Annoying Radio Delay ... Here's the Fix

I wanted to make my first post a doozy, and try and help others at the same time, so here it goes. Hopefully this accomplishes both of those goals:

Like many of you, my fellow Alabama fans, I was tired of listening to the national television announcers, but I couldn’t deal with the delay when listening to the play-by-play on the radio while watching the game at home. Believe it or not, I figured out a simple seven-step process for overcoming this annoyance, and I figured I’d pass it along to make your lives a little easier. Consider it an early Christmas (and, hopefully, National Championship) present. All you need is a stereo that will pick up the radio broadcast and a computer located nearby with speakers to play the audio. Here’s what to do:

  • Download this freeware program: http://www.daansystems.com/freestuff/Radiodelay.exe.
  • Install the program on your computer.
  • Buy a 3.5 mm male-to-male stereo headphone cable like the one seen here: Amazon.com: 6 Foot 3.5mm Stereo Headphone Cable Male / Male Free Shipping: Electronics. (Radio Shack sells one for around $8 if you don’t want to wait for the product to ship.)
  • Plug the cable into the headphone jack of your stereo and the microphone jack on your computer.
  • Turn on your stereo and make sure it’s tuned to the Alabama game.
  • Open the Radio Delay program and use the default Input Device source (there is usually only one).
  • Click Play in the Radio Delay program and adjust the “Delay in seconds” slider until it’s matched up with the television broadcast. You can adjust the volume on your radio and it will make it louder or softer through your computer. It has a little delay before it takes effect, so be patient.

That’s it! It may seem a little complicated reading through it, but once you have everything together and start setting it up, it's easy peasy! I thought about keeping this to myself and somehow trying to turn it into a money-making enterprise, but it’s much better to give than to receive, right? Just remember to share what you have with others. And …

Hmmm... My radio is the first FM/short wave model made by Nordmende. I may need a 1/4" adapter. I'll look in my cable farm, where I probably have one. I can't deal with the delay, either and the situation is even worse with cable HD...

If you have DVR try this... As soon as the game starts on your TV hit pause for 8-9 seconds and then push play again... it should be synced up with Eli by then!

My radio is ahead of the broadcast on the TV by 2 - 3 sec. that would not work. I would have to follow the original posters way. Thanks larrynkaty :pDT_ura1:

Unless your TV broadcast is delayed. I use XM for Eli and U-Verse for TV. The XM is ahead of the TV. I have to carefully pause the XM to sync it up to the TV.

Thanks for the compliments and feedback. And I'm glad I have permission to hang around. Sorry, I'm not sure about an available software package for MACs, though.

Also, I thought about the DVR solution, but my radio broadcast is earlier than the tv broadcast, so delaying the television wouldn't work for me. I needed something to delay the radio broadcast (guess the title is a little misleading).

Rats! The Nordmende has the miserable DIN connector. The cable farm probably has one of those, also, but that means soldering...

My problem is that on Dish if the DVR is only paused 2-3 seconds it will skip ahead to Live TV.

Heck, I'm still trying to figure what this "digital TV" is that I keep hearing so much about...let alone DVR & such.

I'm a proud alum of the Dogbert School for Technology Imbeciles...
