So he could be third in command? No info.....but I'm digging the Ute's DC right now.
Ditto!!! He and team did a pretty good job according to my nightmare. No info.....but I'm digging the Ute's DC right now.
I see Smart getting bumped up also. My question is really more on the lines of who we may get to coach the linebackers. As good as Coach Saban is I don`t think he can coach every position by himself.I feel we have no need to seek a DC with CNS as our HC . I look for Kirby Smart to get the bump . If not , he'll probably go somewhere else in '10 .
It's too bad that coach Kines is occupiedI see Smart getting bumped up also. My question is really more on the lines of who we may get to coach the linebackers. As good as Coach Saban is I don`t think he can coach every position by himself.![]()
Sorry, he's the new HC at Utah State. No info.....but I'm digging the Ute's DC right now.
Yeah, but isn't this due to how CNS holds practices? It's my understanding that he avoids full contact tackling during practices to avoid injures. Thus, at the beginning of the season we tackle poorly and get better as the season goes along. With a long break between the SECCG and the Sugar Bowl poor tackle skills creep in IF THIS IS TRUE.:BigA: After last night, I will not miss Steele ! I hope we get someone to teach tackling.
Take away the fancy titles and the reality was that Steele was DC/LB coach with Smart being ADC/secondary coach .His title was associate head coach. I thought that Smart was already considered the DC. Maybe I'm wrong on this.
If he was assoc HC though, then does Bama necessarily need to replace that position, as it is not a matter of necessity in the coaching hierarchy. What we'll miss from Steele is his involvement w/ the LBs and recruiting. Whether or not his contributions can be absorbed by the current staff, I dunno. I'm still not sure what exactly it is that Bobby Williams does, but Saban seems to like him so he must be valuable.
Seriously though, Thompson probably expands his role and if they think they need another coach for recruiting purposes they'll hire someone...I know not whom. I don't expect them necessarily to replace Steele per se.
Dizzy
If Saban would speak publicly on the issue (which he won't), I think we'd learn that the titles are actually accurate regarding who he considers his true coordinator. It's Smart.Take away the fancy titles and the reality was that Steele was DC/LB coach with Smart being ADC/secondary coach .
Williams coaches TE's & ST's .
I don't think you're off base at all.I've never had any concrete reasons for believing so, but I've always felt like Coach Smart was CNS's proverbial "pet." He seems to be the main assistant he mentions specifically by name, and they seem to have many of the same characteristics (i.e. smaller guys who possibly overachieved in their own playing days; both are tough/hardworking).
In fact, I'd go so far as to say that given CNS's statements a couple months ago about the advantages of having a "head coach in waiting," I believe that Coach Smart might be being groomed for this role. CNS doesn't want to lose Kirby to a rival SEC school, and he'd be seasoned and battle tested by the time CNS is ready to retire (ideally).
Again, I'd like to reiterate that I'm literally NO ONE of importance, and this is purely good old fashioned speculation based on what I've read/seen in the news.
Agreed - on both . I've heavily pimped Coach Smart and his involvement for some time now .If Saban would speak publicly on the issue (which he won't), I think we'd learn that the titles are actually accurate regarding who he considers his true coordinator. It's Smart.
The next guy to fill Steele's job will, IMO, be just a LB coach.
Two problems with Kines as a LB coach under Saban: First and foremost -- and I say this as a big Joe Kines fan -- he is a terrible recruiter.Agreed - on both . I've heavily pimped Coach Smart and his involvement for some time now .
I was thinking the other day how badly I wish Coach Kines still worked for us . I'd like to see him win a ring before what remains of his time is up . He wouldn't be the recruiter Steele was but , it's hard to find a better LB coach . Especially one who could've simply swapped offices .
