An Idea for honoring Coach Saban

I've been pondering on an idea.

Should the University honor Coach Saban and name the field after him - a la "Saban Field at Bryant-Denny Stadium". Coach is legendary at this point and I don't think we can honor him enough. Now, the question is - would he go for it? Well, he does have a statue outside the stadium and that was after the 1rst National title he won with Bama.

Perhaps we could rename a street for him, too.

Heck, what about Saban Bryant-Denny Stadium?

Thoughts? Suggestions?

We could wait until his work is complete, but should we? Why? As far as I'm concerned the man has earned this. Maybe I'm wrong...

I don't like renaming things after someone until they have long retired or passed away. Lets say we rename the field after him today and tomorrow he announce he will be the head coach at Awbarn. And then goes and beats us 15 straight. Would you still want the field named after him? Case in point. Look at all the stuff that was named after Richard Scrushy. Would anyone name something after him today?

Wow. You're really stretching here. How about comparing apples with apples. Coach is 64. He's not going anywhere and coaching for 15 more seasons. A realistic point would be nice.

Hahahahahahahah. OK. Wow. I guess everyone has an opinion.

Can't really contest your point when you're saying Coach Saban will coach another 15 years, go to an opposing school and beat Alabama that many times and goes on to try and use comparisons with him and Richard Scrushy and Joe Paterno.

Instead of making wild hypotheticals and innuendo, I prefer to look at what the man HAS accomplished at Alabama, which includes 4 National Championships, 100 victories since 2007, 3 SEC titles and insane records against our most fierce rivals.

I know not everyone will agree with my point, but wow.

My point is that there is always a risk with throwing accolades on someone too soon. IMO it's best to allow some time to past and let history be the judge. I feel confident that CNS will always be viewed in high esteem and high character and would never do anything to tarnish the University of Alabama's reputation. But you never know, and it will not offend him if we wait a few years before we rename the city of Tuscaloosa after him. :)

I agree that honoring him by naming the field "Saban Field" or something like that is totally appropriate. However, I do agree with others that it is a better thing to do when he retires. I always thought that it is a highly classy thing to do at their retirement ceremony. Something that is a send off, while letting them know that they will always be a part of the University.

I will say that in my opinion, he deserves to be inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame asap. I know that he is still active and there have been active coaches inducted into the College Football HoF but with everyone jumping on this greatest coach of all time bandwagon (and justifiably so) I think he should be inducted with next year's class. The man has earned it by the way he runs the program, the way he puts the players first, the success that he has achieved and if there is ever an issue in college football the media wants an opinion on he is the first person they want to hear from.

I just think the man deserves that honor now.

I hate it when places name the field, it's so stupid and no one ever uses the name. Auburn fans don't even say Pat Dye Field, it's always just Jordan-Hare Stadium.

Just add his name to the current stadium name, it has been changed before so why not again. It was also done before Bryant retired so, do it right now. I'd prefer to wait but, wouldn't be upset if they did something now.

Not exactly OUR decision. Haha. I think once he retires and leaves us with the most incredible dynasty and legacy, he will probably get his name on something, but for now, I would just like for his name to remain on the door to the Head Coaches office. ;)

I mean they did name the Stadium Bryant-Denny while he was there and he had won 4 national titles and 8 SEC titles. That worked out for us.

During the summer of 1975, Bert Bank, who had matured from a teenage fan to a World War II hero to a state senator, used his political clout to have the stadium re-named Bryant-Denny Stadium and on April 10, 1976, during the annual A-Day game, the official dedication took place.

i tend to be of the opinion that namings (streets, stadiums, fields, buildings, etc) should wait until after the honoree has passed.

At some point in the future something a building or field or concession stand will be named for nick Saban. No need to rush into it right now. But it will happen.

Personally I say give him university Blvd. that way he runs parallel with Bryant drive through campus.
