A website I own just finished an "Alabama's Best Team of All-Time" campaign. We nominated, researched, and voted on athletes for this team. The winners may not have been the best at their position, but they won the majority vote and therefore are OUR winners.

Just wanted to get any thoughts/comments or feedback on the winners.

Offensive Coordinator - Homer Smith
Running Back - Shaun Alexander
Guard - John Hannah
Tight End - Bear Bryant
Wide Receiver - Ozzie Newsome
Tackle - Chris Samuels
Fullback - Wilbur Jackson

Place Kicker - Phillip Doyle

Head Coach - Bear Bryant
Defensive Coordinator - Bill Oliver
Defensive End - John Copeland
Inside Linebacker - Lee Roy Jordan
Outside Linebacker - Derrick Thomas
Cornerback - Antonio Langham
Safety - George Teague
Defensive Tackle - John Hand
Punter - Lane Bearden

I was a little surprised to see that CPB was voted the best TE, but then when I tried to think of anyone else I keep freezing up on Ozzie, who was a receiver in college. My brain is in lockdown this morning.

Hard not to give honerable mention to several others though, and we have had so many great quarterbacks. Starr, Stabler, and with Barkers winning percentage, you have to mention him among all the big names.

We did this a few years ago on Tigerforums and basically decided that we had to make two teams and separate the guys who played in the two-way era from those that played in the modern era of platoon football. Billy Cannon was an All-American halfback at LSU but was also one of the best linebackers in the country, something that is often forgotten.

A guy who played end in Bryant's era was an offensive and a defensive end and it took a completely different set of skills and physical tools than an end in Newsome's era.

Insert David Palmer as a WR/Return man. Also, I would have to put Chris Mohr on the list as Punter.

While I was in school back in the 70's, I remember a long-time SEC ref who claimed that in all the years he had refed SEC games the best blocker he had ever seen was hands down Coach Bryant. He said he was a great DE who was a vicious tackler, but Coach Bryant absolutely exploded into people when he blocked.

IMHO, Ken Donahue was head and shoulders better than Bill Oliver. And my Dad claimed Harry Gilmer was the best DB Bama ever had. But he also thought Bobby Marlow was the best running back he had seen at the University.

Just my opinion, but the list posted here is way short of recognizing many greats to play for BAMA. Johnny Musso and Bobby Humpries (did I spell that rright?) for example. Don Hudson should never be off any list of great players, period.

No question the list has many greats, but I would have to build a list that was 4 deep at least for the 1st team alone and even then, I would still feel like I was leaving someone out. Sometimes stats don't tell the whole story.

Anyway, it's the off-season for sure.

Van Tiffin should be PK and where is Harry Gilmer?:BigA:
I disagree with Tiffin being our best PK. :) Tiffin made the single biggest FG in Alabama football history, but if you look at the numbers Doyle was the better kicker. Doyle hit a better percentage of his FGs and he is the school's all-time leading scorer. I'm not flaming Tiffin. He was an excellent kicker, but when you look at the numbers, I don't see how Tiffin gets the nod over Doyle. :)

Unfortunately it seems Doyle's game winning FG against UcheaT in '90 gets overlooked by a lot of fans at least when compared to Tiffin's kick, but Doyle also had a huge kick to win a game against a bitter rival as time expired (actually he kicked three FGs against UcheaT in 1990).

JMHO. :)

No prob, BB. I'm just a huge VT fan. If you ever meet him, you'll understand. As for his career, he was good in the clutch more times than once and I loved watching him kick during my college yrs.:)

Alot of positions had really close votes, including QB, WR, RB... etc

But in the end, these were the winners, right or wrong.

Thanks for all the feedback.
