s players to all be best friends and buddies. I want them to be the hardest working, most dedicated, superior athletes, students of the game and have a team first attitude.

They can go fishing and play golf together when they retire from the NFL.

Does Mack Brown have any eligibility left?
Maybe a little less than that head coach at Kansas State University. Now if Coach Snyder can have a contract extended at 78 years of age, I'm just thinking what we may be able to do for Coach Saban when he's 78.

I think most of them get along just fine.
What you want from them and them being able to be buddies with their teammates are not mutually exclusive.

Saban press conference:

Saban on Jalen Hurts' comments: "Every player has a right to express what he thinks and he feels. ... This is probably a lot more important to people outside our organization than it is on the inside."
I think this quote is nothing more than to put out the flames of this story. It's coach speak. I think Saban said one thing publicly and another thing internally. Coaches do that all the time. My guess is he wasn't pleased at all at how Jalen expressed himself in that interview. He just said whatever needed to be said to stamp out the media fire. If his play on the field hasn't already done it, this more than likely sealed the deal for him being the starter. Because I don't believe for one second this has been a real competition. I think this has been an attempt to keep two very good quarterbacks on the team and use one as an insurance policy while developing quarterback #3 (Mac Jones).

I hope you're right, but don't count on getting a lot of info about the scrimmage. I don't think CNS has released stats during the last two years. With the high-profile nature of this competition, I don't look much info, but I hope I'm wrong.

What I wish, if it's going to be Tua, is that he'd just name him as starter and let him have the most time with the ones. I doubt it happens after the first scrimmage unless Jalen just really stinks it up...but I could possibly see that after the second or third one.

I understand and agree with all y'all are saying. Maybe I didn't phrase the thought correctly. What I meant is that I see NONE of the same type of sportsmanship that I saw last year as they did their warm ups together. There is a difference in best buddies and teammates, I get that. I was just pointing out that there was a noticeable difference.

Sorry for just using your quote. It was the last one and I wanted to bold the part that I thought pertained to my point.

As long as they're not at odds with each other and it's causing a problem within the team, I don't think it's a bad thing. I'm sure Jalen's pride is hurt more than anything. I don't think "good sportsmanship" is hugging and patting each other on the butt at every turn. They're competing and they are each other's competition. So they have to get into a frame of mind that helps keep them focused and understand that "Hey, I'm trying to beat this guy out and getting too friendly can make me drop my guard and drive." I think everything's fine between the two.

I think Coach Saban will be retired to his lake house at 78.

Well, I'm working my butt off at that age and probably will work up until noon the day of my funeral. Barring injury or illness, I think he will do the same...

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

I just can't see CNS retiring soon. He's in a lot better shape health wise than the average 66 year old. Just being around the team seems to keep him young.

In watching the 1st episode of 'Training Days: Rolling w/ the Tide" you can see how much fun he has being around these guys going out on the Lake with the Boat and Jetski's and Tubes etc.....playing Basketball and riding scooters...LOL... and just being positive influence on all these young men in general.

He's spent the majority of his life being a part of a 'Team' and probably wouldn't know what to do with himself outside of one.

I think he will at least be around for the next 5 years spanning the 'Tagovailoa Bros.' era.

I hope he stays that long, or longer, but I don't see him coaching past 2020, or maybe sooner if he wins another national championship or two.

Re: Alabama QB competition article (ALL QB posts here, please)

When we have this scrimmage today, and Hurts is with the first team the first series, let's don't all freak out. I am pretty sure that so far in the daily drills, Hurts was first in the drills the first day, and Tua was first the 2nd day. It's my understanding they've been alternating like this the whole time. Saban is just carrying this out same as he said he would (though I don't know why), and he'll give Jalen the first series because he's the upperclassman, if no other reason. I sure hope, though, that I am wrong and it's Tua from the get to, but I don't expect that.

I also expect Hurts will look pretty good in this mostly no contact on the qb scrimmage. It's when the good defenses roll around, in a live game, when it gets bad. And yeah, I did watch the spring scrimmage.

Just curious why you think this since it's almost exactly the opposite of what CNS says about it publicly?

Unless there's a rogue twitter account giving some insights, I imagine what we'll hear is the both of the QBs played well, but made some mistakes and need to improve.

I understand the concern but he seems to have a LOT of gas still in the tank. I can't see Taulia committing unless he was assured that CNS would be here for the next 5-6 years.

As far as decision factors go I don't think a certain NC # is all that big. Sure privately he probably wants 1-2 more to pass CPB overall and ties or pass him for the School Record .....but none of that changes how much he loves his job and coaching all these kids/young men.

I think health issues would be the main thing that would cause him to ponder hanging it up.... but as far as we can tell he's probably more fit than most of us on this board..LOL.

I'm going to remain positive about it anyway and hope to see him navigate QB controversies for many more years!!

Speaking of this I hope somebody will post links to said rogue twitter accounts. I remember in previous years there being around 2-3 guys tweeting from the scrimmage but I've long forgot their names.
