With the VP thread nearing its limit and a selection made, this seems like a good time to shift directions and begin a new thread.

She is certainly an interesting and historic pick. She has been involved in some controversy in both her personal and political life.

So, for the next 499 posts, discuss whatever aspects of our potential next Vice President.

I will probably only watch one debate and that will be Kamala slapping the crap out of Marlon Bundo.

She wasn't my top choice, but I ultimately think it was the right decision considering the parameters and those that were still in the running.

IDK if she will ever become president, but, as an attorney, I can affirm that most prosecutors have a very strong authoritarian steak...

I like this choice. She's simultaneously competent and historic.

But I hope that Harris doesn't bring any leadership from her primary team. It was a terribly run campaign.

I am very satisfied with her selection.
I agree! It was absolutely the right political decision and time will determine the right decision for the future of the country. If this doesn't motivate the Obama coalition to get out and vote in record numbers nothing will. The Republican's only hope to avoid a sea change in November is to massively restrict registration and voting which they obviously have been attempting to do.

Very bad selection in my opinion. Should've been a selection from a swing state. She's not particularly popular at the national level which is why she bowed out before the primaries even began. She's incredibly easy for the right to make cynical "punches from the left" over her relationship to the carceral state. Of course, Biden has a similar problem. I think her minority pull demographic wise is almost completely covered by what Biden got for just being a Democrat. She's not going to inspire under 40 turnout and the younger voter could be a big deal in the general election.

The Democrat's 2020 strategy seems to be to essentially accept the voter suppression techniques wrought over the last decade and only pitch to the suburban white voters and assume they'll just get the minority over 40 vote by fiat. Let's see how it works out for them. Probably a more despairing sign for the fate of this country if it works...

I'm sort of interested in her ancestry. Her mother was Tamil from Chennai (formerly Madras), and yet she's extremely light-skinned. The Tamil are Dravidian and are dark, dark, dark. In fact northern Indians refer to them as "black." Her features aren't typical Tamil either. Just interesting to me (and probably only me). Even the name "Kamala" is more typical of Hindu, being descended from the Sanskrit for "lotus." Tamil arose, as far as can be told, on the Indian subcontinent and is unrelated to Hindu, which is the language brought in by the northern Indian Indo-Europeans. It would be interesting to see Gates do Kamala's ancestry...

O.K.

Now, on to what REALLY matters: Breaking the stranglehold tRumpublicans have on this nation before they run it completely off the rails.
As bad as this ticket is in my estimation, Biden was one of two in the primary that I thought actually had a shot before all this mess. No doubt that Trump has got to go but in the safe confines of Alabama I may consider a 3rd party vote. I could not suggest the same to those in a swing state.

...fine...as long as we don't mistake a "bad ticket" for the colossally incompetent, quasi-fascist, death-and-ruin causing, lying, egomaniac sociopath, bigoted, dimwit, traitorous opposition.

The original choice was Klobuchar. Biden had settled on her as the most plain vanilla, do-no-harm candidate available and was close to making the announcement when the Minneapolis riots broke out. After the riots her experience as Hennepin County Attorney became a liability and she was taken off the list.

Harris was Biden's second choice and he decided on her a few weeks ago. But when he made his decision she was met with such push back that he had to go back and pretend to reopen the process and look at all his options again. At the end of the day the downside of passing up on the most visible black woman primary candidate outweighed the obvious defects in her selection. As much as she arouses significant opposition, there was no way Biden could select anyone else.
