Alabama QB competition article

His performance in the NC game was epic. He led Bama on 6 scoring drives in their last 8 possessions against one of the better Ds in the country (though were likely tired, with a weaker secondary), including the missed FG. He has much more than great physical tools: very well grounded, a very good mind and football mind, transcendent intangibles based on reality, poise, pocket presence, quick and accurate decisions, courage, accuracy, as well as arm strength, stout body, quick afoot and more. His only shortcomings are lack of height and top end speed. The speed is not really a problem; the height is more problematic but can be worked around and is less of a problem in college vs NFL.

Not to be a stickler, but the missed FG can't really be a scoring drive can it?
But he did lead the offense on 5 scoring drives (3 tds and 2 fgs).

In how I count scoring drives - any drive that gets one within a reasonable, <40 yd, FG, whether it's missed or not - it is :). Not the O's or QB's fault if ST fails. But yes you are technically correct. But I would not give Fromm a scoring drive after losing 11 yards on his possession, just because they have a great FG kicker. Stats, stats, stats - you can make'em say many correct but wrong things. Tua/Bama did their job on that last drive, only atypically timid coaching and especially bad ST stopped 'em.

Hey, this is a win-win: you are correct and I'm right .

I agree. And then there's the point that they are probably having to "guess" who they think will start at some schools. Surely not all 130 schools have that clear of a depth chart.

Bama is case in point. Some belief Jalen might actually start against the Cards, with Tua coming in as relief and likely earning the starting position in the next game or two. That's quite possible, even thought I doubt that series of events.

^^^^ I actually am starting to think this might be the case. The scenario that I see playing out is that Jalen plays early and if Tua takes over (let's remember, he's already won the locker room) then Jalen doesn't play anymore unless an emergency injury forces things. He can then take a redshirt, get his degree and have two more years as a grad transfer.

If there is a problem with this plan, let me know. I couldn't BELIEVE what Blake Barnette was allowed to do. If there is any justice, Jalen could do something similar.

Current rules mean JH couldn't RS if he plays even one snap, unless he's injured and is allowed a medical redshirt.

This rule looks likely to change in the near future and may be retroactive, but as for now, if JH starts against UL, he cannot RS without an injury.

Ranking all 130 starting quarterbacks is just wrong. These are college kids, to say one person is the worst starting QB in FBS is unfair and cruel.
Nothing wrong, unfair, or cruel with ranking everyone/thing in a particular group. Sometimes the truth hurts, BUT he's still a D-1 starting quarterback. Only 129 others in the whole country.

I agree completely. I'd argue his height isn't even as much of an issue as people are making it out to be. He's at least listed as taller than some of the other short QBs(Wilson & Brees) that he's often compared to.

But I still think the ranking and undefeated talk is over the top.

Yup. These are young men, not little boys, let's stop acting like we have to handle them with kid-gloves, emotionally.

Most are tougher than many seem to think - and if they're not, they need to toughen up before the real world crushes them.

We need to stop treating kids' "feelings" and emotions like porcelain. If someone can't handle being critiqued and judge within the confines of sports then they need to go do something else. Some people aren't cut out for competition and a good test to separate the wheat from the tares is how someone reacts to a ranking list. If a kid looks at this list and see his name at #130 and it crushes his world, makes him feel picked on. Then odds are he's not cut out for sports. No matter his talent level. He's not mentally or emotionally cut out for it. But if a kid looks at that list and sees his name at #130 and it drives him to get better, puts a chip on his shoulder and gives him the drive to change that ranking. Then that kid is cut out for sports.

Why am I both insulted that Will Grier is ranked higher, and a bit concerned that a guy who hasn't started a game yet is #2 on the list?

Because if you are going to rank Tua that high then why on earth would you put Grier of all people ahead of him.

I was probably a little over the top in my comment. No, I don't think #130 is going to need therapy after reading the list. I just think such a list is more fit for the NFL.

However, I think a list of all 130 quarterbacks, many of whom have never taken a meaningful snap in college, is idiotic. We don't even know for certain if some of these (such as the #2 guy) will even start the first game.

What else is a football writer going to do in the offseason?

Many believe Grier will be the #1 QB in the 2019 draft. I am not a believer of that so it will be interesting to see what kind of year he has.

Yea I've seen that but idk that I buy it. He's good but from the few games I saw of him he sounds over hyped a little. Full disclosure, one of the games I watched was his worst game when he completed under 50% and threw for 4 ints vs Oklahoma State.

Unfortunately this is a reality in any sport. We like to keep lists, make rankings, dissect information, then discuss said dissected information and so forth. It's what people who are unable to participate, but who love the sport, do to get as close to the sport as possible.

Plus it is May and nothing else interests me right now.
