Those 1896 crimson and white striped socks might look neat for Homecoming! Does the guy on the first row, lower right, remind anyone else of Ray Perkins?
I can see a hint of Ray in there .. my wife keeps taking that picture down. Im thinking of giving it to my dad for his Bama room.

Change is not a big deal. Tradition is tradition; however, if we change the color of our jerseys, the design of our helmets, or whatever else, it is not going to change who we are.

You have achieved the rare but not unheard of state of being right AND wrong all in the same sentence.

While we can and will change "the design of our helmets, and "whatever else" that the powers that be deem appropriate; we change the "color" of our jerseys to anything other than the true Crimson only by mistake.

That does not mean that we have never taken the field with the wrong color jerseys, though.

Cause lately, even my failing eyes seem to pick up a "cardinal" tint. :frown:

HISTORICAL HELMETS

ALABAMA

1969 c.1960s; c.1983-4 c.1960s - present
*see note 1 below

Alabama has one of the smallest sets of different historical helmet designs for the period covered by this site (1960 to present).

*1 White-shelled helmets were used by Alabama sporadically during both the 1960s and in 1983 and 1984. During the 1960s, there were apparently some occasions when the entire team wore white helmets, and other times when only a few players (apparently just eligible receivers) wore white helmets, while their teammates wore the usual crimson helmets. I have seen several photographs showing both colors in use during a game, and the latest use of the white helmets during the 1960s that I have been able to identify was during the 1968 season. During the 1983-1984 period, white helmets were worn by the whole team during certain games when the opposing team's helmets were similar in color to Alabama's crimson helmets. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who can list the specific games in 1983 and 1984 during which Alabama used white helmets (1983 vs Mississippi State, 1983 at LSU, 1983 at Vanderbilt, and 1984 at Boston College are some known instances).

Can't wear those socks. I would not wear them in a boat, I would not wear them with a goat. I would not wear them in a car, I would not wear them to a bar. I would not wear them in the rain, and I definately would not wear them in a game. I would not wear crimson and white striped socks.

were we called the cadets at one time? I knew about the thin red line , but the cadets is a new one on me....
In the book "100 Years of Alabama Football" it references the first team being known as "The Cadets". That would be 1892. They were also refered to as simply "The Varsity".

Yes I scanned John Avery a sheet from the 1996 media guide listing the helmets colors and changes , he is only interested in the versions from 1960 to present. I used to frequent that site often when he was on geocities.I used to be a regular poster.

I will relate my somewhat limited recollections of instances when we wore the white helmets. During the 1968 Cotton Bowl against Texas A&M; 1970 Astro-Bluebonnett Bowl against Oklahoma; 1971 Opener against Southern Cal in L.A.; (in these instances we wore white uniforms); 1983 at home against Memphis State (we looked ugly with crimson jerseys and white helmets-too much like Stanford); 1983 at Boston College; 1984 at Georgia Tech. I think Coach Bryant had a purpose in wearing white helmets when we wore white unis and the opposition had red helmets so that our passers could better see our receivers. I think Coach Perkins just wore white helmets when we played an OOC opponent on the road and scrapped the whole idea after we stunk things up at Grant Field in 1984. I have no explanation for the white helmets at home against Memphis State in 1983. Those are the only games for which I have first-hand evidence. RTR

I don't want to see any permanent change in the uniforms, but I am interested to see how crimson jerseys would look together with crimson pants with two white strips going down the side of the pants. Can anyone make this happen using their computer?

Thanks, rollntider

That looks interesting. I do like the look of the helmet with the script 'A'. Not sure I like the crimson pants though.

I'm just the opposite, I think the crimson pants are pretty cool. it would look much better if they matched the crimson jersey more closely. You have to look at it for a second because it is so different than what your used to, but it grows on you. I say keep the numbers on the helmet. I would like to see them try the crimson pants for one home game, just to see the response.

Hey rollntider

How about switching color of the helmet with the script 'A'? I think white helmets with the A would look pretty cool.

I've posted this...

so often, I ought to save it to my desktop, but I was in school from the mid-50s on. Leather helmets were worn until the early fifties, when plastic came in. All plastic helmets were white in the early years, because they couldn't be dyed reliably - the colors faded in sunlight. In the late fifties, a few colored helmets started popping up. Arkansas, which has nearly the same shade we have (or used to have) was an early team to use the new colored helmets. I remember thinking how cool they looked against the (almost) crimson jerseys. Then we went over to them also...
